aside from ppl laughing at the bart simpson comment, i keep getting comments/tags on this post that are interpreting this as me putting down the other protags i listed. im not, i love them all for different reasons. (except for baseball anime i cant get thru that one)
in this post im talking about why they are underdogs - most shounen anime protags start off not so good at whatever it is the story revolves around (to give them a growth arc and goal for the trajectory of the series), but are also p badass at one aspect of it (to make them cool to the middle schoolers reading). in sports anime this is often bc they just started the sport. in battle anime its often bc they have never had formal training/been taught the ways of whatever we will need exposition about. in any case, whatever obstacle or disadvantage they need to overcome sets them up as an underdog to root for - and the story will set up other rival characters and difficult situations that highlight the protags special qualities (eg. onoda’s hill climbing talent, hinatas jumping, dekus analytics) alongside their weaknesses.
however, naruto takes this one step further in my opinion by also making naruto super annoying and obnoxious and hated in-universe - a social underdog. we find out he is hated because of the fox demon rumors, but even without that we can believe it because of his shrill voice and dumb pranks and orangeness and farting. he is genuinely alone, and the bonds he scrapes together over the series feel super meaningful because of that - we dont just root for naruto because he gets more powerful/good at sport, naruto himself grows and changes into someone who can make strong bonds with other people. we feel proud of him for finally managing to break through and make those connections.
compare that to deku, for instance, who has an extremely similar plot. both boys start out super weak and show barely any skill in the most important role in their worlds society. both of them come upon a way to tap into a huge power that makes them unbelievably strong, but in the beginning they cant use it reliably, meaning they are forced to rely on creativity and their teammates. (they also both have a lazy sensei and a broody rival who gets super mad when they surpass them and have an examination arc that gets infiltrated by real villains anyway ill stop). however, deku actually makes friends very easily - even tho bakugo hates him for some reason that guy always seems like an overreacting outlier. after all, deku is just a sweet nerd.
naruto? is that class clown everyone laughs at and not with. naruto is that scruffy kid who nobody wants to be friends with and if teachers force you to be in his group people giggle and make fun of you, who graffitid the school on the weekend and is always getting suspended and all the moms whisper about how he’s going to end up in prison what a shame. you KNOW kids like naruto in real life, or maybe you were one. he’s not only a magical-powers-underdog, he is a legit social underdog.
people also bring up hinata as obnoxious, which i think people are trying to say makes him a legit social underdog too - but hinata’s obnoxiousness isnt received in the same way. hes the sporty boy in your class who isnt that great at studying and he needs to learn how to use his inside voice but hes still always in the middle of a gang of friends. he fits into the club super easily and never seems to have (non-comedic) trouble with the teachers. hes annoying the way a bumbly puppy is annoying - its still cute and he attracts people. the reason why hinata is annoying isnt ever explored, and is never part of his character growth. because hes short and he has to act larger than life to make up for it…? its never been expanded on in the series. whereas naruto is annoying specifically for the same reason the scruffy kids in real life are ‘annoying’ - terrible home life leading to destructive craving for attention.
thats what i mean by nuance.
