It is a well known fact that Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr share one braincell. This could lead to the quite reasonable assumption that they trade off custody of that braincell like the divorced parents they usually act like. Unfortunately for everyone, that is not the case. They cut the braincell in half and each took half with them. Which is why they are only functional when they are working together, because that is the only time either of them has access to a full braincell.
