austyn - 22 -  set out to be a science blog but mostly just politics and garbage (but i know lots about wetlands and some about physics hmu)

If you would report an undocumented immigrant to ICE you would have reported me to the Nazis and I don’t fucking trust you

A note:

I live in a state where you “have to” report anyone you suspect of being undocumented (that wonderful hellhole of Arizona). Now in practice this law has fallen far short, thank goodness. But if you live in such a place and they start enforcing it, here is how you get around it:

Assume everyone who doesn’t speak English is visiting.

Never ask about their job, because if they tell you they work here then you know they’re not visiting. You see them a lot for several weeks or months? Hm. Someone in the family must be ill. That’s terribly tough. They always dress in old, ratty laborers’ clothes? I feel you, my dude, I can’t afford new clothes either, and my dad has the fashion sense of an aardvark, so sometimes it’s not even about “affording” them. They say they’ve been here for years? You must have misunderstood. Spanish isn’t your first language, after all. First and last name? It never came up, or you don’t recall–you meet a lot of people.

And then, if you’re asked: no, you haven’t seen anyone residing illegally in the United States. Just people visiting.

Very good very important addition

Essentially, this is the civil society version of a work-to-rule strike.

Don’t do more than is expressly asked of you, and do what you are asked with such an intense attention to protocol that not asking you at all becomes more effective than even bothering.

In this case:

“Have you seen an illegal immigrant?”

“Could you describe an illegal immigrant, officer?”

*officer describes a person who is in the country without appropriate paperwork, or who has crossed the border illegally*

“No, sir, I haven’t seen any illegal immigrant.”

And this is correct. You have NOT seen an illegal immigrant, because you have no way of knowing if Jose Fulano is here legally or not. And since you can’t see his paperwork (or lack thereof), and did not personally see him cross the border illegally, you are only answering precisely the question asked.

I’m not American, and I have like, three followers, but this is important.

a surprising amount of really important activism rests on your ability to lie convincingly to people in authority

For those who don’t know, Rayshard Brooks, 27 yr old father of, was shot and killed by an Atlanta police officer at a Wendy’s parking lot in Atlanta Friday night.

In the video, Mr. Brooks is seen calmly and politely speaking with Officers after falling asleep at a Wendys parking lot because he said he was “Too intoxicated to drive.” The officers could have done the right thing and stayed with him until someone picked him up, allowed him to walk to his home (which he offered to do) or even offered him a ride home, but instead they decided to escalate the situation and kill him.

THIS IS WHY WE’RE SCREAMING BLACK LIVES MATTER! If this was a white man these officers would have undoubtedly did ANY of this options, it happens ALL the time, but no, Rayshard Brooks was black and now his daughter has to grow without her father and we add another name to the list. RIP Rayshard

Vegans of tumblr, listen up. Harvesting agave in the quantities required so you dont have to eat honey is killing mexican long-nosed bats. They feed off the nectar and pollinate the plants. They need the agave. You want to help the environment? Go back to honey. Your liver and thyroid will thank you, as well. Agave is 90% fructose, which can cause a host of issues. Bye.

So let me get this straight ,vegans should stop eating the food of the Mexcian long-nosed bats, because the bats need it, and instead vegans should instead eat honey, the food of bees, that their larvae need, even though the bee populations are facing ecological issues as it stands.  10/10 post, dude.

Did you forget the whole part where only excess is taken and all their needs are met and then some orrrr?

Like, did you read it orrrrr?

Anyway, BUY HONEY SAVE BEES

It is a 10/10 post. Because OP is right.

Bees do not suffer when beekeepers take their honey, because experienced beekeepers do not take all of their honey, in fact, they leave plenty of honey left for the bees to consume over the winter. If we do not collect their honey, 1 of two things will happen.

1. they will leave for a bigger home. Which at first seems fine until you remember that bees are dying very quickly out in the wild.

or

2. They will start using the areas that they reserve for their young as a place to make more honey. This is bad because if no more young are being produced, then the hive will start to die out because no new workers are coming into the world, and the average live only 150 days, so it would also mean the loss of more bees.

So yeah, eating honey isn’t inhumane at all. In fact, you’re helping the bees by eating what they produce and giving money to the bee keepers who are the ones making sure that the hive will keep being healthy.

“bee populations are facing ecological issues” yes that’s true of native species, which, European Honey Bees, are not. :( u tried

Actually your wrong :( you tried.

My study species for my masters degree is honeybees (Apis mellifera) with my supervisor being one of the leading scientific experts into honeybees, so I think I have some actual knowledge on this instead of the typical tumblr misinformation.

Honeybees are important when it comes to agriculture processes and are actually facing ecological issues in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, the places they originated from. With their population in decline thanks to a range of issues such as:

  • use of pesticides
  • pests species such as varroa mites, tropilaelaps mite and tracheal mites
  • other invasive species
  • poor food and floral quality
  • diseases such as (depending where you are in the world like the US for example): CCD, AFB, EFB,  chalkbrood, sacbrood
  • Change in climate and weather

Honeybees are extremely important for growing crops, with 1/3′s (around 35%) of all crops in Australia replying on honeybee pollination, with 75% of our crops having a benefit from pollination by bees. However crops are pollinated by many different types of pollinating insects and animal species. So while the myth of “if honeybees die out we’ll have no crops!” isn’t true, the decline in honeybees will see crops producing lower quality and smaller yield, especially true for fruit and nuts, and will have a dramatic affect on the viability and diversity in the agricultural industry. But it likely won’t have massive effects on the production of stable food products such as flour, wheat, grains, cereal, ect. (as those are pollinated via wind).

So while the honeybee is great in terms of agriculture due to being a important generalist pollinator that are easy for humans to handle and work with, we also need to acknowledge that other pollinators such as native bees, flies, wasps and beetles are also important in addition to the honeybee.

In short! Honeybees are important and they are declining in certain parts of the world which is an issue for agricultural processes, but we can care about honeybees and also care about other native species of insects at the same time. It isn’t a one or none situation here.

Some more reading for those interested:

thank u for the new knowledge! I agree with you about not elevating one or the other, my frustration was with the person advocating against eating honey, not the other posts, I’m sorry it came across that way. And I’m sorry to have contributed to spreading misinformation. Good luck with your research and I hope to keep learning from you! Thank you again!

LGBT Zoology Pride!

As June is pride month I thought I’d post some animals that colourations match LGBT pride flags to celebrate evolution’s rainbow in my own nerdy science way.

Previous flags here: Lesbian | Gay |

Mwanza flat-headed Rock Agama (Agama mwanzae)

Endemic throughout Tanzania, Rwanda, and Kenya, the male’s bright colouration of pink, red and blue mean that these lizards are also commonly called the spider-man agama.

Thunderbolt Crayfish (Cherax pulcher)

The thunderbolt crayfish is a proprietary variant bred from two different species from the Cherax genus resulting in the bright blue, pink and purple colouration, which make them popular pets. Species in the Cherax genera are found typically in Australia and New Guinea.

Lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudatus)

Found throughout sub-Saharan Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula, these birds are considered the (unofficial) national bird of Kenya.

Flower Beetles (Smaragdesthes africana oertzeni)

Smaragdesthes africana are a common beetle species found throughout the  afrotropical region, more commonly known as flower beetles due to the range of various shades of iridescence throughout subspecies. The subspecies oertzeni is a strikingly purple, blue and pink colour.

Superb Leafwing (Fountainea nessus)

These striking butterflies occur in the eastern Andes (from Colombia to Bolivia) with the males forewings baring these bright pink-purple bands overlaid with a bright blue sheen. The underside of their wings are patterned brown in order for them to cryptically resemble their surrounding environment such as tree trunks and leaf litter.

hear me out

you’re stuck for a while doing some things and you get more health and stuff bc it helps you out in the long run but you aren’t making any steps forward you’re kind of just in a lil hole for a while and then u jump out with more health and better prepared for the rest of the game, but you’re as far from the big goals as u were when u started

I tried to watch the Ted Bundy Tapes because my friend was telling me how good it is, but I’m just so over how these stories are framed, its all the same.. it’s like this man is an evil genius! lets explore! but really its just some dude who hates women.. like congratulations it doesnt take a genius to exploit the way women are conditioned to be respectful to men no matter what the situation and then bash them in the head with a 2x4. just because some man butchers women in inventive ways before he gets caught by police does not make him a genius? And everyone is like he doesn’t seem the type! have you ever even spoken to a woman whose suffered violence at the hands of a man… he seems like exactly the type. it’s also shocking that the fact that he wasn’t caught right away is seen as proof of his genius and not the ineptitude of the criminal justice system. There could be a conversation about cultural forces and who get the privilege of the presumption of innocence… or who is allowed to be seen as an evil genius and not representative of their entire demographic.. but this isn’t conversation that is happening. is there anything more trite and boring than some man with a narcissism complex who hates women. when will we as a culture see this as a weakness and not some twisted genius.

For everyone’s information:

The plan for the 17th, when the adult content ban comes in, is to protest.

To do that, we are making as much noise either side of the 17th as possible, and using the site as normal.

On the 17th, dead silence.

People are saying log off but what they really mean is don’t open the site or the app.

But, on the 17th make as much noise as possible on every other platform. Tweet about it and post on facebook and instagram and everywhere else.

What this does is causes a massive dip in ad revenue for one single day. That does not make staff think ‘oh everyone’s gone let’s shut down.’ What it actually makes them think is ‘oh shit people aren’t happy and if people don’t keep using our site we’re out of money and out of jobs.’

A boycott reminds a company that the users (consumers) have the power to make their site (business) worthless with one single coordinated decision.

If you want to join in, here’s what to do:

Do:
  • Close all open instances of the app and site on all your devices before the 17th
  • Make posts before and after the 17th on tumblr and other platforms, talking about why this ban is bad
  • Make posts on other sites during the 17th. Flood the official tumblr staff twitter and facebook with your anger and your opinion
  • Come back on the 18th and check in
Don’t:
  • Delete the app from your phone (this doesn’t affect their revenue and since it’s off the store at the moment it’ll be hard to get back)
  • Delete your account. I mean you can if you want to, but if you keep your account and don’t use it you’re saying to staff that there’s still time to save it. If you delete it’s hard work to come back.
  • Open the app or website (including specific blogs)
  • Make any posts (turn down/off your queue and make sure nothing is scheduled)
  • Go quiet elsewhere. Make it clear that this is just about tumblr, not a mass move away from all social media.

Remember: the execs don’t care about anything but money. Shutting down the site means there’s $0 further income from it. That’s their last possible course of action. If we make it clear we’re not happy, they’ll have to do something or we can do more and more until it becomes too expensive.

Protests take commitment. They’re a defiant action against a business that is doing something wrong. They will try to scare you into not participating, because they’re scared. We hold all the power here, sometimes the execs just need to be reminded of that.

Peaceful protest pointed at ad revenue, spiking activity elsewhere. Genius.

at the very least, do this

Please *also* do this and the other things. It’s relatively easy as far as protests go

genuinely heard someone claim that fruit isn’t vegan because they require pollinators such as bees and now i need to lie down for the rest of my life

Okay so I saw a video claiming this too, I’m pretty sure this is a criticism of the vegan ideal of not using any product that uses animals “unnaturally” (honeyf, for one). and because pollinators are driven around, these fruits wouldn’t occur naturally, thus exploiting the bees. I think veganism is a good thing, but I don’t agree with shaming people for the food they’re eating.
