peeta, in his beautiful little blond head, never seems to understand just how similar he is to katniss.

and that moment in the first games where they are both angrily recounting to haymitch all of the reasons why the other person will be better suited to win the games perfectly demonstrates just how highly they both think of each other and how little they think of themselves.

i think that peeta admires how amazing and selfless katniss is as a provider. and points out how he always falls short compared to her. how no one needs him. how useless his skills are. and by extension, how useless he is.

of course, we understand just how important peeta is to katniss's survival physically and emotionally. and how she thinks that world of him. but lately, i have been thinking about his decision to volunteer. 

because in the books, i feel like we are just made to think that it is normal. katniss and haymitch both knew immediately that peeta was going to volunteer and that there was nothing stopping him. and when we get to the actual reaping scene, suzanne spends half of a sentence explaining that peeta volunteers, taking haymitch's spot. 

everything moves so fast that it almost makes it seem like this is the next logical step. like, of course, peeta is going to volunteer. because he is peeta and that is just what peeta does. and when i first read the book, i didn't realize what a big deal it was for peeta to volunteer.

but there have been only two volunteers in district twelve's seventy-five years participating in the hunger games. two. a sister rushing forward to take her sister's place in a death match that promised almost certain death. and a disabled boy who enters the games for a second time, ensuring his death in exchange for protecting his lover. 

AND. THAT. IS. INSANE. 

and i can just hear peeta justify it to himself. even explaining that his volunteering isn't as impactful as katniss's. that he was a lost cause anyway. so, it isn't that big of a deal.

but both acts of volunteering are the same. they are both two people selflessly sacrificing themselves to save the people that they love. just like the bread. just like the berries. just like katniss trying to fling herself at the monkeys to shield peeta's body with her own in the quell. just like peeta maintaining his grip as katniss's teeth sink into his flesh while he rips the nightlock pill from her shoulder.

and i guess i am just sitting here dumbfounded by how insane it is that peeta volunteered. and because he didn't think that he was like katniss. but it just shows how much alike they really are. because they center their relationship on these acts of selfless sacrifice. because that is just who they are. and that is why they gravitate to one another. this is why it would have happened anyway. because in a world where everyone is expected to only fight for their own survival, these two lovers are entirely willing to sacrifice themselves for each other.

Part a movie adaptation was never gonna do justice was how unhinged/out there Katniss' inner monologue was at times.
