I cannot stress enough how excellent the opening scenes of FNL are. You figure of what kind of town this is as well as how much pressure Eric is under

you figure out the characters’ home lives

Tim with the beer

and the fact that his older brother is the authority figure

Matt taking care of his grandmother

who loves him dearly

you figure out the class differences going from Matt’s house or Tim’s house

to Lyla’s house

and the fact that she’s in a two-parent home

and the transition of her as a cheerleader

to Jason, the golden boy, who isn’t even at home — we’re introduced to him in his uniform, getting interviewed because this is what his life is supposed to be —

is so organic because her little brother just made a crack about her making out with him and of course the cheerleader and the quarterback are going out like they’re Barbie and Ken.

And Smash who is arguably as talented in his position is also first seen in his uniform, getting interviewed and his demeanour, his swag, is very different, once again showing the kind of character he is

we even figure out how Tyra is perceived and again transitioning from this scene to Lyla at home with her parents and her rice krispie squares is fantastic

how Landry thinks of himself

we get sociopolitical tensions

personal tensions

hierarchies

and it’s under 7 minutes. And by the end of the episode all of the tropes we’re introduced to are subverted.

Fucking. Excellent.

Honestly the best piece of advice I can give to younger girls trying to figure life out is to completely ignore men. I’m not being quirky or cute when I say that, I mean it seriously. Ignore men’s judgments of you, ignore their insincere compliments, ignore their half-assed romance. Focus on developing yourself. Practice your art, play sports, do theater, volunteer, spend time with your friends, but do not put substantial effort into pleasing men. They’ll be there for you to pursue when the time comes and if you want to. But nothing will waste your youth more than fighting for male acceptance.

If trust is a gift, I hope you’ve got the receipt. In fact - I hope it’s a puzzle with three of the pieces missing. I hope it’s a pair of stillettos with no grip that you wear every morning it’s icy out. I hope it’s the food you hate; the song that makes you mad; and a photo just before you sneeze. If trust is a gift I hope it’s all of your hopes and dreams made entirely of sand; so you can watch as they cascade to the floor through your fingers. I hope it’s the book that could save your life; with all of the pages stuck together. I hope it’s ten pounds short for the rent, and torrential rain every year on your birthday. I hope it’s your car breaking down half-way down the M40 during rush hour and you don’t have time to pull onto the hard shoulder. If trust is a gift I hope it’s second-hand and it smells funny. I hope it’s almost what you wanted but not what you needed. If trust is a gift I hope it brings you back to my front door so you can knock until your knuckles bleed and your wrists are weak. If trust is a gift I hope you can’t take it out of the box without a gut-renching guilt. If trust is a gift I hope it’s got a gift tag saying, ‘THIS ONE’S FROM ME’.
