hey you!! do you like fusions?? self indulgent canon divergent aus full of stuff fans might have asked for??? WHAT ABOUT PLATINUM BONES (KING AND COLLECTORS DYNAMIC)?? then have i got the deal for you!!!!

from the foreword on the doc:

Nightingale is a “what if” canon divergent exercise that asks the bold question of “what if Collector still had a blobby goopy true form? And what if King was able to fuse with that and get cool super powers so he could also look cool and pose with Titan Luz and Harpy Eda?” And so was born Nightingale!

so the other night I had a dream about an AU where Eda and Raine swapped places and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it so:

- Raine was called something like "The Fox Witch" — a cursed bard who travels the Isles with nothing but a mysterious portal door and a song in their heart. Luz ran into them after crossing the portal and ended up staying with them as their apprentice.

- Eda was a wild witch of wide renown attempting to stage a rebellion against the Emperor. She still lived in the Owl House and was still called The Owl Lady, but I can't remember if King was still with her here or not?

- And Darius was..... honestly pretty much the same except he now took on the same role as Lilith, narratively

- Raine's curse became the Fox Beast, which I honestly think was just my brain's way of turning Raine into a sick werewolf, lol

@stuck-in-jelly and I were discussing how we could see the season 3 plot involving the boiling isles mains trying to appease the Collector with a very elaborate, immersive game of House. With lots of ‘everything is fine haha we are a happy, definitely-not-stressed family. there is no war in ba sing se’ I imagine their only comfort while they walk on eggshells and try to plan further action is that Luz, Willow, Amity, Gus, and Hunter are in the human realm away from danger. But I decided to doodle what I imagine their expressions would be like when those kiddos show up again ready to help. Saying ’ Haha no it’s okay we’re all okay. Everything is fine, we’re happy to see you!’ But with ‘WHY ARE YOU HERE’ and thinly (or not even) veiled panic in their eyes. ALSO note: I gave Raine a forearm crutch bc I don’t think the covenheads get thru the day of unity without lasting effects since they are at the center of it. Also bc I use forearm crutches and I say so lol

oh oh oh!! i am so EXCITED to finally unleash this!! my latest little pet project au is NIGHTINGALE! basically a wad divergent plot where the idea of having collector have a true blobby form inside of him was kept, and he and king fused so king ALSO gets a cool super powered form to use alongside his mom and sister!! there are also WAYYY more changes related to this which have eventually evolved into something im writing for it, but im nearly done, and excited to show it all!!

I don't know who needs to hear this

But if you go into the comments section on AO3

And type

Then replace image url (keep the " marks) with the url of a picture

You can leave fan art in the comments of a fic

A few years ago, Nickelodeon did a video for World Turtle Day where they talked about some Turtle Facts on the different Turtle Species of the Rise Turtles

Narrator: Leonardo, the wise cracking hotshot, is a red eared slider

And something I found interesting about the video is that it talked about red eared sliders being territorial

Narrator: Red eared slider’s are peaceful & mostly harmless turtles but they can also be very territorial so don’t mess with their home or they might send you home

A lot of turtles are known for being territorial especially soft-shell turtles which are very territorial so I was kind of surprised that when talking about territorial turtles they specifically chose to mention red eared slider’s being territorial over any of the other species of turtles which made me wonder if that particular fact was chosen due to Leo’s characterisation.

Leo: Hey, nobody does that to my brother! Except my brother.

Leo: Back off, he’s ours. Apparently.

Throughout Rise Leo has been shown to be extremely protective & defensive of his friends & family jumping to defend or protect them whenever someone tries to hurt them in any way which can be seen when Leo gets protective of Raph in the episode Shell in the Cell or when Leo immediately defends Frankenfoot from the Foot Clan the moment he learns that Raph considers Frankenfoot a friend in the episode Sparring partner.

Leo: Hey, future me would be real proud of you. I’m proud of you

Leo has also been shown to be someone who cares about family more than anything else & the second someone can be seen as a family member he gets attached & would do anything for them (even put his life on the line). Which can be seen by how the second he found out that Karai was a Hamato she became ‘Gram-Gram’ to him & he was willing to fight the Shredder for her or how attached he was to Casey Junior after only a day because he knew that his future self was important to Casey Junior.

Leo: But when I see what’s happening to you, and what’s happening to them… I realised it wasn’t about me.

It has been shown time & time again that Leo’s biggest motivator is arguably his families safety which can be seen in the movie where one of Leo’s biggest motivations when fighting the Krang is arguably his family being in danger & one of the biggest anger responses that Leo has ever really shown has been due to Raph getting hurt.

It could be argued that Leo’s protectiveness over his family could possibly partially stem from the fact that Red Eared Sliders are very territorial making Leo especially protective over what he possibly considers ‘his’. As Red Eared Sliders are traditionally territorial & protective over their homes, Leo might be protective over his friends & family as they are his ‘home’ to him.

Leo being protective & possibly territorial towards his family might also explain why Leo seems to hold grudges against former enemies such as Draxum & be reluctant to trust them as Leo’s instincts may still view the former enemies as threats to what he wants to protect.

Leo: You threw me off a roof!

Mikey: Isn’t this nice? When’s the last time we all got together like this huh?

Leo: The time Draxum dropped me off a building?

It might be possible that Leo’s grudge against Draxum isn’t actually motivated over Draxum’s actions against Leo but rather because there might be part of Leo that struggles not to see Draxum as a threat to the people he cares about.

I’m not sure whether or not a red eared sliders territorial nature was supposed to translate into Leo’s protective nature over his family intentionally but I thought it might be an interesting link to make between Leo & his turtle species.

The fact that Red Eared Sliders are known for being peaceful & mostly harmless except when their home is threatened might also be similar to how Leo seems to prefer to act laid back except for when his family needs protecting.

God, have we not evolved? Haven't we been over this topic a million times before?? When you're shipping a non-canon mlm ship, and one half of that ship has a canonical relationship with a woman, stay with me now, that does not mean you have to bash her and spew hatred for her to prop up the mlm relationship. In fact, I would actively discourage doing that.

This is about my frustration with the way a lot of wintersberg fanfic treats Mia Winters btw. The thing that sucks about this, is like there's no nuance, because Mia is a morally grey character, a lot of fanfic just jumps to demonizing her. I would LOVE a wintersberg fanfic to thoughtfully unpack how Ethan would deal with his feelings about Mia were he to have the time. Mia did a lot of things that hurt Ethan, even if she had the best intentions, they still cost him everything. Why can't there be nuance acknowledging that? Mia's done a lot of shady things regarding her relationship to the Connections and Miranda, but Ethan's feelings about her would be complex, if he knew everything I think he would be very angry, but I don't think he would just stop loving her like a lot of fanfiction jumps to. Plus, she's clearly gone through her own mega trauma like Ethan, she just processed it differently than he did. She loved Ethan, it's why she thought she was doing right by him by not telling him the truth. Like, as someone who really loves wintersberg because I think it's fun, the Mia hate is not necessary for the ship to work. They're both dead, it's not like Capcom's gonna make them canon; you don't have to convince them you weirdos.

Also: the fanfic's not finished yet, but Deal by @tabikato seems to actually care about Ethan's complex feelings about Mia without it feeling like character bashing, which I really appreciate. It's also a pretty convincing wintersberg fic, which is a plus. Wintersberg fanfic has a habit of going way too fast into the romance, and I end up not buying it. Karl's an asshole and Ethan's very stubborn. It's gonna take a lot more than Karl's crush to bring them together.

What’s fasinating about the d&d movie is that it is all the fun of d&d removed from the rigid restraints of the the clunky game system: Thrills and laughs and hairbrained schemes minus the minutia of needless rolls or waiting for your turn in initiative to circle around. Part of this is idealization, but as someone who’s obsessed with making my favorite game system the most fun possible I can’t help but draw some comparisons.

Combat: Holga’s fight scenes were a highlight of the film for me, displaying a huge amount of kinetic creativity as she pinballed between different combatants swapping out weapons, bouncing off the surrounding terrain . This is a far, far cry from how being a fighter plays out at the table, as most martial characters are focused into doing just one type of attack as good as they can because it’s their only reliable contribution to combat. Try to model Holga’s fights in game and you’d be caught in a boring slog of dealing 1d4+STR damage to a bunch of guards whittling away at their hitpoint pools, a far cry from the lighting quick flury of smashing, bashing, and flips that make her the film’s action setpiece.

What d&d needs is a system for combat that exists alongside the traditional damage/HP paradigm: an additional layer of complexity for martial characters that encourages tactical thinking and lets those who do their damage up close feel just as cool and as clutch as casters. My mind’s already whirling thinking up something that revolves around stuns, suckerpunches, and positioning, so expect it later this week.

Powercreep: This might be subjective but I find it fascinating that the official stats put out for the party has them hovering around level 16, a point in character progression  a)that  most characters never get to b) by which the game’s difficulty systems have begun to break down. I suspect this was done in order to keep their on-screen abilities in line with how they are in the base rules, but I can’t help but feel like its odd for the “idedalized” dnd experiance to be playing around with toys that most groups will never get their hands on.

In my experience d&d is on a sliding scale of stakes V Shenanigans, with the exact ballance evolving over the course of a campaign:  Your group starts out as a bunch of dumbfucks and at some point while you’re making  making absolute fools out of yourselves you become a found family just in time for the consequences of your actions to circle back around and threaten the realm. First the characters start caring about eachother, then they care about the world, then they have to save that world. Level 16 is, for me, distinctly in “save the world” territory, despite the fact that the HaT crew are clearly still figuring out who they are and what they care about.  It makes me wish D&D was more free with its shenanigan enabling magic/items/class features at lower levels to help fuel these kinds of antics.

Attunement: Perhaps the best “ oh I’m totally going to steal this” moment came from Simon’s attempt to attune to the helm of disjunction. Turning what was otherwise a rote game mechanic into an oppertunity for character growth was genius on behalf of the writers, though one I’d only really employ with items that were as necessary for my plots as the helm was for the heist. Just like Simon’s major flaw was self doubt, I could easily see delicious storytelling potential in throwing up other emotional hurdles depending on the situation: A hero’s sword refusing to attune to the haunted survivor until they’ve come to terms with what they’ve done, an otherwise altruistic character being forced to admit their sin and self interest by an evil-aligned artifact.

Over all, I really enjoyed the movie, though paradoxically It didn’t hook me as much because for me one of the biggest charms of fantasy is the feeling of discoverying a new world, and I’ve been living the d&d world for the past 20 years so it didn’t come of as wild and magical as it could have been, having hewn so close to established d&d material.
