The Reddit Blackout, #196, And Being New to Tumblr

okay i’ve seen a lot of people in the past ~24 hours or so confused by everything going on with Reddit & Tumblr from both sides - people new to tumblr who don’t know how to use it, and tumblr users who don’t know what’s going on with reddit and why many of its users have joined up here i know this isn’t really related to my blog but fun fact about me: i was up until recently a very active reddit user and even mod a subreddit, but I’ve also been on tumblr for about 3 years now on different accounts, so I think I can see pretty well from both sides of this and explain what’s going on this post will be split in 2 sections: what happened with reddit (and what #196 means), and a guide for new users

1. What The Hell Is Going On With Reddit?

The thing that’s caused all this ruckus is a major change to Reddit’s API, which is what Reddit provides to people so they can pull directly from Reddit to make third-party apps or tools.

The change is that Reddit is changing its previously free API to be paid. Which on its own kinda sucks for developers, but it’s not unexpected. They need to make money somehow, right?

The problem is that the API pricing is WAY TOO FUCKING EXPENSIVE. The developer of the most popular 3rd party Reddit app, Apollo, says it will cost him $20 million a year to continue running the app as normal.

Essentially, this pricing forces almost everything third-party to shut down, which causes 3 major problems:

So you see why this change is bad.

Reddit users were PISSED.

So over the past week and a half or so, they have been working on organizing a site-wide blackout. The majority of the most active subreddits have now gone private. Some are only doing it for 48 hours, others (such as r/196) are doing it indefinitely.

That’s why you can’t access most of Reddit right now, and that’s why many users have come here.

You’re probably still wondering, though - what is this #196?

Well, as you may guess, it’s connected to that subreddit r/196 I just mentioned. r/196 is a subreddit which only has one rule: every time you visit, you must post before you leave.

That’s it, that’s the subreddit.

The thing about r/196 that set it apart from most other subreddits - and what lends the subreddit’s users perfectly to Tumblr - is that it was dominated by queer and leftist users.

So now they’ve come here and set up shop in #196 and r/196 so they can continue their merry little shitposting.

There’s a ton of lore related to r/196, actually, but this is already a long tumblr post and quite frankly I cannot be bothered to write about it at the moment.

2. I’m Here From Reddit, What Now?

Hello there, random new user. As a double-citizen of Reddit and Tumblr, let me show you around this place.

So. Shoutout to my Great Aunt Mildred, because she got there before I did.

Further shoutout to my second cousin Jared, who thought he was the first in even the extended family until he turned up for Granny’s 90th birthday, saw me for the first time in probably fifteen years, and heard me utter the words, “My wife…”

i was talking with a friend in her mid 20s on discord about this and i realized it might be worth saying out loud but as an older transfem one of the biggest societal changes i have seen in my lifetime has been not necessarily the lessening of socially acceptable homophobia and transphobia but the increase of love for us

like in some ways there is less transphobia and homophobia sure, but in other ways there's more and i sorta see it as a conservation of energy type deal like less ppl have that kind of hate in them but the people who do have more of it

they still kill us when we're vulnerable obvs but now we don't let comedians make jokes about our deaths without pushback and social cost

I'm going to talk about being transfem and butch.

I get misgendered in public a lot. Never cruelly. Just a lot. Which makes sense.

I'm 190lbs of muscle with a deep voice. Which I enjoy. Typically I'm wearing leather and jeans. The vast majority of people are going to gender me as male because my gender presentation is inherently masculine, and other parts of me are also masculine.

This is a problem that cis butches face regularly, and that fact helps me cope with constantly being read as male. But it aches the most when I see other lesbians/queer women.

I don't really get to be 'publicly' lesbian. If I see another dyke on the street, I'm just a man. There's no quiet solidarity there. There's no recognition.

Femmes don't preen under my gaze at a bar. Instead, I have to walk up and explain my whole situation and hope that they're cool. Which is rough, because sometimes they're not. Or, worse, they say they are, but they aren't. Which results in a lot of wasted time for everybody.

It takes a supreme amount of self-confidence to walk up to a cute girl and boldly declare yourself also a girl in a voice that immediately gives some kind of lie to what you're saying.

So, baseline, I'm pushing and establishing boundaries. I'm already testing her just by talking to her. Which makes flirting hard, you see? If I feel like I'm already toeing a line, then I'm not going to make a sly comment about her dress. I am, instead, going to be as non-threatening as possible.

This is a great way to make new friends and acquaintances (I have a lot), but a terrible way to get laid.

So, my point is that if you meet a transbutch girl understand that she's already putting up a LOT of work just be here. So, you know, maybe touch my her arm and give me her a compliment if you're interested.

A lot of people relate to what I've said here, which is great. But a lot of people also don't understand what a butch is. I'm not gonna explain that, but I am gonna explain some more about myself.

I enjoy being masculine.

I enjoy having a deep voice. I enjoy dressing in leather and jeans. I enjoy being muscular. And, while I do feel isolated, that's just a result of my condition. Which I accept.

I'm not repressing myself. I'm not 'boymoding.' And, most importantly,

I do not want to pass.

I do not want to look like a cisgirl. I do not want be mistaken for a cisgirl. I don't want to read as feminine. I'm a trans dyke and I'm quite pleased with that.

I'm glad everyone relates and supports, but I think a lot of you are getting the wrong message.

I once stayed at a game reserve in South Africa, and they had three cheetahs – two males and one female. The boys stuck together (they were brothers), but female cheetahs are solitary, save for when they are raising cubs. Which is hard work for cheetahs, because they don’t/can’t den, she’s working constantly to protect/move her cubs, as well as feeding both them and herself.

Now, these cheetahs ARE in a private reserve, but they’re still essentially wild. But they are more or less accustomed to the presence of people. And this cheetah, Ketswiri, got very badly injured in her leg one time, which usually would be fatal to a cheetah. The staff at the reserve helped her. Another time, she was starving, and they provided her a fresh antelope carcass. And she remembered this, because the science officer was telling us how one time he was watching Ketswiri and her cubs, and she wandered over and dumped all her cubs at his feet, and walked off. Like “watch my kids, I need some me time.” And he was panicking like COME BACK I CAN’T BABYSIT YOUR KIDS WTF

it’s so funny though because domesticated cats are aggressively social in raising their young so basically op’s cat was like bitch these are your kids too, where tf you think you’re going???

As a person with cats who has given birth, they are also this way about *your* kids. My cat spent my whole pregnancy snuggled up to me, and then as soon as my daughter was born, he was always where she was. He was super protective of her when new people came over. Whenever we had to take her out for a doctor’s appointment, he waited by the door and sniffed her carseat when we brought her back. Cats are intensely social and it’s so wonderful 🥰
