Thoughts on Marvel's What If? comics?

Like, on them in general? I like them a lot in concept. Why have a multiverse if you can’t have a bunch of weird little short spin-off comics examining what would happen if you nudged one thing to the side. I think in execution they have a fair amount of misses and only so many hits, but you have to cram your canon divergent story into one issue, so it’s a tough job. I have kind of a preference for the grimmer ones -- I like alternate universes that can explore roads the main canon story can’t go down for whatever reason. Character deaths, villain AUs, etc. It’s fun!

A couple favorites, though these are all Spider-Man and Fantastic Four focused because I am who I am:

What If? (1977) #1: Spider-Man Joined the Fantastic Four: Really starting off the whole series in way particularly targeted to me. Does what it says on the tin, imagining an alternate take of ASM #1 where when Peter tries to join the Fantastic Four they don’t laugh him out of the building. I think this is really rocky in general -- I don’t like the idea that Peter joining would drive Sue straight into Namor’s arms. But it’s on the list for Fantastic Five content anyway.

What If? (1977) #24: Spider-Man Had Rescued Gwen Stacy: What it says on the label. Follows through on the pretty heavy current in ASM before Gwen’s death that Peter and Gwen were planning on getting married, with good Flash and Harry character moments too.

What If? #42: The Invisible Girl Had Died: Who wants to cry? Assumes a version of canon where Sue died in labor with Franklin. Johnny, Ben, and Reed mourn.

What If? (1989) #18: The Fantastic Four Battled Doctor Doom Before They Got Their Powers: Cute little canon divergent story where the Fantastic Four’s first confrontation with Doom happens before they get their powers, when Reed is still living at Sue and Johnny’s aunt’s boarding house. It does use Byrne’s version of the origin story, so unfortunately Sue is depicted as much younger than Reed and Ben.

What If? (1989) #35: The Fantastic Five Fought Doctor Doom and Annihilus: Another Fantastic Five issue! And not the one where Reed like, blows up Atlantis. That one’s weird. This one is another take on Franklin’s birth, in a version of canon where Peter is a member of the team. It’s cute.

What If? (1989) #89: Deadly Inheritance: An alternate take on the Fantastic Four’s origin where the FF are captured after the rocket crash by a mysterious and sinister organization.

What If? #105: Who Is She?: The first appearance of May “Spider-Girl” Parker! The issue that would spin off into the MC2 continuity. Assumes a canon that diverges from 616 after the birth of Peter and Mary Jane’s daughter, in a universe where the baby lived and was recovered.

What If? Spider-Man vs Wolverine: I think this one’s just kind of fun. A What If? of Spider-Man vs Wolverine where they team up to rescue Charlemagne’s sister and end up a little assassin family.

What If? No More Powers: I have to confess, I think this one’s sort of painfully average as far as What Ifs go, but there’s a moment in it I’m absolutely obsessed with as a piece of commentary on Peter Parker, where, rendered powerless, he flat out says it’s not about the powers.

What If? Back in Black: A Spider-Man What If? focused on the end of Civil War where Mary Jane is shot and killed instead of May and Peter goes on the hunt for the Kingpin.

What If? Grim Hunt: A take on Grim Hunt where Peter rejects Julia Carpenter’s prophecy and kills Kraven, breaking the web and sending him down a murderous path. It’s fun! It’s got great art. I think the ending is kind of a let down but otherwise I highly recommend it.

What If? Peter Parker Became the Punisher: An alternate origin story that does what it says on the tin. Good modern PeterGwen content.

Diff version under the cut….

the only valid m/f pairing dynamics are:

  • stupid as all fuck but has good intentions (for him) & pegs him (for her)
  • Area Man In Awe of his Amazing Wife (note: the characters need not necessarily actually be married to fit this trope)
  • but sir, that’s my emotional support fictional mom & dad
  • “everyone, meet my monster/alien/robot boyfriend”

none of these are mutually exclusive

That’s it, Black fiction is cancelled. Errybody go home!

Buy her books!!!

She won that season too!  She’s so cool and upbeat

Despite being cool.and upbeat (and she is) she also suffers from anxiety and recently started speaking about it in social media. Instagram posta detailing her inability to even go downstairs and how support her fam are etc. She also recently did a bbc documentary about anxiety disorders.

Nadiya is also a perfect example of why diversity in media is important. A government report on community cohesion said she’s done “more for British-Muslim relations than 10 years of government policy”, because her presence on TV has helped to humanize the image of the hijab-wearing Muslim woman in the eyes of the public. She’s not even really a political activist or anything - she’s just a nice, honest, down-to-earth person. Sometimes that’s all it really takes to convince people.

Do you have any suggestions for a lone-wolf private investigator who is an older guy, like mid 40s, and has kind of graying hair? Its like a real specific character but I love your blog so I had to ask! Thank you!

First of all, thank you so much :) I hope i can help you to find the right face! I can imagine Sullivan Stapelton for such an character. He is an Australian actor, born in 1977, but i think there no pictures of him with graying hair, so not perfect, but i could work as a lone-wolf private investigator.

Another option could be Michael Shanks, a Canadian actor who was born in 1970. He played Charlie on Saving Hope or Carter on Smallville.

Or Ben Affleck, an American actor, who was born in 1972. He played Nick on Gone Girl or Tony on Argo.

And also Benno Führmann, a German actor, born in 1979. He played Karsten on Sperling or Pavlou on Survivor.

the next chapter is hereeeeeeee ~

Ben McDaniel’s parents believe two things. They believe that their 30-year-old son dived into an underwater cave in Vortex Springs, Florida, on the evening of the 18th of August, 2010. They also believe that he is dead.

What happened in the time between those two events has completely transformed their lives…

Tiana Notice was only 25 years old when she was brutally murdered by her ex-boyfriend James Carter II on February 14th, 2009. Prior to her death, Tiana lived in Plainville, Connecticut and she met James on a dating site. Around six months into their relationship, James was sentenced to five months in jail for the domestic abuse of a previous girlfriend. It was at this time that Tiana realized that James actually had a long history of many violent crimes including assault. Additionally, Tiana suspected that James was cheating on her. She eventually decided to end her relationship with him, but unfortunately he was not ready to let her go.

James continued to to harass Tiana after their breakup. She would frequently spot him sitting in his car outside of her apartment building and following her while she took shopping trips. When Tiana finally confronted James about it, he grew so irate that he actually took a restraining order against her. He reportedly told police that Tiana had assaulted him. Tiana denied these allegations, and even though James is the one who took the restraining order out on her, he continued to harass her via e-mail. James sent her threatening e-mails, saying things such as “As God is my witness, punishment is on the way, so be prepared,” and “You will have bad luck, you hear me? Remember this email when karma bites you in the ass.”

Tiana went to police after receiving these e-mails to report James for violating the restraining order. The police did not take her seriously, and she was told that the e-mails that James sent were non-threatening. James continued to harass Tiana via phone and e-mail, and she repeatedly went to the police for help. According to Tiana’s mother, she went to the police 33 times in a 6-week period, but no action against James was ever taken. Things continued to escalate from there. One day upon leaving her apartment, Tiana discovered that her car had been vandalized. Once again, police told her that they were not going to take any action against James because they had no proof that he was the one who did it.

From there, Tiana and her family decided to take matters into their own hands. Her father helped her set up a surveillance camera at her apartment building’s parking lot. When Tiana returned home from work the next evening, she found a handwritten note at her apartment door that stated “Tiana forgive me. I never cheated on you. If I’m lying may God take my life. Forgive me for everything else I have done.” Unfortunately, the video tape inside the surveillance camera had run out at this point and they did not capture anybody entering the building to tape the note to the door. Still, the police finally decided to take action at this point and they attempted to contact James to have him provide a handwriting sample that they could compare to the note.

James grew enraged once he realized that Tiana had called the police on him. On February 14th, 2009, James lurked around Tiana’s apartment complex waiting for her to come home. Once she arrived, James ambushed Tiana and stabbed her 20 times before fleeing the scene. She was still somehow able to make a phone call to 911. Tiana told dispatchers, “I’m bleeding to death. My ex-boyfriend just stabbed me to death.” She lost consciousness shortly thereafter and was rushed to the hospital once paramedics showed up. Just a few hours later, she passed away.

It did not take long for investigators to identify James as a suspect. He was arrested and charged with Tiana’s murder shortly thereafter. He was eventually sentenced to 60 years in prison and he remains behind bars today.

Martin Allen was a 15-year-old boy living in Kensington, London. He had grown up in a council flat before his father was employed as a chauffeur to the Australian High Commissioner. This new career meant that the young family could move to a cottage in the grounds of the Australian High Commission in the prosperous Kensington area.

It was the 5th of November, 1979, and Martin was travelling home from Central Foundation Grammar School on the London Underground. The last time anybody saw Martin was at King’s Cross station at around 3:50PM when he said goodbye to one of his school friends. Afterwards, he walked into the short tunnelled passageway that leads to the west-bound Piccadilly Line train that would take him towards his home. Some reports would later say Martin’s brother saw him at home at around 5PM before he headed straight back out. What’s known, however, is that Martin disappeared at some point on that date.

Within days of his disappearance, the police launched a major enquiry. A witness came forward to say that they had seen a suspicious man accompanying a boy that looked like Martin at the Gloucester Road underground station at around 4:15PM. The witness said that the man had his arm around the teenage boy who appeared to be distressed. Afterwards, he saw the two board a West-bound train at the tube station despite the fact this station was the one closest to Martin’s home. He described the strange man as around 6 feet tall, in his 30s, well built and wearing a denim jacket. The witness heard the man tell the boy: “Don’t try to run.” Following the witness coming forward, an investigation found five other witnesses who saw the blonde man and boy. Despite an exhaustive search, the man was never identified.

Early on in the investigation, Martin’s brother alleged that the detective told his family that there were “high-up people involved” in his disappearance and that they should stop looking for Martin and “not take it further because someone will get hurt.” Over the years, theories have abounded. In 1998, police found a shrine to Martin in the house of an alleged pedophile who had a headstone engraved “In Memory of Martin Allen.” No evidence could tie him to the disappearance, however. At one point, police questioned serial killer Dennis Nilsen but again, no evidence could link him to the disappearance. There was even some speculation that Martin was abducted and murdered by a local pedophile ring, operating out of a local hotel.

To this date, the whereabouts of Martin Allen remains a mystery. Both his parents have passed away without knowing what happened to their son.
