XD that's basically it, yes! having a "spill" (like getting hurt and stuff) and then getting those chills (from blood loss or shock or fever or whatever) ... love them both!

When a character's been hurt, but they've "rested enough" and they've got stuff to do and they're like *groans* "see? I'm fine." as they try to stand up, all sweaty and grimacing, and the rest of the team exchanges looks cause the character is obviously not fine but it's also useless to try and tell them that... that's good stuff.

How whumpy are the Alienist books?
No idea when this came in, cause tumblr is a functional site, but I actually haven't read the books (despite best intentions lol). As far as I know the show is whumpier than the books, esp the first session, like it really lays it on thick, but that things still happen in the books. I have also heard that, generally, the books are better than the show in multiple areas. So. I'd definitely check them out if you're interested in The Alienist, but maybe don't get hopes too high if you're only looking for whump.

When a character doesn’t realize they’ve been, like, shot or whatever and they hand brushes against their side and comes away wet with blood, and they’re just staring at it like wtf is this and then their knees just totally give out on them and they sink down, maybe gasping a little as the reality finally hits them. That’s good stuff.
I see that, and raise you a character who knows they’ve been shot, but waits until the rest of their crew is out of sight to put their hand against the slowly spreading stain of blood on their shirt, then trying to steady their breathing so they can follow without letting on how injured they are.
Okay but like the character who doesn’t realize they’ve been hurt trying to see if everyone else is okay only to slowly realize that everyone is looking at them with mounting horror. Then they touch their side to find it’s wet and oh no
