10 LGBT+ rock stars that aren't Freddie Mercury, David Bowie, or Elton John
Pete Townshend
Pete is best known as the tall, short tempered energetic guitarist and writer of almost all of the songs by The Who. He was the member who came up with their trademark move of smashing the instruments at the end of each show, and became a voice for youth at the time with one of their many hits 'Talkin 'Bout My Generation.' He came out in his memoir as well as an interview in 1989, saying he was bisexual, and also said he identified as both a woman and a man, saying: "I know how if feels to be a woman because I am a woman, and I won't be classified as just a man."
Debbie Harry
Lead singer and writer for the band Blondie, she's a bisexual woman well known for her colourful taste in fashion and unmistakable voice. Her musical career started out in the punk genre but she is best known for writing and singing some of the most popular new wave songs including Heart of Glass, Call Me, and One Way or Another.
Janis Joplin
Often cited as the face of American blues, folk, soul and rock, Janis Joplin is WLW and had numerous relationships with men and women in her life. She was famed for her distinctive husky voice and powerful and captivating stage presence that left audiences stunned.
Dave Davies
The guitarist in 60s British invasion group The Kinks revealed he was bisexual in his autobiography in 1997. The more outgoing of the Davies brothers in the band, of which he had a difficult and fiery relationship with, Dave also experimented with makeup and women's clothing in the 60s and 70s. Many people claim his riffs were the very earliest beginnings of heavy metal.
Sir Ray Davies
Ray Davies wrote and sung most of The Kink's songs, including their most successful song Lola, which is about a transgender woman. Although quieter and more laid back than his brother, he does not have a quiet tongue either. His endless brotherly quarrels with Dave continue to this day, although they live next door to one another. He labels himself as bisexual.
Kim Deal
As well as playing Bass for the late 80s indie rock band The Pixies and fronting the 90s band The Breeders, Kim Deal has studied and worked in cellular biology. She has said that she is asexual and also identifies as a feminist. Kim Deal has a unique philosophy in recording music, as she uses no modern means of production such as digital recording, computers, and auto tuning.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe
Recognised as the inventor of rock and roll, Tharpe was a pioneer for combining blues and gospel to create a unique sound partnered with her electric guitar as early as the late 30s. She is WLW. Her relationship with Marie Knight became a controversial topic when it was discovered by the public, especially from her religious background.
Rob Halford
Singer and songwriter of the popular heavy metal band Judas Priest, Rob was initially uneasy about coming out as gay due to heavy metal's often homophobic following, but was surprised when he was overwhelmingly supported. He now calls himself the 'stately homo of heavy metal' and speaks openly about the ongoing struggles that LGBT+ people face.
Marc Boland
In 1971, a tiny 5"4 Marc Boland performed in his band T-Rex on Top Of The Pops wearing glitter under his eyes. This is widely recognised as the starting point of the glam rock movement. He had relationships with men and women in his life, and close friends have described him as being bisexual. He was proudly Jewish and he became a style icon of the 70s for his corkscrew hair, colourful fashion and whimsical happy-go-lucky attitude.
Lou Reed
Lou Reed's infamously dry humour and deadpan voice set him apart from other rock stars of his time. As a child his parents put him in a mental hospital and he was given electric shock therapy to try and 'cure' his interest in men. He grew in popularity in the 60s as The Velvet Underground's lead singer and guitarist and went on to have a successful solo career, where he frequently wrote and sung about LGBT people. Reed is MLM and also Jewish!
“without the police there would be mayhem”
Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) was watching educational documentaries last night
No??? You can donate food that is given to people who want it. I haven’t heard of them being low on supplies. There has also been some food vendors there. But why would they be low on food ?? They are still in a city and people can come and go.
There’s been a widespread effort to start several lies about the CHAZ, including food scarcity and supposed chaos, but everyone I know locally who is there has said it’s all well supplied, calmly run, and feeling wonderfully supportive and communal.
Yeeeaaah, the Seattle Police Department has been running a constant disinformation campaign since we didn’t torch the police district like they wanted. They have been poking the bees nest that knows not to sting back and they are furious. So here’s some accurate first-hand information:
-The Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone is only in name. The people inside do not want to secede from the US, only make it and the city of Seattle better. This zone is just a project to show what life would look like if we didn’t live in constant fear of police making us criminals to inflate their budget and private prisons
-Local businesses are not being extorted like the SPD claims
-IDs are not checked at the border. I mean, what database are people supposed to check IDs through if they were?
-There are no warlords. The pictures of protesters with AR-15s you are seeing are after the people banded together when they heard there were heavily-armed white supremacists and neo-nazis marching up to face them (hoax broadcasted on the SPD scanners since they knew protesters were listening in and wanted to cause chaos)
-You may have heard of someone declaring himself the king of the area. There was someone that attacked a white artist for spraying over a black artist’s work and made those threats in the moment. The attacker has apologized to the white artist since. He is not recognized as the leader by anyone in the area since there is no leader
-SPD says they were ran out of their precinct. In reality, they emptied the building and left it before walking away, leaving the protesters to just… have it
-There’s no border. People can come and go as they please. The only barricades are to protect people inside since a police officer’s brother drove in the middle of the crowd and started shooting protesters a few nights prior
-There’s a QFC two blocks in one direction and a Safeway in the other direction. Since everyone can come and go as they please, there’s no sense to run out of food or any supplies
-Restaurants and residents are happy to see so much foot traffic! Business’s doors are open for people to use their bathrooms. Some are even offering free menu items! And it’s a lot better than the constant gunfire and teargassing the police offered. There was so much teargas the previous night (after the mayor promised a 30 day ban on teargas) it got into entire buildings’ AC systems, gassing everyone inside
-We are still paying sales and property taxes since we are still a part of the city and the state and don’t plan to secede. The threat to power and water is foolish unless the SPD want to be extra cruel
-There are plenty of water and medical supplies. Everyone from different parts of the city and the greater Seattle area are coming together to volunteer their time
-Just imagine a regular street fair or music festival where people hold public round table discussions on how to improve the city and fight racial injustice
-Most nights, the people in there watch educational documentaries on the struggles of black lives in America
-And tonight we played dodge ball
Take Away: We are proving that the police as they are now, do more harm to American communities than good. Abolish the police and restructure the city/state budget to improve communities. Put health and growth of citizens first. National news (especially conservative outlets) are lying to you. They are reporting only what the police are saying. The police are lying because we are threatening their paychecks and their military toys.

needing native representation in media, education and government are not decoy issues, the commercialization and appropriation of native cultures are not decoy issues, the lack of native representation is institutional oppression at work

why you should keep writing your story
- because it’s a puzzle no one else will ever arrange the same way as you.
- because there are ideas that simply won’t come to you until you write down the wrong words.
- because all the bad scenes are the bones of the wonderful scenes.
- because someone will love it: someone will read it once, and twice, and thrice; someone will ramble to you about the complexity of it; someone will doodle your characters out of love; someone will find it in exactly what they were looking for with or without knowing it.
- because they have things to say, your characters. they’ve told you all those secrets and they have more to tell you, if you will listen.
- because you love it even when you don’t; even when it drives you mad or when it accidentally turns into apathy; even when you think you’re doing it all wrong; you love it, and it loves you back.
- because you can get a treasure even from things that go wrong; because if a story crumbles down you can build a shinier one on the same spot; because you won’t know where it will take you until it takes you there.
Someone pointed out that the font on the government's letter about the quarantine looked familiar, and now I can't stop thinking about it.
If I may add, from a viral Facebook post:
imagine trump just dying from covid-19. imagine trump dying alone in a hospital bed and going to hell. Imagine trump and pence burning forever in Hell for murdering 80,000 people in just a month and a half. That’s seeming more and more likely as time goes on here.

I’m kind of disappointed that so much Firelord!Zuko content seems to be about how he’s on the verge of falling apart, and how the nation doesn’t respect him and his ministers won’t cooperate with him, and he’s separated from the gaang
And that’s not untrue. Zuko has to run a government that was, a few months ago, ready and willing to burn the rest of the world to ash, and that’s a serious burden to bear, but it’s not hopeless. This is a new time of peace. A new dawn. Where are all my pieces that focus on peace and growth? About Zuko fostering friendly alliances? About Zuko leading by example?
A servant accidentally drops a serving platter of roast duck during a ball. The juice splatters a noble woman’s gown. She backhands the servant across the face and her husband is calling for punishment and people are watching as though it’s some kind of show, because this is the way it is in the palace. Until, that is, the Firelord steps forward and helps the servant to his feet. Zuko asks the shaking man if he is alright. He calls for another servant to help clean up the mess. He tells the noblewoman in a tight voice that she, nor anyone else in these walls, will not raise a violent hand to anyone under his care
Zuko is walking through a city courtyard as he speaks with the Mayor when a young child waddles up and tugs at Zuko’s golden-hemmed robes, curious at the way they catch the light. The guards rush forward and the boy’s parents fall over themselves to offer apologies and beg for forgiveness, and Zuko bends down and picks the child up under the arms, and settles him on his hip. The child reaches for his gold crown settled in his topknot and Zuko laughs and gently pushes his hands away. He gives the boy back to his parents, and says, “There’s no need to apologise. Curiosity is a valuable trait in a young boy. You should encourage his curiosity for life.” And then he sweeps away with the Mayor in tow, as though nothing is amiss, as though his gentle smile and understanding words didn’t rattle these two townspeople more than a reprimand every would
Zuko shifting the nation’s priority away from militarisation, while trying to create new jobs for displaced people, jobs that will help his nation recover. Zuko implementing a new curriculum in schools. Zuko consulting with all kinds of people, like Iroh and Aang, yes, but also other nobles, and common people, and foreign dignitaries, and historical and cultural experts. Zuko bringing culture back to the Fire Nation.
Zuko struggling with his famous temper, but working every single day to be the kind of leader his people can put their trust in. A Firelord that doesn’t strike fear into his people, the people he’s dedicated to protecting. A Firelord that’s very different to his forefathers, who decimated entire cultures, who burned the faces of their sons and cast them out for speaking out of turn.
Zuko being kind and patient. Zuko working hard but slowly, over time, earning the trust and love of his people.
Now with complete fic! On AO3:
I finally tracked down a fun snippet I read a while back, where an assassin tries to get close enough to poison Zuko by disguising themselves as a servant, and this plan immediately fails because Zuko knows all his servants by name.
oh my GOD these just made my entire day. So wholesome
