oh the misery, everybody wants to be my enemy ...
“Did you see the way that little girl looked at me? Kids. Little kids. They grow up believing that they can be a hero if they drive a sword into the heart of anything different. And I’m the monster? I don’t know what’s scarier. The fact that everyone in this kingdom wants to run a sword through my heart or that sometimes I just wanna let ‘em.” “We have to get you out of here. Over the wall. We won’t stop until we find some place safe, okay? We’ll go. Together. No matter what we do, we can’t change the way people see us.” “You changed the way you see me... Didn’t you?
NIMONA (2023), based on the comic by ND Stevenson, who came out as transgender in 2022
I just rewatched this fucking movie (Nimona <3) again with my mom. This time I noticed something I haven't seen people bring up too much: a lot of the movie is dedicated to showing pro-institute and anti-"monster" propaganda for kids, from the cereal ads to the toy ads. It's probably as blunt as the movie goes with its themes about bigotry being a learned propagandistic endeavor that is beaten into all individuals of a society. The glorification of "justified" state violence and surveillance and the villification of the different are consistently enforced in every facet of the world, and kids are a big part of that! We see that both with Gloreth and the little girl Nimona saves who raises the sword at her. Like the book, I think the movie manages to go really into depth on its themes in a very nuanced way that I haven't seen even most adult media tackle, even though the themes of the movie are almost completely different from the ones in the book.
"You're gonna be a Knight, Bal! They're gonna love you. Like I do." | NIMONA (2023)
So... I may or may not have watched Nimona recently...
going insane because nimona is a movie about how hate is taught to us. it's a movie about how humans' first instinct is to be loving and caring and hate is something that doesn't come naturally. it's a movie about the difference of being perceived and being seen. it's a movie about wanting to be seen and understood. it's a movie about how hate can be unlearnt and love can be relearnt. it's a movie about how love always comes back to us in the end even though we think we have lost it. it's a movie about a little girl who was demonized to a comically large extent because she was a little different. it's a movie about that little girl finding love and a family. it's also a movie about blowing up bigots and dancing sharks.
~ But what if they still hate me? ~ No one hates a hero of the realm.
