Twitter (2020) VS the Hays code (1930)
Maybe the Hayes code wasn’t that bad
Imagine knowing this little about history. The Hays code we’re so apparently keen to bring back included the following:
- “Miscegenation” (interracial relationships) were not allowed.
- Sex hygiene and venereal diseases were not appropriate subjects.
- Homosexuality was not to be depicted.
- Ridicule of the clergy was not allowed.
- Religion could never be depicted in a mocking manner.
- Words like “God,” “Lord,” “Jesus,” “Christ,” “hell,” and “damn” could not be used unless it was in connection with religious ceremonies.
But yeah let’s fucking bring back the Hays code because sex is evil. You fucking lemmings. The point is that the Hays code was a horrible, immoral piece of bullshit that was only there to enforce white supremacy and Christianity on screen, and the reason people compare you to them is because of this absolutely brain-numbing tomfoolery.
Good lord, we’ve really reached “maybe the Hayes code was good” levels of purity culture. Yikes.
Because of the Hayes Code, women were no longer portrayed as independent beings. Instead they were reduced to mere appendages to men.
It’s driving me nuts because I can’t find the quote, but one of the rationales for the Code I read in a film history book was (paraphrased) “If it’s not fit for a child to watch, then it’s not fit for anyone.” And gosh, doesn’t THAT sound familiar…
Homosexuality actually could be depicted under the Hayes Code! By irredeemable villains!! Or people who died because of it!!!
If you’ve ever wondered why media has so much sh*tty stereotypes about homosexuality and villainy, or the bury your gays trope exists, well look no further than the Hayes Code and its wide reaching impact on generations of media makers! Our current rating system? Was actually an improvement on the Hayes Code.
Feel free to miss me with that bullsh*t, thanks.
I just can’t with the “don’t make fun of us for defending the Hays Code! How are we supposed to know what that even is?”
You. Look. It. Up. You look it up. YOU LOOK IT UP. You do what you should be doing every single time you see something you don’t understand. You fuckin look it up. You have libraries of information in your pocket. Look it up. You do not have an excuse for not opening another tab, typing in the thing, and hitting enter. Look it up.
And if you’re LGBTQIA, Bipoc, non-xtian, or a woman in the US, and you spend any time looking up your history, you will see the Hays Code. It’s not just a silly old rule that we can laugh at now. It’s the framework we’re trying to dismantle. You need to know this. You should’ve been taught by your parents and teachers, but if you weren’t, you have to pick up the slack and do the research yourself. That sucks and I’m sorry, but it’s an unavoidable part of life.
See, this is that critical thinking stuff that purity culture is so obsessed with. You cannot interpret a thing (like “sex scenes are only for horny lol” being juxtaposed with the Hays Code) if you don’t know
- the meaning of the language (the definitions of “sex,” “story,” “passion,” etc), the topics referenced (the Hays Code, what sex scenes are),
- the speakers (Lily Orchard is notoriously aggressive, bigoted, and authoritarian… the Hays Code was written by a priest, a trade paper editor, and some studio heads),
- or the context (the first statement is part of a ridiculous list of “writing tips” that also includes such gems as [paraphrased] wlw only kissing at the end is abuse, high-stakes conflict is bad, and the good guy must kill the villain, and was written in 2020… while the Hays Code was written in 1930 as a way to self-censor bc they thought the govt might step in if anyone saw their media as “lowering the moral standards” of ppl with “succeptible minds,” aka women, children, the disabled, and poor ppl who needed to be spoon-fed images of the “correct standards of life”).
You really do need that info. You do. You need to go get it. Then you look at it. And you combine it with all of the other applicable info you have. (For example, if you have had sex, or consumed any media containing sex.) Then you think through the thing, while taking everything you know into account. You identify what it was supposed to mean, and decide what it means to you. Congratulations! You have done the critical thinking.
At least if you still agree that sex’s only purpose in literature is to give you a boner, and that it’s a good idea to put down sweeping policies to prevent that from happening, you’ll have some kind of thought process behind it. And you can start trying to reconcile that view with its historical and present effects on minorities and society as a whole.
And if you don’t know what those effects are, FUCKIN LOOK IT UP
Devon Sawa never really did it for me at the height of his Final Destination Tween Heartthrob days, but I am just binging "Somewhere Between" from 2017 and can I just say a face I would sit on? 🥵

Ellie & Xander // City of Kings and Queens [Original Story]
God, how Ellie had hated those girls. Vapid, spoiled, boy crazy bitches whose sole concern in life was “But does he like me?” But here she was, hurrying towards the park in the dead of night with the skirts of her expensive gown dramatically billowing behing her like glistening clouds. Running away from the boy she wanted too much and the one she should have wanted more…

Meryton Preparations
└────── ⋆. · ❅ · .⋆ ──────┘
The excitement seemed to hum through the air at Longbourn in preparation for the upcoming assembly at Meryton. Lydia and Kitty ran through the house in a sing-song about the evening’s impending dancing and frivolity that awaited them. Mary sat at the pianoforte plunking out a sour tune. Lizzy curled Jane’s lovely locks and Beatrice sat in a room by herself, drawing the landscape from the view of her window seat, humming a tune to herself as she went sketched.
It was not that Beatrice Bennet disliked assemblies. In fact, she found them rather gay; but like her sister Jane, Beatrice was painfully shy about the opposite sex. Except, Beatrice was far worse. If a man so much as looked her direction, her cheeks would flush and words fled her mind. She wished she was half as witty as Lizzy when it came to such matters or that her beauty and grace might make up for her lack of words, like Jane. Instead, she was simply forced to muddle her way through, much to the dismay of her mother. Beatrice feared she was forever going to be a burden to her father.
Beatrice knew she should be readying herself for the assembly, but there would be no one there she wanted to impress. Almost all the gentlemen that would be in attendance already had their eyes set on a woman. Well, all but the two unmarried gentlemen newly arrived in the area. Mama hoped that Jane would catch the eye of one of the gentlemen. But Beatrice had heard through the grapevine that the other man was rather dour.
Introduction // City of Kings and Queens // Original Story [Updated Cast]
“Everyone expects me to mourn him, like he wasn’t a total stranger to me”, she spat with a bitter laugh that almost sounded like a sob. “All they want is a perfect little act - the lost daughter shedding tears at his grave while the whole world is watching. But the truth is that I am almost eighteen yeas old and all my father has given me is his eyes and a whole range of daddy issues…”

Hello, my name is Sara and I wanna treat this as the formal introduction to my current WIP “City of Kings and Queens”. If the whole edit looks familiar to you, you’re absolutely right. This is a repost of an older set with an updated cast of FCs, as I felt they looked closer to how I imagined Ravi, Ellie and Xander. (Plus, an FC with actual Blackfoot ancestry for the Crown Prince of this universe’s United States? Hell, yeah!) If you wanna know anything about this story, my askbox and DMs are always openn and I love, love, love to talk about my royal babies <333

Ravi & Ellie & Xander // City of Kings and Queens [WIP]
“Ravi feels like home”, Ellie said and didn’t even notice the soft smile tugging at the corner of her lips. “I feel save with him. Like I really do belong here.”
“And what about Xander?” Della sensed the big, ugly ‘but’ hanging in the air between them. “What does he feel like?”
Ellie lowered her gaze when the familiar feeling of guilt washed over her. Below them the traffic flowed languidly and in such perfect silence that she could’ve sworn she heard her own heart beating frantically in her chest.
When she finally spoke up, her answer was barely more than a whisper on the wind.
“He feels like falling…”

PAIRING: TYLER RAKE AND ESME DRUMMOND (ESTABLISHED OFC)
WARNINGS: angst. Big time angst.
SUMMARY: Dhaka nearly ended everything before it even began. In it’s aftermath and with Tyler’s life teetering on the threshold between life and death, Esme is about to realize just how strong she can be. And that love happens when it happens. There’s no rules. No rhyme or reason. No timeline.

Author’s note: This is a little three-part companion piece to the Tyler and Esme series. However, it follows the timeline of Extraction 2 and contains canon events from the movie. So there are slight spoilers ahead! You’ve been warned :) You do not need to have read any of the other fics to understand this one.
This has been a ‘thing’ in progress for a while now. Something wanted to write about Tyler’s time in the hospital and Esme’s decision to give up her life as she knew it to stick around and support him through it. I think @tragiclyhip had probably heard about my plans for this about a dozen times in the past two years alone LOL. But the hospital scenes in E2 encouraged me to finally get off my butt and write it.
A huge thanks to @tragiclyhip for the incredible story cover and to @youflickedtooharddamnit for coming up with the perfect title! Love you guys :D

She’s used to it now. The steady hums and beeps of the machines that keep him alive.
Every new day is like the one before it. Four months of repeating the same actions from morning until night. And despite the sterile confines of the Intensive Care Unit, she’s managed to settle into a familiar and somewhat comfortable routine; on a first-name basis with many of the nurses and support staff, and the ‘on-ward’ coffee shop baristas able to recite her usual order from sheer memory. Extra large tea. Three milk. No sugar. A toasted bagel with peanut butter for breakfast. A fruit and yogurt parfait for lunch. A bowl of soap or a salad for dinner.
Sometimes both.
Her brain is saturated with mundane and useless details; ridiculous little tidbits of information that help keep her sane and functioning. She knows it’s forty-seven paces to the private washroom, another hundred and ten to the kitchen and common area set up for patients’ family members. And that the vending machine by the communal laundry room is temperamental; every third quarter is only accepted if you first vigorously rub the edge of it along the metal slot.
It’s as far as she’s gone. She hasn’t dared to venture beyond the ward; filled with a sense of dread that the moment she steps foot outside of it, the worst will happen. As if the shadow of death is just lingering in the corner; licking its lips as it anxiously and patiently awaits her departure. Feeling as if she can somehow ward it off if she stays nearby; not giving that cold and unforgiven hand a chance to get close enough to grab hold of him. And she’s determined to fight the demon off as long as she possibly can.
Whether that’s weeks or months. Or even years.

Eleanor “Ellie” Ramirez - Duchess of The Pacific
“Everyone expects me to mourn him; pretend like he wasn’t a total stranger to me”, she spat with a bitter laugh that almost sounded like a sob. “All they want is a perfect act - the lost daughter shedding tears at his grave with the whole world watching. But the truth is that I feel nothing. I am almost eighteen years old and all this man has given me are his eyes and a whole range of daddy issues…”
Ellie’s life takes a drastic turn when the girl from the wrong side of the river learns that she’s the illegitimate daughter of a recently deceased Duke of the UKNA. Thrown into the glamorous world of King’s Island she soon learns that not all that glitters is gold…
Alexander “Xander” Johnson - Crown Prince of the UKNA
“Twenty years ago this country was on the brink of a street war that could have cost thousands of innocent lives. They needed something to show the tribes that they heard them. A big gesture. I was born eighteen months later - a Crown Prince with Blackfoot ancestry.” His smile was almost sad when he turned to her and Ellie thought that he looked younger somehow. Softer than she had seen him all evening. Innocent. “I have learned very early that in my line of work the heart has very little say…”
As future King of the UKNA a lot of responsibility rests on the young prince’s shoulders, but he never quite seems to grasp the true meaning of this until the girl who used to have nothing opens his eyes to both his priviledge and to the needs of his subjects.
Raveesh “Ravi” Dewan - (future) Viscomte of New York
“Did you know I was born just three days after Xander?”, he chuckled, but there was no humour in his eyes. “Second to the future King from the very first breath I took. Funny enough, I never cared. Maybe that’s why we became friends. Because I didn’t mind standing in his shadow and because this way he never had to watch his back around me. But now…”. he sighed and looked over to where Ellie was chatting and laughing with Della and a few other girls from school. “This might be the first time I actually wish I’d been there first…”
Being raised in a world of politics and power games has not always been easy for soft, sensitive Ravi, even without being out and open about being bi. But things get even more complicated when he meets Ellie and suddenly finds himself torn between his role as the people pleasing right hand man and the desire to go after what he wants for once in his life…

Pairing: Bucky Barnes/OFC
Rating: M (Mature) & E (Explicit)
Bucky stepped off the plane he and Quill had just flown into JFK on and loosened his uniform necktie as he shouldered his backpack and headed down the concourse towards his and Maggie’s bar.
That was where he told her he’d find her for her surprise trip. Bucky didn’t tell Maggie where they were going, just that they had a date somewhere that required her passport.
He had another surprise for her as well. She likely thought he would be flying her — and the other passengers — over the ocean, but not this time. They had about twelve hours at their destination. It would be a quick date considering it was a hell of a commute to get there, but Maggie did challenge him to bring his A game for Valentine’s Day and he wasn’t about to start disappointing her now.
