A fresh-air school for workers’ children in the munitions township of Gretna Green (Scotland, 1914 – 18).
The government provided some funds towards the cost of day nurseries for munitions workers, and by 1917 there were over 100 in Britain. But nothing was done for mothers in other forms of employment, who had to rely on friends and family.
