some kind of record

art scavenger, moon enthuisiast, not here to polish the brass on the Titanic.

Today's Sidewalk Cartomancy: Queen of Spades, weathered. (It rained last night.)

if i was an animal and i knew i was being observed and researched i would do something super fucked up. but only once. never again. ruin their lives. keep them guessing.

The intro to this song has a perfect rolling walk cycle sound (...which I guess is kind of weird given the title, a song titled "Cheetahs" should be a Run Cycle, but this has a kind of measured, funky sound instead)---great bassline, fun sort of loose-electrical-wire-whipping-in-the-wind sfx sounds stereo bouncing, gorgeous jingle stick sound from the drum machine (this continues throughout the song), and then horns. OH and then for the bridge it brings in the Disco Violins, I wish there was a personnel list so I knew whether I should be crediting people who played brass and/or string instruments or just the person who chose and mixed the synths, either way it sounds great. The vocal is also pretty disco retro-y, not exactly my thing but it sounds good and the shifting echo effects work well.

This is a fascinating experiment in using instrumentals to increase the tension/intensity of a song while the vocal stays exactly the same (sweet, gauzy, some extremely Music Theory melodies). I love the static-morphs-into-buzzing-bassline-joined-by-dreamy-guitars opening, and then about a minute in an additional bassline and percussion in rapid-heartbeat staccato drop in and the song kind of goes from wistful beach sunset to "wistful beach sunset but you're kind of considering wading into the ocean with your pockets full of rocks." But like, in a Determined way. (Other Additional Tension instrumentals include a gorgeously jagged-distorted guitar that stereo-swirls around in the background, Even More Percussion [feat. Cybmals] at ~02:57.)

(beach sunset from here.)

This is a placeholder image because the photo I really wanted to take was hilariously thwarted, someone on my street had a trio of white balloons attached to their mailbox yesterday, I didn't try to photograph them then because the helium was keeping them aloft and blowing around in the wind. This morning, one was popped and the other two were deflated enough that they were all resting on the street, and I was approaching while opening my camera app imagining just captioning the photo "sad balloons :(" when a guy walked out of the house with some scissors and cut the ribbon attaching them to the mailbox so (presumably) he could put them in the garbage. So here are some daisies from behind a big depressing office building instead.

Did I just want to find some art of goldfish? Yeah, sort of. But the song is good, it's nice and colourful and shamble-y ("shambly" looked wrong) with loose, rollicking guitars and a very slightly retro/psychedelic dual vocal that has some interesting stereo stuff going on, and some nice also slightly retro/psych use of synth keys. OOH and there's a tambourine in here (on the sort of...bottom left corner of the mix, definitely giving me the impression of not only left-right but also that there's an additional vertical axis of sound in the song and the tambourine is toward the bottom of it). No idea what the lyrics are!

💀...I was going to do skull emoji beach ball emoji but apparently there isn't a beach ball emoji. This seems like an oversight, what if you need to talk about a beach ball?

This was on the grass in front of a giant office building so I guess someone threw it out of their car? Everyone is so gross.

So many good synth voices here, especially the lead line in that sort of bold, lightly-neon-buzzing resonant lead voice which is only improved by the way it stereo bounces, but there are too many other cool things going on here to describe them all, but I also really like the intermittent (and barely there, but present at the opening to set the mood for you!) kind of haunted forest wailing sfx stuff and then that big blocky uber-distorted spiny-spangly sound that comes in at ~03:19! I wasn't sure about the vocal at first but its mahogany dead-of-night-ness is growing on me, I like how it has a completely differnt kind of depth than all the surrounding synth. Most of the lyrics are slipping by me but I did catch "wild" rhyming with "beguiled" which is neat.
