you don't understand, your brain getting bigger is a reward for all of us actually

We can even tell a lot about wiz society based on the words they use for classifying people. Pure-blood, half-blood, and muggle-born. One of these things is not like the other. There is however, a word that does fit in with the other two: mud-blood. (And I would speculate that the term 'mudblood' came about as a nastier version the word 'mugblood', seeing as its only one letter off, but to the best of my knowledge that term is never used in any canon materials.)

Which tells me a few things, it implies that before recently (whenever that was) mudblood (or mugblood) was the commonly accepted term for wizards with muggle parents, and the adoption of the term 'muggle born', likely came about in response to muggle-borns protesting the use of the term mudblood.

Now, 'mudblood' has mostly been phased out by polite society in exchange for 'muggle-born" (and you could posit there'd be a group of people insisting on holding to the older term, because 'no one minded back in my day, quite similalry to the dynamics we see today around real world slurs and their alternatives) but of course, they keep the other two terms (pure-blood and half-blood), because their society isn't actually interested in doing away with blood purity. Not to mention, even if they did change the names, it wouldn't really make much of a difference, bloody purity is a eugenics doctrine, and it doesn't just stop because you've changed the names to something that sounds less eugenicsy.

And I can't help but imagine that if you were a muggle-born wizard, and you heard people going on about "pure-bloods", and "half-bloods" and "mugble-borns", in the same sentence it wouldn't matter that they're not using the word mudblood, you'd hear it anyway.

The whole situation reeks of complacency. They've taken out the most offensive, obviously harmful aspect, but left the rest, ie the underlying system and values of blood supremacy, in tact.

And isn't that an absolute fabulous parallel for how the central conflict of the story was dealt with? Voldemort gets destroyed, but the systems of oppression that allowed him to rise in the first place, well they're not causing obvious immediate harm, so they can stay.

The idea of dragons in modern times is so fun because imagine a hot summer day on your vacay and go to use the hotel pool and staff is like "valued guests we regret to inform you that the pool area is out of service at the moment, we apologize for the inconvenience"

And people like "wtf why" looking out their hotel room window and there's this. This dragon just curled up in the pool chilling, literally, cooling itself down

Some of the staff are trying to gently shoo him away and the dragon does a soft little "rrrrrr" like a grumpy cat and a warning puff of smoke and they're like "fuck it i don't get paid nearly enough for this" and no ones using the pool today sorry!

I love your art so much! for requests/ideas, I was wondering if you had any professor lupin shenanigans/hc’s?

Avatar

thank you!!! here are some professor lupin hc's of mine:

. Remus and Poppy Pomfrey reconnecting since she took care of him after the full moons back when he was a student there

. after taking the Marauders map from Harry he visits old hiding spots and places with the map and being all sad and stuff from all the memories

. trans remus without hrt bc of health reasons forgets to paint on his moustache one day and when the students notice it in class one of them asked if he shaved and Remus is like “... yes I shaved absolutely” (and is secretly really happy that’s he’s passing) (i posted this in another post but wanted to include it here!)

. The teachers having after work hangouts, playing board cames or card and whatnot
