Here we go. This fundraiser is for @90-ghost and I’ve had it set up on his behalf because gofundme isn’t available in Palestine. I’m collaborating with a DC-based organization to help spread this on Facebook, but it’s been put together on short notice and the reach is limited, so we need your help: the need for someone to help spread it on Twitter still stands.

In case anyone is suspicious, I hate to have to do this, but I’ve reverse-searched Ahmed’s images (featured in the gofundme), checked his posts to see that he does use authentic Palestinian Arabic to the best of my knowledge (my family is from the West Bank and I’ve been there a lot), checked the story of his sister from 2021 and found confirmation of her murder, etc. If you have questions about me, well, Ahmed will vouch for me, and you can see from looking at my blog that this is a cause that has been near and dear to me for a long time; I’m Palestinian and would sooner die than do wrong by a fellow Palestinian fleeing death itself. Please help Ahmed by donating and/or spreading far and wide!

and i hate to always be that person but i feel like everyone sighing dreamily about this lighter should probably know that it's a zippo from the vietnam war — this particular lighter was sold at auction in 2012 as part of a large lot of lighters (archived page here)

during the vietnam war in particular these lighters became so associated with their usage in search-and-destroy missions, in which american soldiers would set fire to villages suspected of harboring viet cong, that the GIs nicknamed them "zippo missions" or "zippo raids." this connection became so ingrained that "to zippo" became a verb ("to zippo a village") and the whole war was sometimes referred to as "the zippo war." some of the most well known and horrific images from the war involve american soldiers lighting villages on fire in this way:

obviously there's no way of knowing who this particular lighter belonged to (beyond probably someone named butch) or what it was used for, and collecting vietnam war zippos is in itself a popular hobby among war memorabilia enthusiasts, but there is a lot of history that is closely linked to these lighters that isn't exactly cute and sapphic and romantic. also from the way people are talking about this, it seems like most of them probably do not know this history, so. do with this information what you will.

tl;dr imo any time you see an image of an old object with no historical information attached, it's worth doing a quick reverse image search to look into where that object comes from and the historical context in which it was made and used before deciding to romanticize it purely for the Aesthetic
