The affection stat (later merged with the friendship stat) allows a pokemon to use the real superpower of friendship to hold onto the magic pixel.

Pikachu being cheered on by all his homies from every region (and even dimension) gave him the strength to tough it out!

That's what I think anyway, this is a dramatization of the friendship perk.
