Sorry! It’s an in-joke. I am the Snarp, but without the owl. One of the things I do when I write is joke around and write funny/unintentionally hilarious things inappropriately, because I have a chronic problem with writing things that are technically legible but no one will think are supposed to make any sense.

I mean, you’re not wrong, I just want to know more about the MLA Owl and what it has to do with fighter jets or the book “Translations of Animal Fear for Human Use 21”

The “MLA Owl” was a promotional costume from the “MLA Convention” from a webcomic I wrote in high school called “Snarp,” which you can read on my blog under the “Snarp” tag if you want. The owl was a drawing I did of the MLA Owl which got a lot of attention (this was before the Tumblr era)

Translation of Animal Fear for Human Use 21 is a book which didn’t actually exist but is mentioned in Snarp. It is mentioned because it is the title of the long-awaited sequel to Translation of Animal Fear for Human Use 19, whose title is also a joke. The joke is that both of the titles have no relation to the contents of the books they ostensibly describe. (The joke is here.)

@ot3 this is not actually much of a haunting to anyone whose visuaI memory works normally, but I am specifically being haunted by this jar of my grandmother's that lives on my dresser. I have been looking at it several times a day for years, and today my brain connected it to your tea set - the stripes-of-contrasting-patterns-with-occasional-floral-intrusions thing the tea set has going on feels extremely similar.

(When I first saw the tea set I was 100% convinced I'd seen it before, but couldn't figure out why - I think I'm just thinking of the jar? This would make more sense to me if they had the same manufacturer.)

SCP-701/The Hanged King's Tragedy is interesting to me in that it inspired a bunch of fanworks with a mythology that only makes sense if the gently-didactic premise of the original flew over your head. (To someone familiar with the genre conventions of stage tragedies, I think it's pretty clear what "Alagaddah" means, but the fan stuff sees that as a mystery to be solved.)

Thanks! You can use it as a blueprint or for inspiration. And you’re so right, maybe I should’ve included the word “assassin” but I was lazy :(

OK, I have a .zip with the book cover design in it now! I’m still planning to make some tweaks if I get time and it’s OK if you have any requests for changes after this, but I think you should have most of what you need.

Also, you can always make a cover without any of the text or illustration if you want, but I tried to make an image that looks somewhat interesting in this case, in case it’s useful for ideas.

As it is, it’s optimized for a book that’s about 250 dpi. I don’t know the exact details of how Lulu works, but I think there are some in the comments for this post:

You can save the image as a “webp” or “webp alpha” and it will be smaller (but not by a huge amount). This is what I did for the draft I made for myself, but I think that the file ends up pretty big even then, so feel free to ask me to convert it to a more optimized file format.

we had our own employee-run award called the Sward Award where you received the award for some reason, then later nominated and awarded an other staff member to pass the award along.

The award was an actual sword. it was some replica sword that was definitely sharp despite being advertised as not sharp/decorative. After being acquired by Verizon they made us get rid of it because we “can’t have weapons in the office”

duela dent is such a bizarre character because there's a clear aesthetic hook of "joker's daughter" but she has nothing to do with the joker, she's two-face's daughter. but a. when she was created two-face hadn't appeared in years, b. in the 50 years since she has never once interacted with her alleged father, c. her existence makes so little sense that the editor literally went "fuck you it's a comic" when people wrote in asking why she was older than robin when she was born years after him. and over time dressing up like the joker to join the teen titans has gone from random to morally deranged.

now she's a main character in a tv show along with harvey dent and there's literally no option for what to do with her that isn't stupid.

@jv Pinzelan or Unutterable by GGBotNet would probably be safe choices, as they're published under the SIL Open Font License and the designer is still active online, making it easier to clarify any potential issues.

(There's also Help Me!, but it's missing diacritics and stuff. Creepster, which I mentioned in another post, has the SIL license embedded, but its rightsholder situation seems to be kind of obscure - the Google Fonts profile appears to be attributing it to, like, a .torrent file.)
