the thing about israel and palestine is that only one side has the power to end the conflict. israel could end the occupation, end the blockade, stop the settlements, stop the apartheid, and let palestinians return to their stolen homes. an end to israeli violence--to israeli occupation of palestine--would mean an end to the conflict. an end to palestinian violence, on the other hand, would see the bombings and evictions and ethnic cleansing continue unabated. so when someone calls for "an end to violence on both sides" remember that only one side can end 'the violence'--all the other can do is roll over and die.

If it was just about Hamas, why are Palestinians in the West Bank, which isn’t controlled by Hamas, getting attacked?
If it was just about Hamas, why shut off water electricity and food that would harm the civilians the most?
If it was just about Hamas, why use white phosphorus and engage in chemical warfare?
If it was just about Hamas, why lie about babies being decapitated and produce AI generated images to try to prove that?
We need to start asking serious questions. Of course no one wants any civilian deaths but if you are constantly asking “okay but what about Hamas your supporting Hamas??” You have to see the large structural violence that is a daily reality for Palestinians and as I type this Gaza is being leveled.

For those unaware, NatGeo fell victim to a common thing we're seeing with publications of all types: Some company or hedge fund buys a publication with a good reputation, whether that's a local paper or a national magazine; they strip it for parts, cutting out all of the expensive people and/or infrastructure that allowed it to deserve that reputation; and then they hope no one notices.
This has happened a lot in the last 20 years or so and it's honestly a catastrophe for news media.
