@soulfeather-universe

So, I don't know how to write pain like! What words do I use? how do I describe it! I really need some help here!

Avatar

No problem! And sorry about not answering sooner, I was on vacation. To make it up to you, I’ve made one of my trademark Long Posts about it.

TIPS ON HOW TO WRITE PAIN (FOR BOTH ORIGINAL CONTENT WRITERS AND FANFICTION WRITERS)

When I first started writing, about eight years ago, I had the same issue as @imjustafuckinggirl.

How are you supposed to write about pain you’ve never experienced before???

The characters in my book suffer through all sorts of terrible shit, and in no way am I writing from experience, which is marginally easier to do than write about something that has never happened to you.

However, with time, I managed to gather up a few strategies on how to write pain.

1. Don’t Write Paragraphs About It

I know, it’s tempting. You want to convey to the reader just how much pain the character is in, and you think that the pain will be emphasized the more you write about it.

This, however, is a lie.

As a reader, when I’m reading a book or fanfiction where, whenever the writer uses agonizingly long paragraphs to describe when a character is hurt, I skip it.

Entirely.

It’s boring and, quite frankly, unnecessary, especially during a fight or huge battle, which are supposed to be fast-paced.

When it comes to writing about pain, it really is about quality and not quantity.

In my own writing, I stick to short, quick paragraphs, some of them which are barely a line long. This gives it a faster pace and sort of parallels with the scattered, spread out thoughts of the character as they suffer.

2. Describe it Right

Many times, usually in fanfiction, writers over-exaggerate certain injuries.

This partially has to do with the fact that they’ve never experienced that injury before and are just thinking about what it might feel like.

As a girl with two brothers and who often participated in rough play-fights, I can assure you that getting punched is not as painful as you think it is.

(However, it does depend on the area, as well as how hard the punch is, on top of the fact that you have to take into account whether or not the punch broke bones)

I’m reading a high school AU where a character gets punched by a bully (Idk where they got punched it wasn’t stated) and the author is describing it like they’d been shot.

It was to the point where I was like Did the bully have brass knuckles or something????

It was very clear that this author had never been punched before.

When describing the pain of an injury or the injury itself, you have to take into account:

- What object was used to harm the character
- Where the injury is
- How long the character has had the injury
- (For blades) How deep the cut is
- (For blunt force trauma) How hard the hit was
- Whether or not the wound triggers other things (Ex: Concussion, vomiting, dizziness, infection, internal/external bleeding).

There’s also the fact that when some authors described wounds caused by blades such as knives, daggers, and swords, they never take into account the anatomy of a person and which places cause the most blood flow.

Obviously, a cut on your cheek will have less of a blood flow than a cut on your wrist, depending on what the blade hits, and I hope that everyone consults a diagram of veins, capillaries, arteries, etc. when they’re describing blood flow from a certain place.

There’s also the fact that you have to take into account where the blood is coming from. Veins? Arteries?

The blood from arteries will be a brighter red, like vermilion, than the blood from veins, which is the dark crimson everyone likes to talk about.

Not all places gush bright red blood, people!

3. DIFFERENT INJURIES HAVE DIFFERENT KINDS OF PAIN

Here, let me explain.

A punch feels different from a slap.

A broken arm feels different from getting stabbed.

A fall feels different from a dog bite.

I’ll give you a list of all the kinds of things that can be described for the three most common kinds of injuries that happen in stories:

Punch/Blunt Force Trauma

How it feels:

- Aching
- Numbness (In the later stages)
- A single spike of pain before it fades into an ache
- Throbbing

Effects:

- Vomiting (If the character is punched in the gut)
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Broken bones
- Unconsciousness (Blow to the head)
- Dizziness (Blow to the head)
- Concussion (Also a blow to the head)
- Internal bleeding
- Death (In the case of concussions and internal bleeding and broken bones- ribs can pierce lungs)

Stab Wound/Cut

How it feels:

- Stinging (only shallow wounds have just stinging)
- Burning
- With stab wounds, I feel like describing the effects of it make it more powerfully felt by the reader

Effects:

- Bleeding (Consult chart of the circulatory system beforehand for the amount of blood flow that should be described and what color the blood should be)
- Dizziness (Heavy blood loss)
- Unconsciousness
- Infection (if left unattended)
- Death

Gunshot

How it feels:

- Depends on the caliber bullet, from how far away they were shot (point-blank range is nothing like being shot from a distance), and in what place. Do careful research and then make your decision.

Effects:

- Bleeding(Consult chart of the circulatory system beforehand for the amount of blood flow that should be described and what color the blood should be. Also take into effect the above variables for blood flow as well.)
- Dizziness (Heavy blood loss)
- Infection (if left unattended)
- Death

Some things that a character may do while they’re injured:

- Heavy/Harsh/Ragged breathing

- Panting

- Making noises of pain

  • gasping
  • grunting
  • hissing
  • groaning
  • whimpering
  • yelping (when the injury is inflicted)
  • screaming
  • shrieking
  • wailing

- Crying/ Weeping/Sobbing/Etc.

- Clenching their teeth

- Unable to speak

- Pressing their hands against a stab wound/cut to try and stem the bleeding

- Eyesight going out of whack (vision blurring and tilting, the room spinning, black spots consuming sight)

- Eyes rolling up into their head

- Trembling/shaking

- Ears riniging (from gunshot)

HOPE THIS HELPED!

Fantasy Guide to Common Poisons

Poison is one of the best ways of dispatching a character, political enemy, unwanted spouse or annoying neighbours. Here are some of the top interesting poisons and if you don’t choose any, I’ll be adding a post on how to create your own poison. Please don’t kill anybody in real life (there I think that covers the legal side). Let’s kill some characters.

Nightshade

Or as it is more commonly referred to as Belladonna is a poisonous flowering plant. All of this plant is poison but the berries are infamously toxic. It is called Belladonna (pretty woman) as it was a cosmetic. It is poison yet it is used today in modern cosmetic surgery.

Hemlock

Hemlock is a flowering plant. All parts of the plant contain poison. It causes paralysis, mostly in the respiratory system.

Cyanide

Cyanide is a poisonous chemical. It kills by latching onto iron in the blood and constricting them, not allowing them to to transfer oxygen.

Batrachotoxin

This is a neurotoxin that lives on the sking of dart frogs. One frog has enough toxin kill around two dozen people. The poison attacks the nerves, causing paralysis.

Azaleas

Common flowers that are poisonous. It’s symptoms are nausea, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, coma, and death. It takes six hours to work.

Arsenic

This poison causes gastric distress, burning pain, vomiting, and bloody diarrhea. Arsenic is almost virtually indectable only found when a high dose is used or if there is an almond smell off the corpse.

I’ve used this info in my stories, these are great ^^

Anonymous asked:

It maybe just me but whenever I hear the Japanese VA refer to MC/you as "kisama", I feel like it's derogatory in a way? In Japanese, there are several ways to call someone "you" but "kisama" seems like the most demeaning one out of "anata, omae, kimi and (such that I probably forgot)" I simply don't feel the love when they say that...

Hello, Precious!

Isn’t it funny how words change over time?

Ain’t (formerly “amn’t”) is a perfectly fine contraction of “am not,” “are not,” and “is not,” but we can thank Charles Dickens for giving it the reputation of being “incorrect” today (it’s not), by associating it with the lower classes in his books, and therefore taking it straight out of the speech patterns of educated society.

From what I understand, “kisama 貴様,” was not always used when being rude, as the “ki 貴” in “kisama” denotes “value,” “honor,” “precious,” etc.

Appearing around the 16th century, kisama was used for respected individuals of high rank, typically among the warrior classes.

At the time, its usage was polite, so Nobunaga, who uses it often, would be applying the archaic intention of “you,” when he addresses his modern-day beloved.

“Omae お前”  was the same way, once an honorific, and now downgraded to simply “you,” sometimes rudely.

Since we get to hear their voices in the game, we can discern the context by their tone, the same way as in English.

For example:

“Can you help me?” hopeful/inquisitive

“Who knocked my cup over? Was it you, again!?” rude/sarcastic/angry/accusatory

It’s hard to imagine that as hopelessly, helplessly in love with Chatelaine as Nobunaga is, that he’s calling her “you bastard,” instead of a respectful “you.” unless she killed Kenny

I don’t remember seeing it, so I may have forgotten, but does Chatelaine ever say anything about being called “omae” or “kisama?”

To her modern ears, it could potentially be an insult that could lead to a misunderstanding; but to Masamune, who calls her “omae,” and Nobunaga who uses “kisama,” they are both being polite to her, and using the correct terms of their time period.

For English speakers, imagine that you traveled to the 11th century and no one could understand your saying “you,” because that word wouldn’t really catch on for another several hundred years.

They might think that you’re being rude or even calling them some kind of name!

Hello! Sorry to butt in, but this is actually a really interesting topic that we’ve always wanted to talk about!

To begin with: both of you are right! Kisama (貴様) was once an honorific way to refer to someone, and now it’s rude to the point that you could translate it to mean “bastard”, or other equally colorful ways to refer to “you”. And indeed, Nobunaga could be seen as simply using the term because of the time period.

However, one thing that you can’t forget is that you, the player, are not from the Sengoku period. And so, for most players (particularly Japanese players) “kisama” is going to sound extremely rude. This is intentional. Because Nobunaga is, to most people, extremely rude. He believes himself to be above everyone. And why shouldn’t he think that (stay with us here, we’re getting our point!)? Position-wise, he’s close to being the King of the World (“world”, being Japan, of course), and as far as he is aware, no one can match up to his power. Therefore, to Nobunaga, everyone is a “kisama”, regardless of how they feel about it. “Kisama” is a sign of his position at the top.

And that’s an important point–that EVERYONE is “kisama”. Part of what makes the modern usage of “kisama” so provacative is that in most cases when you see it used, the character would not normally refer to another person that way. The character usually has to be pretty angry to switch to that word, which adds to the insult. For Nobunaga, it’s just a statement of fact. He is Nobunaga, above all, therefore you, who are not Nobunaga, are “kisama”.

So while Nobunaga is in no way being respectful, he is also not being especially rude to you (relative to anyone else) either. His self-important nature is also a nice contrast to his ticklishness as well as his extreme fondness for sweets…and you :)

Masamune (and almost every other guy’s) use of “omae” is more them being casual with you than rude, as well. “Omae” is an interesting way to refer to a person, as it can either be a sign of closeness or dislike depending on the context. Here’s a list of what the warlords call you in Japanese! Note that Ieyasu is the only one who calls you “anta” (a kind of slangy way of saying “anata”), Sasuke is the only one who calls you “Heroine-san”, and Mitsunari, polite as ever, calls you “Heroine-sama” (due to our translation style, this unfortunately was lost in translation entirely)!

Nobunaga: Kisama (貴様), Heroine Masamune: Omae (お前), Heroine Hideyoshi: Omae (お前), Heroine Ieyasu: Anta (あんた), Heroine Mitsuhide: Omae (お前), Heroine Mitsunari: Anata (貴女), Heroine-sama Yukimura: Omae (お前), Heroine Shingen: Kimi (君), Heroine Kenshin: Anata (貴女), Heroine Sasuke: Kimi (君), Heroine-san Kennyo: Omae (お前), Heroine

(Note: “kisama” isn’t really a word people use in everyday modern life. You hear it a lot more in anime/games, and if someone used it seriously it’s more likely they’d be laughed out than taken at their word. “Temee” is more of the word you would hear in its place, incidentally another word that started off polite and became extremely insulting with time).

Sorry for the sudden lecture, but we hope you find this as interesting as we do!

YOU KNOW WHAT THE BEST THING EVER IS? IT’S SOULMATE AUS LIKE GOD DAMN I HAVE SEEN SO MANY ON FFN/LJ/AO3/TUMBLR OVER THE YEARS LIKE:

  • the one where you only see color once you meet your soulmate (so you don’t know them until you see them), and it goes away when they die
  • the one where you don’t know your soulmate until you touch them
  • the one where you don’y know your soulmate until you hear them speak, or hear them speak a certain word; your name, for example
  • the one where you get the name of the person in their handwriting on your body somewhere at a certain age
  • the one where the first thing they say to you appears instead
  • the one where you get each others’ fingerprints
  • the one where you get matching marks/symbols/tattoos
  • the one where your marks or words that change depending on what’s going on with your soulmate
  • the one with the clock that counts down the time until you meet your soulmate
  • the one where when you sleep you dream of whatever they’re experiencing from their point of view until you find them, or AFTER you find them
  • the one where you can straight up talk to them in dreams until/after you find them
  • the one where you form a telepathic/empathetic link until/after you find them
  • the one where you share extreme physical sensation until/after you find them; if one of you hurts the other one hurts, if one of you is getting lucky the other one gets a little hot and bothered
  • the one where the closer you are to them the more aware of them you become, and you find them playing a hot/cold game; for instance, colors get brighter and brighter the closer you are and fade into gray when they’re too far away
  • the one where once you turn a certain age/one night a year you swap bodies with them for one night and you have a limited amount of time to leave/collect clues to their identity
  • the one where being next to your soulmate can heal you from things people don’t normally heal from
  • the one where only your soulmate can kill you (can you still be killed by age/disease? who knows!)
  • the one where reincarnation is also a thing and meeting your soulmate either unlocks or erases memories or your past lives until the next one
  • the one where in universes with magic meeting your soulmate activates your powers/unlocks more powerful magic

SOULMATE AUS WITH COMPLICATIONS:

  • blind characters who can’t see if the world’s in color or black and white
  • characters like x-men’s rogue who literally can’t touch people; characters who have been through trauma who don’t want to touch people
  • hard of hearing characters like clint barton who can’t hear their soulmate speak without hearing aids/at all or on the flipside characters who can’t speak; maybe it still works in sign language, or maybe it doesn’t
  • people who can’t read/can’t read the language the words on their body are in
  • characters like bucky barnes who’ve lost hands and/or had their fingerprints removed
  • soulmate clocks that time out in the middle of the crowd; there’s an entire craigslist category for finding who else was there that day with a clock that timed out too
  • famous characters speaking to or performing for a crowd and suddenly their world is in color/thier clock times out/etc and every member of the audience pretends to be this celebrity’s soulmate and a cinderella type situation ensues with the finding
  • soulmates playing the hot/cold game and they kEEP MISSING EACH OTHER
  • insomniacs who rarely sleep, much less at the same time/different time than their soulmate
  • soulmate ot3s/ot4s/otmores where you dream in varying people’s povs every time you sleep and get super confused
  • people who get sick or injured and frantically search for their soulmate so they can survive
  • people who need to be in medically induced comas and their soulmates have to stay away so they don’t accidentally wake them up
  • the one where soulbonding is actually a choice and someone chooses to bond with someone they may not know or like to save their lives
  • new souls who don’t get memories of past lives because they don’t have one and panic
  • muggles/people without powers who don’t get them upgraded or unlocked

COMBINATION AUS:

  • the one where you one or both of you have to do all three (see your soulmate, touch your soulmate, hear your soulmate), or all three have to happen at least once between the 2+ of you
  • or it’s completely random how you find your soulmate: one of you gets a name and the other gets a fingerprint, one of you has to hear your soulmate and one of you has to see them, etc; particularly useful if you happen to be blind or deaf
  • same for characters with disabilities/who have “complications”: they get or find a different way of finding their soulmate, not better or worse, just different

THEN THERE’S SOULMATE AUS THAT DON’T HAVE TO CONFORM TO LIFELONG MONOGAMY:

  • the ones where you have more than one romantic soulmate at the same time or you get a new soulmate after the first die
  • the ones where people have multiple soulmates of different types and it’s color coded; a red name/mark/etc for love, a blue one for friendship; for the ones where you start seeing color you get a new one for each soulmate
  • the ones where some people have romantic soulmates and some don’t, and those that don’t are still perfectly happy anyway, maybe in a relationship anyway, maybe not
  • the ones where some people have multiple romantic soulmates who may or may not also be soulmates with each other
  • aromantic or asexual people who have soulmates who are not and they manage to work it out
  • romantic and sexual people who don’t have soulmates but find happiness anyway, either with someone like them or someone not like them

SOULMATE AUS THAT EXPLORE THE RAMIFICATIONS OF SOULMATES BEING A THING:

  • the ones where soulmates are for everyone and get legal aid to help stay together, like if their in-laws try to keep them apart/someone risks getting deported/someone gets drafted/whatever
  • the ones where soulmates are super super rare and TECHNICALLY get exempted from shitty things like “people of different races/the same sex/etc can’t get married/have relations/etc” but maybe still face a lot of prejudice and they fight to get those types of awful laws lifted for everyone
  • agencies that exist to help you find your soulmate or figure out which soulmate thing you have but some of them are just shams, bonus points for this being in a verse where the thing is exceedingly rare to begin with
  • people pretending to be soulmates to take advantage of the laws, for good or ill; the couple who loves just as fiercely as a soulmates who will do anything to stay together, or the shitty people who try to claim they’re mated to people who’ve rejected them so they “have” to stay together
  • tabloid mags photoshopping matching soulmate marks or following big legal cases where someone tries to prove or disprove that they are soulmates with someone else
  • soulmates in universes where they’re a rarity or rare soulmate types like ot3s in dodging government officials because they don’t want to become lab rats
  • people who don’t believe in soulmates until it happens to them, or people who believe hardcore and want to find theirs but they don’t necessarily have one
  • little rituals that make finding your soulmate more likely, like shaking hands with people as often as possible, repeating each other’s names after you’re introduced, etc

just give me alllll the soulmate aus ok, give me people finding each other in spite of complications, give me all the delightful plot twists, give me detailed worlds where this changes the norms

feel free to reblog with sources! (or MORE AUS.) a little over half of these are things i’ve seen elsewhere over time and i cannot remember where they are all from

haha or if you’re into this sorta thing you could just take pity on me and reblog it anyway this took an embarrassingly long time to type up oh my god ;;;;;;;;;

Soulmate AU Story Ideas

Because I am complete trash for Soulmate AUs, I decided to try and make a post about them. Hope you guys like it! ♥

✖ Soulmate AUs involving measurement

[ Time // Countdown ]

  • Where for whatever reason, your clock is stuck/frozen/it’s not counting down anymore but it hasn’t reached 00:00:00:00 yet and you’re freaking out because this hasn’t happened to anyone before.
  • Reverse one where the clock starts at 00:00:00:00 from the moment you’re born and stops counting the moment you meet your soulmate, so it’s like a reminder that “It took me 19 years, 11 months, 20 hours, and 13 seconds to meet you, you fuck, and you do it by spilling coffee on me, thanks, now my laptop’s broken—what, you’re buying me a new one? Okay.”
  • Your soulmate clock is actually a countdown of how long your soulmate has left to live and holy shit you have to find your soulmate soon because your clock says you have three months left (for angst maybe).
  • Alternate version of above where your clock is a countdown of how long you and your soulmate have left to find each other or else you both will die because the universe is sadistic af—and if you find your soulmate you get to live longer.
  • Another alternate version of above where you and your soulmate’s clocks have each other’s life spans on it but you can give your time to your soulmate if you want to so they can live longer. Again, because the universe is sadistic af.
  • The soulmate clock is actually something breakable and you accidentally break yours or vice versa.
  • Alternate version of above where someone purposely breaks their soulmate clock so they can be with someone they fell in love with that isn’t their soulmate/they are strongly opposed to the whole soulmate idea and want to defy the system.
  • Your clock is counting down too fast (as opposed to everyone else’s) and you have no idea what’s going on anymore.
  • It’s been a busy week and after finally having some time to yourself, you just happened to look at your soulmate clock and see that it’s already at 00:00:00:00 and you don’t know when that happened because you don’t religiously check your clock either.
  • Your soulmate clock is actually telling you what time it is where your soulmate is currently at (could include AM/PM/time zones or not, for example 3:46:31 MDT).
  • I already wrote something similar to this but a countdown au where your soulmate has died and you two still happen to meet each other (one is a ghost, one is alive) and the other finds peace after the meeting.

[ Distance ]

  • Where you actually have a compass instead of a clock, and it leads you to where your soulmate should be.

✖ Soulmate AUs involving colors

[ Eyes ]

  • Reverse colors AU where you can see in color but once you meet/marry your soulmate your world turns black and white, this is how people can tell that married couples really love each other because they’re willing to give up a world of colors for their soulmate. If your soulmate dies you get to see color again.
  • Between you and your soulmate, only one of you can see other colors and the other sees black and white. Like you can see all the other colors except black/white/grays, and the other one can only see in black/white/grays. If you two meet, you’ll get to see all the colors.
  • You can see colors but realize that recently, with each passing day, your world of colors is becoming a little duller and you’re panicking because you don’t know what’s going on, or what it means, or if your soulmate is okay.
  • You can see colors and your world turns black and white but it doesn’t necessarily have to mean your soulmate is dead. There can be other factors that will result in a black and white world like losing eyesight, but you don’t know that.
  • You will be able to see the world in full color once you meet your soulmate but until then, you can only see the world in the eye color of your soulmate. However, you can alter the color your soulmate can see, for example, by wearing contact lenses. Like if you wear blue contact lenses, your soulmate sees the world in blue, purple makes them see the world in purple and etc. And you realize each day/week you get to see the world in a different color because your soulmate is being all cute and would want you to see every color there is and they probably have a huge collection of contact lenses by the time you both meet.
  • Everyone is born color blind and their sights are fixed once they meet their soulmate, or your soulmate is blind and you have the choice to give them your sight, but it’s irreversible and if they die, they take your sight with them.

[ Hair ]

  • If you dye your hair, your soulmate’s hair color changes as well and you swear the moment you see your soulmate you will choke them because you just woke up with your hair colored like a rainbow and it’s your first job interview at a prestigious company what the fuck. Oh, and your best friend just took a picture to post online and wait—what, how many likes is that?
  • Like the above AU but you only get highlights for the dyed color of your soulmate’s hair. If your hair color returns to normal, it means your soulmate has returned to their natural hair color too.
  • Related to the first two AUs—you decide to get revenge on your soulmate by dying your hair the most absurd color combination you can think of and the exchange goes back and forth until you meet each other. It can be that if you meet, you two can dye your hair without affecting the other anymore.
  • If your soulmate dyes their hair your fingernails turn into that color (like nail polish?) and you’re hoping your soulmate isn’t bald by the time you meet because it’s the fifth time the past two months that your nails have changed colors.
  • If your soulmate dyes their hair, your eyes turn into that color and you wish your soulmate wouldn’t change it again because you really like this shade in your eyes.

✖ Soulmate AUs involving any kind of body mark

[ Tattoos ]

  • You and your soulmate have identical tattoos on your wrist about the date when you’ll meet each other. Place and time can be included (as opposed to the countdown AUs).
  • Like the countdown AU, an alternate version where it’s your soulmate’s date of death that’s tattooed on your skin.
  • Where a tattoo isn’t set from the moment you’re born and whatever tattoos your soulmate gets, you get it too and it’s all cool because you kind of like the designs, except you also feel the pain of getting a tattoo and that sucks because you’re kind of in the middle of an exam right now and it’s getting harder to concentrate on your work.
  • You remove your tattoo because you hate the idea of someone dictating who you can be with for the rest of your life and the person who’s removing it happens to be your soulmate and they’re torn between letting you know and just not bringing it up because you kind of went there because you didn’t want a soulmate and vice versa.
  • Your tattoo is only half complete and it completes itself the moment you find your soulmate, like if you had half a heart, you’d get a full heart on your skin.
  • You’re not sure if the other half of your tattoo should end with this person’s words, or that one’s—wait, I think it might end with the phrase of that other person too. It’s just a very open-ended sentence…
  • You don’t have a name tattoo on your wrist, meaning you probably don’t have a soulmate but you didn’t want your friends to tease you about it so you had a tattoo made on your wrist about some name you picked at random because your friend said she wanted to see it soon. And then somehow there’s a person claiming to be your soulmate and they’re kind of cute and sweet so you don’t know what to do.
  • Because the universe is sadistic af, it only gave you the first letter of your soulmate’s name.
  • Your tattoo is like a mood ring, it changes its color depending on what your soulmate is feeling at the moment and you’re not sure exactly what rainbow means.

[ Scars ]

  • The only way for your scars to disappear is when your soulmate kisses them goodbye.

[ Others ]

  • Whatever mark you get on your skin your soulmate gets it too so one day, you just kind of just get a sharpie and start writing on your skin. You definitely didn’t expect to get a reply, but you did. Now it’s five in the morning and you’re just about covered in ink and this will be a pain to wash off later.
  • Imagine the above point but like, your soulmate maybe falls off a bike and you write on your arm what happened, and your soulmate replies to reassure you everything’s okay. Yes, you always carry a non-permanent marker to write on your skin at all times.
  • You accidentally fell down the stairs and broke a leg, oh, and fate must love you because it seems your soulmate also broke the other leg (or something else) and whatever happens to the other, you feel it too (no actual injury but you feel the same amount of pain) so now you’re in the hospital and you happen to meet your soulmate in the waiting area.
  • Wait, imagine the above point but way into the future and you’re about to give birth and your soulmate must be cursing you and rolling on the floor by the operating table or the waiting area screaming murder and punching walls while crying. Also periods, yes periods. Okay, I’ll shut up now.
  • You can choose to take the pain of your soulmate away. Like if they’re sick or even if they just have a paper cut, you can choose to transfer the pain/sickness to yourself instead and they’ll heal. You can only do it once you meet them though, since what happens to them doesn’t happen to you, unless you transfer it to yourself.
  • Like above but what if the pain becomes two times or more worse. Imagine someone afraid of pain, and the other soulmate shouldering everything or maybe you can half the pain your soulmate feels if you can’t handle taking everything on your own.
  • Alternate version of above two points where you can also transfer your pain to your soulmate. Imagine the payback you can do.

✖ Soulmate AUs involving reincarnation

  • There wasn’t a soulmate system in place before, now it’s about a thousand and more years later, and—wait, aren’t you the person that killed me in that back alley?
  • Where you’re reborn with the memories of your soulmate and you can only get your past memories if you meet each other again in this lifetime.
  • You somehow find a diary/journal of your old self and read through the contents of how you met your soulmate centuries ago.
  • Your soulmate was an artist of centuries ago, and currently, you’re an art student at university (or not but you’re taking an arts class). Then one day for a field trip, you go to a far-away museum and you just find yourself staring at what was your reflection, wearing different clothes to fit the timeline but it was definitely a split-image of you, on one of the framed displays.
  • Alternate version of the above where your soulmate still was an artist of centuries ago but you were there too, and you both were able to meet again in this lifetime. You don’t remember anything but you’d be at the museum, looking at the picture that looks like you with curiosity until your soulmate (who remembers everything) comes by and asks you what you think of the painting.
  • You’re sent to an insane asylum because everyone is convinced you’ve lost your hold on reality since you’re the only one that remembers everything from your past life. Also, that new doctor is your soulmate.
  • Your soulmate from the past life is not your soulmate in this life.
  • You become a writer and your series of novels become extremely popular, but what they don’t know is that you’re retelling your previous life where certain circumstances made it so you and your soulmate did not end up together but your soulmate promises to be with you the next lifetime. At a book signing you open the book cover of a fan’s copy to see something written on the front page: “I’m sorry I took so long.”
  • You don’t remember anything from your previous life but your soulmate does—your first meeting under the tree with the broken swing in summer, the way you smiled when you met each other again at the start of the school year, your eyes that were filled with such mirth and depth and beauty, even the way your hands fit together like missing piece of a puzzle—everything, even the gasps for air, the coarse little pleas, the way you stared with a look of betrayal until your bright eyes became nothing but a dull sheet of color at the hands encasing your neck in a vice grip.
  • You keep going to this place, and you always notice another person here too. Neither of you know that this is the place where the both of you had died/first met in the past life.

✖ Soulmate AUs involving dreams

  • Kind of a reincarnation AU where you’re losing the distinction between reality and dreams because when you’re asleep, you actually relive your past life, and you’re not sure if you’d much rather stay in the past or in the present anymore.
  • If you’re on separate time zones, when you sleep, you see the world in the eyes of your soulmate at present time. You see the world through your soulmate’s eyes, what they’re eating, who they’re talking to, the contents of the essay paper they’re trying to finish, but if they look into a mirror/reflective surface/picture, the image is blurred so you don’t really have a clue what they look like.
  • You see your soulmate in the eyes of their friend instead.
  • Imagine that soulmates just have this ability to dream together/meet each other in your dreams regardless of whether or not you two meet in real life. Your dreams could then be like a real-life video game, for example, you two could be in a zombie-apocalypse type of dream and you both would try your best to help each other out. If one gets bitten/dies you wake up and your soulmate is there to tell you everything is alright or tease you how you couldn’t shoot fast enough and then you’d both go back to sleep and maybe start round two.
  • Just like the above point, imagine how you and your soulmate could pretty much be with each other even after you’d both gone to your separate homes/shared bed.
  • Your soulmate is dead and the only way you two can see each other again is in your dreams and everyday your soulmate tries to make sure you know they love you and will always be there for you the moment you close your eyes and retire for the night.

✖ Other Soulmate AUs

  • You and your soulmate can communicate with thoughts and your soulmate happens to be a math major and you really need help with this test right now.
  • On some days, whatever your soulmate thinks of is something you can hear in your mind and your soulmate is currently reading really hardcore smut fics and you’re trying so hard not to mess up this class presentation which shoulders half your mark for the semester.
  • You get to share the same talents as your soulmate and you probably hit the jackpot because it’s the first time you’ve ever touched this instrument but you’re quite the professional at it, what? Shredding? I don’t know what that is but—oh… hey okay, I just did it I think.
  • The Red String of Fate exists, and only some people have the ability to see the strings, and these people can actually cut strings and knot other people’s strings in to alter the soulmate laws. Your best friend’s wedding is tomorrow and they know you can see the string. They ask you to help them defy the laws of the universe and help them be with the person they love even though they know that’s not their soulmate. You know they love each other so much so you help them, even though the person your best friend’s marrying/your best friend is your soulmate.
  • How about like the colors AU except it can be your voice or your hearing instead that comes and goes when your soulmate dies. Imagine how your soulmate’s voice is the first and the last thing you’ll ever hear.

So I decided to just make a post of all the ideas I’ve thought of so far for each theme! I tried to think of things I haven’t read before but I’m pretty sure with tons of people out there, some of these are sure to exist already. I was also planning to write more but maybe next time, my heart hurts already from typing these ;////;)’

I hope you guys like it though and please feel free to add on to this or make these into stories please I’ll love you forever and tag me please I’d love to read them.
