I’m so happy to hear that! Also, YES, enemies to lovers is actually my #1 favorite trope (seriously, it’s the main thing I look for when I choose books and fics in other fandoms), but I haven’t made a rec list for that since I figure drarry is enemies to lovers by default, you know? At least on some level.

So for this list I tried to pick the ones where they start out feeling more like enemies than they usually do (what with the forgiveness, the unrequited feelings etc. that are common in drarry fic). I hope you find something new!

Drarry enemies to lovers

• Temptation on the Warfront by alizarincrims0n (180k)Draco Malfoy is forced into hiding with the Golden Trio and dragged into their search for horcruxes. What ensues is a journey of redemption, unexpected friendships and an unwanted, turbulent romance with Harry Potter. (The best part about this fic is how angsty and passionate it is. Harry and Draco still hate each other, but they have to work together against their mutual enemy.)

• Tempus Fugit, by Poison Pen (93k)A monumental cock-up in Potions means that Harry and Draco have more to contend with than mutual enmity. A journey of discovery, self-reflection and love. (Aaahh, I love this one! Harry and Draco are thrown into the future where they’ve been lovers for years. But they’re still the teenagers that hate each other. How are they supposed to pretend to be in love in order to not raise suspicion?)

• A Thousand Beautiful Things by geoviki (104k)Draco Malfoy struggles with changed fortunes, shifted alliances, an ugly war, and an unusual spell, with the help of a concerned professor, an insightful house-elf, and an unexpected Gryffindor friend. (This is set during the war, written way before the series was finished, so it’s AU in many ways. It’s angsty, plotty, and pretty much one-of-a-kind. Draco and Harry are enemies on opposite sides for a long time in this fic.)

• Secrets, by Vorabiza (411k)Beginning with Draco’s unexpected arrival at the Dursleys, Harry’s summer after sixth year becomes filled with activity and many secrets. As his summer progresses, Harry generates several unexpected allies as he finds himself actively becoming the leader of the Light side.(I really enjoy this fic, it’s so different from most other things I’ve read–and it’s so much fun. Draco is still a Death Eater in this, so they are on opposite sides. Harry is the leader of the Light side while literally sleeping with the enemy.)

• Reparations, by Sara’s Girl (87k)Harry is about to discover that the steepest learning curve comes after Healer training, and that second chances can be found in unexpected places.(My all-time second favorite fic, with this amazing characterizations, plot, and writing. Harry “Malfoy Is Up To Something” Potter, as a Healer-in-Training, is forced to work with Draco for a month. It’s a disaster… or is it?)

• House Proud, by astolat (23k)His house liked Draco Malfoy more than him. (This is a very well-written piece filled with fascinating magical theory. Harry despises Draco even more than usual for “trying to take his house from him”, while Draco thinks Harry is a careless, selfish git. It’s lovely.)

• Salt on the Western Wind, by Sara’s Girl (60k)When the war isn’t quite as over as it first appears, a guilt-ridden Harry is sent to a mysterious safe-house. Among sandwiches, insomnia, and Mills & Boon, he discovers something quite unexpected.(Taking place during the war, this is a slow-burn in which Harry and Draco go from hating each other to… well, loving each other. It’s beautifully written, as per usual with this author, and the characterizations are on point.)

Draco was alone. He hated being alone, although he wouldn’t admit it. His friends had most likely figured it out by this point—he was always inviting them over or showing up randomly throughout the day. But tonight, everyone had been busy. He was alone. There was a wine glass in his hand, filled almost half way with the red liquid. He didn’t drink it, he couldn’t. The taste was sour and it looked...too much like blood. It reminded him of too many things. It was more of a symbol. He couldn’t control anything anymore and so he controlled himself. Gave himself access to things that seemed desirable but quickly stopped himself from indulging. Maybe it was so that he didn’t indulge in the one thought he was always thinking. That one fantasy in the back of his head that he wasn’t sure even Pansy knew about. It was impossible. Draco didn’t like thinking of it because there was no way it could ever happen. He placed the wine glass on the kitchen counter and walked across the apartment to the front window.

He couldn’t stay in the manor. Not when every surface reeked of the blood spilled, not when every surface reeked of Him. Of his army. Of all of Draco’s memories. He didn’t like to think about those, either. His memories of before. Before this apartment, before his muggle coffee shop job, before the war. And then there was Harry. Draco couldn’t think about that. He wouldn’t let himself. Draco was never as good as the Boy Who Lived. He never would be. That fact had haunted him for years, showing itself through snide comments and empty threats. Draco was second best. Until he’d stopped comparing himself to Potter. And when he wasn’t competing with Harry, he instead grew fond of his sarcasm and innocence and brokenness. Maybe too fond. Draco turned his back against the window. From outside, he looked beautiful. The rain running down the windows distorted his state into a beautiful image. A fallen boy. All alone. He was broken.

There was a knock on the door. Draco didn’t want to rush. He wasn’t even sure he wanted to answer it. He wasn’t quite in the mood to uphold a conversation with whoever was standing on the other side of the door. Until he locked eyes with... Harry Potter.

“Oh, um, Potter,” Draco sputtered, looking him up and down. He was very clearly injured, his white shirt stained red with blood, red like the wine Draco suddenly wished he’d downed. Harry was almost on the ground, too. His feet swayed and he was leaning against the wooden door frame like it was all that was keeping him upright. He looked up at Draco. There was something in his eyes, something Draco hadn’t seen since the war. Defiance. Determination. Fear.

Draco had spent the last three years trying to forget that look, trying to forget Harry Potter. His eyes, his scar, his stupid hair. It wasn’t an easy task. Not when his name and face was littered over every book and paper in the wizarding world. Not when Draco had done so many things to hurt him, things that he hadn’t apologised for. Not when he was in love with Potter.

Draco blinked, looking down at Harry.

“Are you—what happened?” he asked, opening the door wider. Harry tried to stand.

“I...I didn’t...know where else to go,” he said. He stumbled then, through the door. Draco shot forward, taking Harry’s weight in his arms. He heaved an unconscious Harry up and closed the door.

Shit. This should be good.

Drarry authors I’ve been reading from and art mediums I associate them with

Bixgirl1- acrylic. each stroke and layer feels so decisive, and she’s incredibly prolific and versatile

Quicksilvermaid-pressed charcoal because my god, dark with sensual edges and exquisite control

Magpie_fngrl- gouache (a more opaque watercolor), bright and vivid with the free flow of water. The ultimate illustrator’s tool! A peculiar medium that’s so hard to tame but some just pull it off beautifully

Femmequixotic- charcoal pencil. so elaborate and heavy and emotionally comes at me. definitely not an experience I can take on every day

Tepre- oil paint (I think of paintings by La Touche) thick, thick swirls of emotion

Tackytiger- oil pastel. bold, lush, and luminous with details that feel tangible and STICK with me. These take a particularly gritty artist to tackle, too (~~and are tacky to the touch~~)

Firethesound- graphite pencil. delicate with a soft, poignant touch and a gentle consistency that eases me into any emotional state. I think AOSLB has also become a staple foundational experience for newer drarry readers?

Lettered- bai miao (traditional chinese line drawings.) her worlds and characters feel so masterfully distilled, and I’m equally obsessed with both the uttered words and everything that’s left unspoken. Supple lines laid down with hyperfixation and to be taken in with hyperfixation

GallaPlacidia- collage I always find myself exposed to so many fresh and dynamic elements in her writing, and they come together in the most unexpected ways. She experiments with inspiration from so many different books and writes with such a modern edge

Shealwaysreads- silk embroidery her prose is so beautiful, full of luster, and brimming with a delicate sensibility I want to dress in and fill my life with

Lq_traintracks -sculpture. renderings of desire so fiercely dimensional I can feel human forms leaping off the page- I can almost picture the way light dances off each body at every angle. I read all her stories with endless love and arousal running through my veins- HEART AFLAME EVERY PART AFLAME THIS IS NOT A GAME

Writcraft -polaroid photography. I always experience their stories with a dreamlike nostalgia. they all feel like cherished memories with feels that will haunt me for years

Lomonaaeren- medieval tapestry. epic tales chronicled by mature, steady hands

Frayach- etchings. life feels so bleak, dark, and beautifully harsh.

aideomai- I haven’t read much by her yet, but ~~Tacky~~ her fans talk about her stories with so much fear and reverence I feel like I am about to enter a monastery or pharaoh’s tomb, so I’m thinking Florentine frescoes or ancient Egyptian paintings with hieroglyphs—her summaries feel so cryptic and her worlds always thrum with mysterious underpinnings only she is privy to until the end
