sometimes you need to give up committing to the bit when someone genuinely can’t tell if it’s a bit or not and is getting distressed about it :/ sorry
sometimes all u need to do is take one second to say "(yeah this is a bit)" if someone is genuinely asking because they genuinely can't tell, and then you can continue with the bit. i just feel like refusing to acknowledge someone saying "i cant tell if youre joking or not" and you just continue, or even say, "im not joking" then you're not being very funny, you're just being kind of mean, i think.
obviously there is nuance to this and if you know someone really well sometimes going in harder on the bit will make them get that it's a bit and that's fine if you know them. but just be mindful, yknow? not everyone can pick up on stuff like that, and pushing harder on a bit by saying "im serious" when someone asks if you're joking or not can be harmful in some situations.
Literally every conversation with a colleague/peer in the academic field I'm in (anthropology, with a focus on human prehistory and human evolution) upon them learning I'm an observant religious Jew goes like this:
Person: "Sorry if this is a personal question, but how do you.... y'know......deal with it?"
Me: "Deal with what?"
Person: "Y'know...... y'know......your religion......"
Me: "Meaning?"
Person: "Well, um, how old do you believe the earth is?"
Me: "I follow the geological consensus, which is approximately 4.5 Billion years"
Person: "But......but.....your Bible says that it's 6,000 years old....."
Me: "Technically 5,783 years, so you're wrong there, haha"
Person: "Okay but how do you....how do you reconcile that with science?"
Me: "I don't need to reconcile it. They're not in opposition."
Person: "??"
Me: "The plain text in the Tanakh states that it has been 5,783 years since the creation of Adam, and consequently the world. Judaism has never been about taking the text in the Tanakh plainly, there's always deeper meanings. Who's to say that the 5,783 years aren't just the years since a couple named Adam and Eve met and copulated, triggering the begining of the lineage of Abraham, Moses, and the entire Jewish lineage, and that the six days of creation aren't six phases which are actually pretty in-line with our understanding of evolution?"
Person: "But.....some people believe that it's literally been 5,783 years since the earth was literally created!"
Me: "Okay..... that's what they believe. I don't see how it should bother me, especially considering we're in the field of anthropology where we try to study other patterns of belief, not cast judgement upon them."
Person: "But other Jews believe that!!!"
Me: "Again.....why should that affect my religious and academic senses of self? Judaism has never been a monolith of belief, anyway."
Person: "But-"
Jewish Paleontologist who has this exact Discussion with Others and I Feel You
We were taught in Sunday school that the 6 days weren’t days as we see them because god has a different perception of time.
As for Abraham and Sarah being old as balls, we were told that people measured years differently back then. This seems more dubious as an adult, but given how many “birthdays” we celebrate (trees, animals, etc.), I can see the math mathing in a symbolic way.
When evolution was first posited in the western world and Jewish people reacted to it, the primary method of doing so was to fit Jewish ideas into evolution, and not to discredit it
in fact, many rabbis saw evolution as proof of gd's power through creation, not disproof
and the four worlds that were created and destroyed prior to ours in Kabbalah were assigned to the Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic!
Yeah, hell, even just for the concept of human evolution, there are Kabbalistic and spiritual ideas about the Adam that preceded Adam, either the animalistic Adam (via Rav Soloveitchik) or the Spiritually Previous Adam (via Chassidut), which both acknowledge the existence of people in some capacity before the dawn of Adam HaRishon. I mean even the Tanakh itself describes humans existing outside of Adam and Eve's family structure who copulated with the Bnei Elohim, so if they didn't come from Adam and Eve they had to have come from *somewhere*.
Also, I'm actually not sure that Tanakh go ed a date for the Adam and Eve story. At some point, people created a calendar system, and backdated it to what felt like "a long time ago" for the point they felt year 0 should be.
Further: Personally I don't believe I have to fit everything in Tanakh to the scientific consensus. The Tanakh is not a scientific journal and it's function is not to give an as-accurate-as-possible-accounting of the earth's history. The Tanakh is myth and legend. Every culture has them; these are mine, and that's why they're sacred to me. These are the stories my ancestors told, and that's why they have relevance to me.
I just saw a post implying that Tumblr is doing scab work by promoting OnePiece during the strike because ~Tumblr accepted money to make this promotion and that's against SAG-AFTRA rules~
the strike prohibits union writers and actors--and writers and actors who may someday like to join the union--from engaging in and promoting their work in movies, television, and streaming (they can actually still do stage, commercials, and even soap operas, because those are different unions)
Tumblr is not part of or planning to be part of the writer or actor unions
what Tumblr is doing is just regular advertising
if regular advertising were against the strike, then there would not have been any promotion at all allowed for any movie over the last two months
I mean, yes, I completely understand being irritated with how this One Piece promotion is going
but Tumblr isn't breaking the rules of a union, which it's not now and never will be part of, by running annoying ads
Just saw a different post where that same person added that same take again, and this time I saw that the notes were full of people very firmly correcting them
but then I saw someone saying, more or less, "Yeah, they're not crossing the picket line, but they are violating the fact that you must disclose when you're doing paid advertising!"
and, once again, that's not how that works, either--the rules about stating when you're doing a promotion for which you were compensated applies to individuals, especially in social media posts that may otherwise give the appearance of someone just casually chatting with their besties about something new they tried
Tumblr is basically a corporate media entity running commercials and billboards
which by their very nature are known to have been paid for
You don't watch the SuperBowl then report the NFL to the FTC for not having a disclaimer on every commercial and stadium-side sign about being a paid promotion.
Like, yes, I absolutely get being irritated by this particular advertising campaign. But that doesn't mean there's something morally reprehensible at the core of it. It's just annoying. You don't need any deeper reason to dislike it.
God damn people really do keep looking for "virtuous" reasons to dislike things
How about it's fucking annoying
