Star Trek: The Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton - Las Vegas, NV (1998)
“Star Trek: The Experience is an interactive adventure based on the fantastic voyages of the futuristic TV series Star Trek. Visitors to this joint venture between Paramount Parks and the Las Vegas Hilton are “immersed in a futuristic world where they see, feel, touch and live in the 24th century”.
A visit to the 65,000 sq. ft. entertainment attraction starts with a visit to the SpaceQuest casino. A giant portal, at the end of the themed casino, opens onto a view of models of the USS Enterprise, Bird of Prey and the USS Enterprise 1-701-D—suspended from the ceiling against a deep sky wall filled with thousands of flickering stars. A ramp leads to the ticket sales booth and the adventure truly begins. Soon, the guests are “beamed” aboard the Starship Enterprise. On the bridge of the airship, an exact recreation of the TV set familiar to millions, guests become part of a Star Trek adventure and “the future of the universe lies in their hands.” After a dramatic ride on the Turbo Lift to the Grand Corridor (never actually shown in the TV series) , the space travelers are escorted to the shuttle craft bay where they board a 27-seat shuttlecraft for “the ultimate journey through Star Trek universe.“
The motion simulator ride has been developed using a new “immersive” viewer tilt perspective and the riders are completely out of touch with the “real world.” Film images are seen overhead and on either side of the shuttle craft as well as up front. The six axis simulator in the domed theater “creates an incredibly realistic and convincing journey” Visitors, after the ride, disembark into a full scale reproduction of the Promenade from Star Trek- Deep Space Nine which houses assorted retail shops.
Other areas in Star Trek: The Experience include the History of the Future which is a museum-like exhibit that features authentic Star Trek costumes, weaponry, make-up, special effects, and props used in the series and in the eight motion pictures that were made. There is also a photo-morphing studio where guests can be photographed as their favorite character. In Quark’s Restaurant & Bar visitors can enjoy exotic named drinks and foods all based on the specific Star Trek “language” and “culture.” The 22-minute experience is a rich and entertaining one. Costumed “characters” help to move the more than 2000 space travelers through the entire space in an hour. The experience includes one bridge, two loading docks, and two motion simulation rides.”

“It was like joy was tangible, and you could wrap yourself up in it like a blanket. And I have never been so content.”
Guinan speaking of the nexus is how I describe The Experience.
I went in the summer of 1998, and I could have stayed there forever.
It was like being engulfed in Star Trek. It surrounded you in every way. You couldn’t look anywhere without it being there. Trek music on a constant loop. Video on big screens. The walls, the floor, the ceilings were Trek. Giant starship above you against a glittering star field. Klingons and Ferengi about. Everything themed.
It was a moment in time you could live in, and I wish everyone could have experienced it.
