Roses make nice gifts

By- enochiancat

Castiel walked up the stone pathway, hands fidgeting with nervousness. He stopped at the doorway looking around. He saw a rosebush and knelt down picking a single rose off the bush. Cas winced, pricking his finger on a thorn. He examined his finger as blood started to well up. He quickly wiped the blood on the inside of his jacket and picked up the rose. After straightening his tie he held the rose behind his back and reached to knock on the door, hesitating a moment before rapping on the oak. Cas could hear footsteps approach and felt doubt flicker in his stomach, wondering if he made the right choice to come. The door opened and once he saw those green eyes all the doubt and apprehension left and something else filled him up. “Cas…” said that familiar deep voice. “D-Dean..” Cas smiled trying not to look too nervous. “I, I um- hi..” “Hi, is something wrong?” Dean asked looking confused. He stepped aside gesturing for Cas to come in. “Oh… No nothing’s wrong I um just came here to talk to you.” He stepped past the threshold into the hallway that led to the kitchen and living room. “Make yourself at home.” Dean said walking to the fridge to grab a beer, he looked to Cas offering him one but Cas shook his head and sat down on the couch. Dean looked at Cas’ hand and saw blood. “What happened?” Cas looked at his finger, forgetting for a moment how had pricked it. “O-oh it’s nothing.” He stuffed that hand behind his back where the other was holding the rose. Dean was eyeing him. “Whatcha got there?” He asked. Looking thoughtfully at Cas. “Oh, um…” Cas looked around debating whether to give the rose to Dean or not. He decided, “D-Dean I got you a, a rose.” He smiled sheepishly and looked down pulling the rose from behind his back, daring a glance up at Dean to see him smiling, eyes shining. Dean came and sat next to Cas taking the rose from his hand. “It’s beautiful Cas.” He looked at Cas and smiled as Cas looked up again, shy and suddenly quiet. “I like it.” He reached over and grabbed Cas’ hand. Cas looked up a little shocked. “So you wanted to come talk to me huh?” “Uh yea..” Cas said, staring at their hands intertwined. “Look, I’m just gonna be honest here. I can’t stop thinking about you and I just, I don’t know..” He looked away. Dean grinned grabbing Cas’ chin to turn his face towards him. Cas averted Deans gaze. “Yea?” Cas looked up at him. “Me too.” He grinned and leaned towards Cas brushing his lips against Cas’, smiling against his before pressing down and closing his eyes. Cas’ eyes widened but then he leaned into it closing his eyes too. Dean pulled away looking into Cas’ blue eyes, lost in his gaze. Cas grinned and leaned towards him again.

The Lion and the Badger

by~ enochiancat

Dean walked into the Gryffindor common room, robes fluttering behind him. A couple of first years ran by him shouting and laughing, probably off to start a game of Exploding Snap. He smiled to himself thinking back to when he was a first year, back to the Sorting where he was put into the Gryffindor house. He thought of Sammy, his brother, being put into Ravenclaw just last year. Dean was sad that he wouldn’t be able to look after his little brother as much but was proud of Sam for getting into the Ravenclaw house, he wasn’t surprised at all though, Sam was very smart and thoughtful. But his favorite memory of Hogwarts was during his first year when, as the Sorting went on, he caught sight of one of the most beautiful people he ever laid eyes on…

“Novak, Castiel!” Cried Professor Mcgonagall.

The dark haired boy walked up to the Sorting Hat, nervousness showed in every movement he made. He looked around with those gorgeous blue eyes until they rested on Dean’s, where he now sat at the Gryffindor table. Dean’s breath caught in his throat at the sudden eye contact. He quickly looked away his face turning a deep shade of pink. As he was self-consciously playing with a nick in the wood table the Sorting Hat shrieked,

“HUFFLEPUFF!”

Dean looked up at Castiel as he set the hat back down onto the stool and made his way to the cheering Hufflepuff table. As Castiel was walking away he turned back at Dean and smiled. Just barely. Dean thought he may have imagined it. Disappointment welled in his stomach, he wanted those bright blue eyes to be in Gryffindor, he wanted to know more about this Castiel Novak…

4 years later, in his 5th year now, Dean smiled at the thought. Throughout the years him and Castiel had very few classes together to much of Dean’s disappointment. In the classes they did have together they hardly ever had the chance to even look at each other. Hogwarts has been extremely vigilant in the teaching of students, especially cause of the incident with The Dark Lord a few years back. So many tests and exams had been put upon the students and the O.W.L’s have been exceptionally difficult from what Dean had heard from the 6th and 7th years. He felt dizzy at the thought of what the N.E.W.T’s would be like next year having not even done the O.W.Ls yet.

It seemed though that Castiel had showed an interest in him, he would stop Dean in the corridors in between classes to talk but most times when he wasn’t stammering or babbling he would just stare and smile sheepishly as if he didn’t know what to say before apologizing and quickly walking off, ears tinged a shade of red. Dean would always stare after him, kicking himself for not saying anything. There were many encounters like this until one day in his 4th year Dean had to go to the library to work on his Charms homework, he was having trouble working it out and was on the verge of giving up until a familiar face turned up in the library, blue eyes finding his green ones. Castiel was panting slightly as though he had just been running.

“Dean! There you are, I was looking for you and your friend Benny said you had come to the library.” He said still slightly breathless as he sat himself across from Dean.

“You were looking for me?” Dean asked, eyes wide, still baffled at Castiel’s sudden appearance. “W-why?” He scratched the back of his head self-consciously.

“Oh…um.. Well..” It was Castiel’s turn to look embarrassed. “Honestly I don’t know..” He looked at Dean sheepishly. Dean tried to refrain from getting lost in the ocean of those blue eyes. Castiel suddenly looked away and down at Dean’s Charms homework. “Hey isn’t that due tomorrow?” He asked looking up at Dean.

“um, yeah..” Dean chuckled to himself. “I’m having a hard time with it..”

Castiel’s eyes brightened. “I can help! I got it done ages ago!” His eyebrows knitted together as he realized how eager he sounded, “I mean.. If you want.” He added hastily.

Dean looked up and smiled, “Really? That would be great! I would ask Benny to help but he’s as helpful as a mountain troll…” Castiel laughed. And that’s how they finally started talking…meeting each other in the library.. Sneaking glances at each other in class and in the corridor.

Dean knew everything about Castiel as there was to know, his favorite food (peanut butter and jelly), his favorite animal (cats and bees) and stuff that Castiel hadn’t even told his brothers, Michael and Gabriel, but they were still just friends. They still talked in their 5th year but now it seemed like they were inseparable, constantly hanging out in the library or on the grounds with each other. Talking about anything and everything. Getting in trouble for chattering in class. Dean was always disappointed when he had to go to his own common room, unable to talk to Castiel any longer.

Dean woke up Saturday morning, feeling elated when he looked out the window to see blue skies and sunshine. Perfect. He quickly threw on some presentable robes and rushed down to breakfast, eager to find Castiel. Dean decided that today was the day. He had to confess his feelings for Cas. He had already tried to quench the love blazing in his heart and burning in his stomach but it was no use. He couldn’t help falling for those blue eyes and perfect smile and nervous laugh…

Everyone had eaten breakfast and now many students were getting ready to go to Hogsmeade. He had to find Castiel. Now. After thoroughly searching he finally found him.

“Cas! Castiel!” Dean called. Castiel whipped around, meeting Dean’s eyes with relief. After a few moments of struggling to get through the crowd he came face to face with Dean.

“Dean! Thank god, I was looking for you!” He let out a breath of relief. “Follow me, I’ve got something to tell you..” He grabbed Dean’s wrist and Dean followed dumbfounded.

“I was looking for you too Cas..” Dean said finally coming his senses. “We have to talk.”

“Okay, this is a quiet place.” Cas said, they were on the grounds under an ancient willow tree. “I hope you don’t mind missing the Hogsmeade trip..”

“Oh.. No it’s okay.. I was planning on pulling you away from it too anyway..” Dean looked up at Cas, his arm still tingled where he had grabbed it. “What did you want to tell me?” He looked deep into those blue eyes, he thought he might drown in them. There was a sudden crack that crashed through Deans thoughts. A branch of the willow tree had begun to fall.

Deans wand was out in matter of seconds “Wingardium leviosa!” The branch hovered just above Castiel’s head before Dean guided to the ground. Dean had never seen Castiel’s eyes so wide.

“Thanks!” Cas said after recovering from the slight shock. “Nice reflexes, I don’t even want to think of how long j would have had to stay in the hospital wing of that had hit me.”

“It was nothing really, anyone could have done the same thing.” Dean was being modest. He then remembered why they were under the tree in the first place. “You wanted to tell me something?”

“Well..” Cas looked around, searching for the right words to say. Dean was hoping that Castiel would confess already.. If Cas wasn’t going to then he would, they already knew their feelings for each other, they just had to get it out. “Dean,” Cas looked up into Dean’s green eyes. “Dean, I-I don’t really know how to word this” He looked away. “Oh god, I had this all rehearsed in my head, I hope I’m not embarrassing myself.” mumbled Cas to himself. “I feel like we share a… bond I guess, I don’t know how else to put it it really.” He struggled to find the right words. “A more profou-”

“I love you.” Burst Dean, not necessarily knowing what he was doing. Cas stared at him, eyes wide, mouth agape, but then he smiled and his eyes softened.

“I guess I couldn’t have worded it better..” Castiel grinned as Dean blushed.

“W-Well I do.. I’m not gonna lie, that’s what I wanted to tell you,” he looked up at Cas, grinning himself, “I love you, and that’s that..” Dean said, talking almost sternly like that’s how it was going be and Cas would deal with it whether he liked it or not. He then leaned forward until their faces were only centimeters apart. Smiling he grabbed Castiel’s chin and kissed him. Cas’ lips were soft against his as he cupped his face in his hands. After a few moments, that actually felt like years maybe even lifetimes, they broke apart. Both smiling themselves stupid.

“Well.. Want to go see if we can still get into Hogsmeade and grab us a butterbeer or two?” Dean asked grabbing Castiel’s hand.

“I would like that… A lot.” Replied Cas, happiness sparkling in his eyes.

Cas had helped him multiple times after that in Charms, Potions, and Defense Against the Dark Arts. They were always together. At quidditch games, cheering for their favorite team, sometimes bickering who was the better team. Sometimes they would sneak into each others common rooms or slip away to the Room of Requirement. They would practice spells and charms together and when they weren’t together they would always think of the other…Years later they were still together, both grown up to be Aurors, fighting evil and darkness and whatever threatened the wizarding world..together, side by side. The Lion and the Badger..
