Pomsky

The Pomsky is an (almost) irresistible mixture of two breeds: it is a combination of the "Pomeranian", in German "Zwergspitz", with the Siberian Husky. The aim of this hybrid breed is to perfect the beauty of the husky with the clinging character of the pomeranian and its small size. But like all "Designer Dogs", the Pomsky has many surprises in store.

 Appearance

Mini husky with a lot of fur

The Pomsky ideally looks like a long-haired miniature husky. The puppies in particular impress with this look. But in mixed breeds it is not possible to predict which breed will appear and how. As a result, adult Pomskys sometimes differ greatly - there is no standard. The four-legged friends often have around 30 cm shoulder height, but the range is very wide. Because husky males can be up to 60 cm tall, whereas dwarf peaks are around 20 cm small. So there are small or medium-sized Pomsky dogs. The weight can vary between 4 and 14 kilograms. The fur is very dense and of different lengths. It can be white, brown, black or gray. The husky’s bright blue eyes are especially popular in combination with the Pomeranian’s curled tail.

 History of the "mini husky"

Both the Pomeranian and the Siberian Husky belong to the FCI group 5, that is, to the "tops and dogs of the original type". The Zwergspitz is a mini version of the German Spitz, which originally comes from the Pomeranian region. It was only in the 1970s that more and more breeders in Germany concentrated on the Mini Spitz again. The breed has always been more popular in the United States and the United Kingdom. Here he is also known as the "King of Toys", which means "King of the Miniature Dogs". The Siberian Husky, along with the larger Alaskan Malamute, is one of the typical sled dogs in the north.

Only a few years ago, dog lovers have crossed the two breeds in a targeted manner to breed the Pomsky. The popularity of this hybrid breed has increased rapidly since 2016. The reason for this lies mainly in the Nordic ancestors: Huskies fascinate many people, but their attitude is very demanding. The four-legged friends have their own heads and also need a lot of exercise to be full. Even sporty dog owners quickly reach their limits. The combination with the pomeranian is said to combine the beauty of the husky with the adaptable nature of the little conspecific. But in the first generation, the properties of the dogs are not predictable. It is only from the second and third generation that the nature and appearance of the breed could emerge in a painstaking process of selection and with a great deal of knowledge. Unfortunately, only very few breeders put up with this effort. The Pomsky is therefore still a mixed breed, for which two - ideally - purebred parents of different breeds are required. This contradicts the definition of an independent race. Hybrid breeding is hardly known in Europe, but is already popular in the USA. Some dog lovers also call the Pomsky "Huskarian".

Pomsky character & education

While the pomeranian has a close bond with his caregiver, this is not the case with a husky. The sled dogs are used to working with different people. The properties of a Pomsky are unpredictable. The extent to which the Pomsky brings with it the hunting instinct and freedom of its big ancestors from the north is not foreseeable. Pomsky friends describe their four-legged friends as adaptable and people-oriented. But the combination of two different breeds does not automatically lead to the best possible result. That is why a Pomsky is often a surprise package. As a rule, Pomsky's fellows are positive, because both the Siberian Husky and the Pomeranian appreciate other dogs. They tend to hunt and bark and tend to be skeptical of young children. Attend a puppy school with your Pomsky puppy to promote socialization.

 health

First of all: Nature generally does not allow a "Pomsky". Even the pomeranian itself is difficult to breed and the breed is considered to be less robust. In addition, the size differences between the breeds are so large that mating would rarely work. Pomskys are therefore created through artificial insemination. The breeders use the seeds of dwarf peaks, the dam is always a Siberian Husky. Otherwise, a pomeranian would have to deliver puppies that would be too large for its small body.

employment Dwarf apex like to play with their owner - huskies prefer to do their own thing. If you get your Pomsky used to playing games together from a young age, you have a good chance of persuading him of the fun factor of playing in pairs in the long run. Try to find a job that you both enjoy. This could include agility for small dogs or practicing tricks. However, it is quite possible that the independent nature of the husky dominates and the four-legged friend only wants to practice when he feels like it. The Pomsky can be a great pleasure with outdoor activities and intelligence toys. Adult and medium-sized dogs are suitable as companions for small jogging rounds after appropriate training. Be careful not to overwhelm the Pomsky so that it stays fun.

Where can I find a pomsky?

The Pomsky is one of the so-called "designer dogs", that is, the targeted mating of two breeds. It is therefore not possible to purchase it from a breeder who belongs to one of the FCI-affiliated dog clubs. Many designer dog breeders benefit from the current hype about hybrid dogs. So they can sell four-legged friends for a lot of money without belonging to a club, health and essence test - after all, the mixes are trendy. Before you decide on a designer dog, we recommend that you take a look at the already recognized breeds. For example, the medium or small peak is an excellent alternative for everyone who succumbs to the charm of the miniature peak but wants a slightly larger dog. The size of the Norwegian Lundehund and the Shiba Inu are between Siberian Husky and Zwergspitz and bring the idiosyncratic charm of the breeds with them.

If it is to be a Pomsky, make sure that breeders only breed with parent animals that have a pedigree. They should also have successfully passed the health tests required by the breed. Get to know the puppies in their home and get an impression of the parents and the environment here. Minting and socialization in the first weeks of life are crucial for further dog life. Under no circumstances engage with dogs from dubious sources that are sold out of the trunk.

If you are looking for an adult Pomsky, you can search for hybrids in animal shelters. It is unlikely that a Spitz-Husky mongrel will be sitting around the corner at the shelter - it's not impossible. Other sled dog or spitz mixes are more common, but they can be just as charming as the others with the designer dog charm.

Whether designer dog, mixed breed from the animal shelter or Spitz from recognized breeding: We hope you enjoy your four-legged friend!
