my favorite thing about nimona is that they didn't give her a backstory to why she was a shapeshifter. just that she was. it was her normal reality that she had lived for over a thousand years. that despite doing nothing wrong she was labeled as a monster from the beginning of time. the entire kingdom was only built to protect the world from her just wanting to exist free to be whatever she wanted.
this movie isn't even a trans allegory at this point, it is The transgender movie.
I enjoy all the headcanons of Ballister and Ambrosius becoming Nimona's dad's, because it ignores that she's actually at least a thousand years old. Just two gay men trying to father an eldritch being that's literally older than the hills
I adore how Nimona and The Sea Beast explored different aspects of fighting against bigotry and hatred through the power of the deranged child and noble himbo dynamic In Nimona we got to see an overall benevolent society that sabotages itself through it's ignorance and the extreme irrational hatred that stems from this .It's about the everyday bigotry that fill our society. This is most obviously seen in the Director. She doesn't want power, she is just so terrified of the "others" threatening her way of life that she is willing to do anything including destroying her own society. Ballister is an incredible asset to the Kingdom but he is not part of her traditional views and this he represents a threat that she mus destroy at all costs. It's the same mentality we see with crazy bigots who's favorite logic " if we allow this(aka minority) then what's next(ridiclous scenario)" This is further escalated at the end where she is literally willing to destroy half the kingdom if it means killing Nimona. In the Sea Beast we have a slightly different perspective. The "other" is not some unknown quantity. Here they are in a constant war with the "others". Both of the main characters have suffered immense loss as the "others" killed their family . And we have the main characters uncovering that this cycle of violence wasn't started by the others but from them. It was their rulers who started the war, who spread false propaganda and incited hatred just to increase their own power. Something extremely common especially lately in our world as we get a ton of politicians inciting hatred and presenting others as a threat. It's all about the systematic spread of fear and ahtred by those in power And that's where the brilliance of both movies iconic lines comes . "I see you Nimona" because both Ballister and the people of the Kingdom for the first time truly see Nimona for who she is and accept her. While in The Sea Beast it's “You can be a hero and still be wrong.” because people realize that you can be in he wrong even if you thought you were doing the right thing and that the real enemy are not the other but greedy Imperialistic political scum who is spreading fear and hatred so they can expand their own power I love these movies so much
two of the best movies I've watched this year
in my mind ambrosius and bal didn't get back together right away. they had this very awkward phase where I just know ambrosius fought TOOTH AND NAIL to get bal back, begging to get another chance in the most pathetic manner through drunken texts and lousy serenades, I know he got ghosted thirty different times, I know he cried about it to the entire Order, I know bal made hundreds of arm jokes to make him feel bad, I know the whole city was keeping up with the tea, I know the Spirit of Nimona herself was feeling the vibrations of the gay drama through the cosmos
i need people to know that it isn't classism in nimona. it's more like casteism. caste is different from class because it's more rigid, like it is forbidden to do anything of a specific caste your not from. it's also hereditary, only people who were born to this family are worthy of being a knight. it sounds a lot like caste. and it may be a coincidence, but ballister being the one to not want to follow it and brekaing it slightly, with how his voice actor and himself are sort of desi. like, at least in india, the casteism is there. it is there, it still exists.
With the high rate of suicide for trans teens... and then the climax of Nimona is a genderfluid teenager deciding that because of all the rejection and abuse she's faced, she's going to kill herself on the swordpoint of someone who used to be her friend until society made that friend hate her... only for the parental figure she's been bonding with to put his hand on her heart and say "I'm sorry. I see you. You're not alone." And then when the danger is still there, Nimona turns herself into a phoenix, because a phoenix doesn't die, and she. Doesn't. Die.
ballistar being shocked people perceive him as a monster despite being seen as an outcast meanwhile nimona is like yeah we knew get with it bud like. the trans kid understanding better than the gay adult that it doesn't matter how much you conform, you'll still be seen as other even when you get as close as possible to the standard
Wow, Nimona did really did say that the threat is just a dream you made up and the monster is a girl who did nothing and teaching your children to hate just means the next generation will grow up blaming someone else for the fires they start with their own torches and there’s nothing outside the walls but a better world and don’t you just want to fucking break something sometimes and- and- and-
Nimona sure is a movie
oh another little detail about Nimona that fucked me up:
I thought Bal refusing to call Nimona a monster, instead saying “You know what you are”, was him struggling with caring about her but also fearing her. After further thought, no.
It’s respectability politics.
He’s a cis, presumably gay man, who lived his whole life in the same confines as Ambrosius. The same rules, the same “don’t be Weird, don’t be Defiant, Kill Monsters On Sight”. Just because he was expelled for being accused of being the wrong kind of gay murder doesn’t mean he isn’t still chockful of “I need to be accepted by the people in power.”
Which always, always results in trying to be more straight than straight people, more cis than the cis. It’s part of why the ‘queer is a slur’ bullshit spread so far. “Monster” replaces “queer” in that scene. Bal can’t bring himself to call his friend a word that he has since learned is painful and was used to hurt her, but he still means it. He won’t let it out of his mouth, but he still means it, with the same spitting hate as everyone else.
Monster. Queer. Faggot. Dyke. Tranny.
Bal still hated That One Part Of Her. He loved Nimona, his friend and ally, but she was Monster, and just like all the “LGB without the T” fuckheads, he was scared Nimona’s transness would drag him down even further. He still wanted to assimilate, be accepted.
It’s impossible to do that. We are not different. Cis people are not “more acceptable” than trans. Gays and lesbians are not “more acceptable” than bi, pan, and ace people. We’re all monsters to the people who hate us. Stop polishing their boots with your tongue and fight.
nimona is abt living in a surveillance police state where the only path to acceptance is conformity as a tool of oppressing those like you. it’s about how a privileged white woman afraid of imagined dangers can often be the greatest threat of all. it’s about how our nature is acceptance, but even a single moment of misinformed paranoia can give rise to lasting cycles of bias and abuse. it’s about how systems of belief will always find a way to validate the harm they inflict upon others, even if it means turning one child into a myth and the other to a monster. nimona is also. a film about a dancing pink shark in sunglasses
"I burn for you"
"you are the bane of my existence, and the object of all my desires"
"my heart calls for you"
Men take notes.
seeing Frankie wake up just in front of the tunnel leading to Stagtown after the giant eye incident and understanding that the whole series up to this was based on an unreliable narrator is both genius and the epitomy of the shit here we go again meme, but applied to horror in this essay I will
