Lucifer, You Little Shit

So, it turns out it is all Lucifer’s fault. Huh. I mean, it’s not like we didn’t see it before after learning that the Illuminati isn’t just some creepy cult-y organization that hangs over the Order of the Knights like some kind of vulture flying over a carcass. We learned that they prioritize this idea of a ‘perfect world’ and are willing to sacrifice anything, in some cases even their own lives, to achieve it thanks to Lucifer. Both humans and Demons have somehow been convinced to blindly follow him, and the worst part is that I’m not sure he’s fully aware of what he’s doing – which makes him even more dangerous.

To him, he’s just trying to emulate the human emotions of love and compassion, trying to make everyone feel welcomed and alive the same way he’s been craving all this time. But it’s precisely this selfish want that makes it so much darker than he thinks it is. He isn’t human, and he doesn’t fully understand what these emotions intent. He wants to do what makes him happy in order to make others happy, but humans and Demon Kings have incredibly different needs.

Lucifer: “I just… want to create a world full of gentle light! A fair world… where everyone is equal!”

Lucifer: light bringer, morning star, the first-born King of Gehenna, a born leader. All these are traits Lucifer possesses, yet these cannot erase what he is. He isn’t just any Demon, but a Demon King. He’s got a great intellect, but intelligence alone means nothing when you’re trying to appeal to emotions and morality gets in the way.

In this new chapter we see that Satan’s physical body has deteriorated to the point where the only real, functioning part of his brain is his Reptilian Complex. This is where all the survival knowledge and instincts he learned during his first few days on Assiah with a physical body of his own are keeping him moving. Looking back to that time, we realize why he’s acting the way he is.

He was restrained, drugged and surrounded by dudes in lab coats. He couldn’t communicate, couldn’t understand much either and it must’ve been incredibly overwhelming for him. Desperate to escape this new world, he goes off and searches for the one thing he knows, the one he can feel safe with. He goes and searches for Yuri.

Because even though Satan had never possessed a physical body, meaning he never really had had an ego before, (as Mephisto points out in chapter 100 and again in chapter 104), he’s still conscious of the one constant thing he’s had during his curious tiptoeing through Assiah.

Mephisto: “Satan didn’t have an ego yet. So I don’t know if he knew he was playing or not. But this was probably his first intelligent interaction.”

And then, fast forward to when Satan is forced to use this messily crafted ego, past his basic demonic instincts into more human survivalist desperation, we see him running back to the one person he feels safe with. None of his senses work anymore, including his sight, and when he encounters the first ‘familiar’ living thing, he curls up onto it and calls out the one name he’d never forget other than his own.

Satan: “Yuri’ Where is she? Yuri!”

Lucifer: “You poor thing. I suppose you can’t hear or see.”

Lucifer foolishly thinks he knows how Satan feels at that moment. He thinks he understands the pain, the suffering of Satan’s ego, yet Lucifer has never had that one person to keep his heart safe. He’s only been surrounded by humans, the people that agree to share their humanity with him, without the personal compromise of the deep connection Yuri shared with Satan.

So, no, he doesn’t understand. And he foolishly thinks he can break Satan out of his ‘nonsensical, agonizing babbling’ with a simple attack, meant to emulate a slap to the face. All because he’s desperate to have someone, anyone, that can relate to him. He needs someone, something, as to not feel so alone. Humans and Demons share a lot of primal conducts here, and the need to feel and be felt is no exception.

Satan feels this too, and he pleads and cries out to Yuri to please just stay with him. He doesn’t want her to leave, she promised she would stay with him! He tells her that he needs her, anything to have her stay, even if he doesn’t truly understand what he’s saying. And right when he’s about to make the most outrageous claim to anyone listening, Lucifer snaps.

Because, how?! How can Satan dare say he loves one of the creatures responsible for his pain? Clearly, he’s not thinking straight. Clearly, Satan’s first physical visit to Assiah is coming to an end, and Lucifer can’t have him taking these thoughts back to Gehenna. He needs Satan to realize just how awful, plain out sadistic humans really are, how they seem to enjoy their suffering.

Satan’s last moments are spent in a frenzy. His whole world, everything he believed in, has turned against him. Nothing maters anymore other than stopping this pain, stopping everything.

And so, the Blue Night began.
