I posted my original donation post on 11/20/20 here [x] detailing how my hours were cut from 40/week to 15/week due to going on a work-from-home ADA accommodation because of COVID. But on 12/2/20, we had some unfortunate updates regarding our beautiful baby..
I had my anatomy scan at 20 weeks exactly, and they found some characteristic signs of spina bifida. Our baby is only in the 3rd percentile for growth, has a notable “lemon sign”, where their head in the second trimester is lemon shaped, and they have fluid in their brain.
The black portions of their head are supposed to be filled with that grey and white texture, and you can see the lemon shape to their head.
We will be seeing a perinatologist to confirm the diagnosis, or figure out the differential diagnosis, like another neural tube defect. This is going to increase our bills, because we will have to travel to different cities to meet with specialists, and have more procedures done. The cut in my hours is both a blessing and a curse, because I now have more time to dedicate to these appointments without altering my teaching schedule, but obviously less money going to gas, food, and house bills, not to mention co-pays and up front procedure costs once the 1st of the year rolls around.
We could be looking at surgery in the near future with me on bed-rest, or surgery right after the baby is born, with a NICU stay at a hospital a few cities away. This is all speculation based on if it is spina bifida.
If anyone can give us a signal boost, that would be super helpful. The past 24 hours have been a whirlwind for my husband and I. We’ve struggled with previous miscarriages, plus fertility issues from my intersex condition and autoimmune disease, so finding out this news about our rainbow baby at 20 weeks has been devastating.
We are praying that our baby is viable and we can continue this pregnancy. I am hopeful that they are, because I feel them moving around pretty consistently now.
This is really hard to share with my followers, let alone random people, so if you have any kind words of encouragement that would be appreciated. Please keep us in your thoughts. Any money donated will go to food, travel/gas, medical costs, and baby supplies. I will add more once we have a better idea of what baby will need accessibility wise.

I’ve had two eugenicists/ableists message me terrible things about my baby, but we’ve had countless other messages that are kind and loving and telling us to stay strong. We are so thankful for all of your kind messages, thank you to everyone who has boosted, messaged, and donated so far. We love all of you!
If you send any cruel messages, you will be blocked. We do not believe in aborting children because they are disabled. We don’t believe in eugenics.
interesting how birthname and deadname are two terms for the same thing, yet are quite opposites.
The dystopian vibe of giving you a choice between "yes" or "not now", instead of yes or no. The relentless invasiveness of apps. If I was taught learned helplessness by direct violence, tech gave me additional tutoring, made sure my immersion in it was continuous.

This looks like something you’d see in a clip advertising a post-apoc survival shooter
You survived this. Even with clenched fists and gritted teeth and neverending wounds, you survived this. I hope you remember that on the mornings when you feel worthless and small. You were given an impossible mountain to climb, and you climbed it to get to the other side.
I’ve reblogged this before and I’ll reblog it again ayoooooooo
would you mind telling more about thoughts on posts like that wrt ADHD and capitalism? I feel like I also have issue with posts like that but I can't articulate why.. like I feel symptoms of adhd are often directly bc of capitalism or at the very least exacerbated by it , but I do wonder what it would be like without capitalism
I’m too lazy to articulate myself so here are some quotes from Capitalism and Disability by Keith Rosenthal and Martha Russell:
“The primary oppression of disabled persons (i.e., of people who could work in a workplace that was accommodated to their needs) is their exclusion from exploitation as wage laborers.6 Studies show that disabled persons experience lower labor-force participation rates, higher unemployment rates, and higher part-time employment rates than non-disabled persons.
[...]
Historical materialism provides a theoretical base from which to explain these conditions and outcomes. Under feudalism, economic exploitation was direct and political, made possible by the feudal concentration of land ownership. While a few owners reaped the surplus, many living on their estates worked for subsistence and disabled people were able to participate in this economy to varying degrees...With the advent of capitalism, people were no longer tied to the land, but they were forced to find work that would pay a wage—or starve; and as production became industrialized, people’s bodies [and minds] were increasingly valued for their ability to function like machines...As work became more rationalized, requiring precise mechanical movements of the body, repeated in quicker succession, impaired persons—the deaf, blind, mentally impaired, and those with mobility difficulties—were seen as—and, without job accommodations to meet their impairments, were—less ‘fit’ to do the tasks required of factory workers, and were increasingly excluded from paid employment.15 And so “the operation of the labour market in the nineteenth century effectively depressed handicapped people of all kinds to the bottom of the market.
[...]
The “medicalization” of disablement and the tools of classification clearly played an important role in establishing divisions between the “disabled” and the “able-bodied.” Disability became an important “boundary” category whereby people were allocated to either a work-based or a needs-based system of distribution. […] The disability category was essential to the development of an exploitable workforce in early capitalism and remains indispensable as an instrument of the state in controlling the labor supply today.21 By focusing on curing so-called abnormalities and segregating those who could not be cured into the administrative category of ‘disabled,’ medicine cooperated in shoving less exploitable workers out of the mainstream workforce.22
‘Disability’ is a social creation which defines who is offered a job and who is not, and what it means varies with the level of economic activity. […]”
Material reality: that most people either need to pay for their sustenance or prepare their own food means the act of sustaining yourself has implicated ableism into the core of the capitalist system. If we got rid of the idea of “disabled (from working)” we would be required to acknowledge that no, not everyone SHOULD have to prepare their own food (or consciously decide to disproportionately spend their earnings) just to eat something high quality and nutritious, and that would necessarily mean setting up systems to feed people, including aiding people who have trouble determining when they feel hungry or following through on preparing food. I get the impulse to say “I really don’t want you to take away my meds, I function more effectively that way” but the problem is not the desire to function in whichever way you please, or the existence of psychiatric medication, it’s what underpins that word EFFECTIVE and how that has empowered truly evil psychiatric beliefs that are equally core to the institution of psychiatry. Really. It’s bigger than “but I like to feel myself.” We know, we do too.
Only 10 us presidents have lost their re-election which makes Trump losing very funny.
This is one hell of an achievement
This is also funnier if you know the reason George Washington only did one term was because he ended his four years and went “I don’t like this. See ya.”
i think you should be allowed to cite scholars who are bad people but only if you put the word (oof) or (yikes) after their name
like Parker (yikes, 1989) or Obbink (big oof, 2007)
VERY late, but I found an anon asking you what Chimlopzock is when I googled it to check my spelling. "Chimlopzock" originates in a rejected Sagan 4 submission of a sapient species called a Chimpus which wore nothing but pants and inexplicably used Minecraft weapons before Minecraft existed. Its religion was a rip-off of Christianity, and Chimlopzock was its god. I have no idea when or why bukbot joined its cult
Thank you for telling me this.
