The dumbest thing I have ever had happen was when I bought my house.
My grandmother passed away, and we looked at it and figured out that I could have a mortgage for less than my current rent; this was right in the midst of the Bush recession so interest rates were dirt cheap
So I paid for a $80,000 farmhouse. Except that since I had no down payment, I couldn't get a mortgage for $80,000.
So... My dad, the executor of the estate, loaned me $20,000. And raised the price on the house to $100,000.
I paid the money back to my dad, thus putting down a 20% deposit. And thus I suddenly qualified for an $80,000 mortgage and moved from a poor neighborhood where I was paying ~$750 rent to a neighborhood where I pay ~$600 mortgage.
Literally nothing had changed except my dad gave me a check, which I deposited, then I wrote him a check back, which he deposited.
I had the good fortune to have a dad that could do that. But when that kind of bullshit accounting trick means you can get a mortgage you know screwing the poor isn't a bug it's a feature.

“So why aren’t those homes being filled?” He asks in a sarcastic tone of voice.

He continues, “80% of the American populace can’t save money, and even if they can save a little, they definitely can’t save enough for a down payment. Most of them probably don’t have great credit, so when they apply for a mortgage with a monthly payment that’s cheaper than their rent, they’re gonna get rejected! But people who have a lot of money can get those loans easily, and they can buy hundreds of houses if they want to. They don’t need the houses. But if they buy them and rent them out to someone much poorer than them, then the person they’re renting to will pay off their mortgage while they do no work.”
He rolls his eyes.
“You know, leeching off of the poor people’s income. That’s why landlords are leeches.”
