several people in the reblogs: #undescribed #no id
twitter: currently owned by techbro pissman
tumblr: actively removing functionality and bloating the interface with things nobody uses
discord: being retooled by ex-Meta management who don't understand the appeal of the platform
youtube: neutered by advertisers and algorithms and also tiktokification
reddit: half of the site is down due to protests about the outrageous monetization of third-party API support
facebook: my mom is on there
The whole Reddit thing is an especially striking example of corporate brain rot because, like, they managed to build their entire business model on the back of exploiting vast quantities of unpaid volunteer labour, and successfully convinced the entire Internet that this is a normal state of affairs. How do you fuck that up? How do you convince yourself that instituting a de facto demand for your very nearly 100% volunteer workforce to pay you for the ability to use the tools that are required to do their job is anything other than cutting your own throat?
Like, do they just not grasp the fundamentals of their own business model? Do they not realise that they're a for-profit business in the unimaginably envious position of employing a largely volunteer workforce? That's the only place I can imagine the idea coming from of going to people who doing the work of employees for free and saying "actually, you should pay us for the privilege of working for us".
going from the reddit star wars fandom to the tumblr star wars fandom is giving me insane whiplash. the upside is that people aren’t bitching about every single imperfect detail in the entire franchise, but the downside is that i’ve seen more fanart of obi wan and commander cody tenderly knowing each other than i have ever wanted to in my life in the last three hours and it has probably fundamentally altered the way i interact with the entire franchise
an internal memo leaked from ceo steve huffman saying the "noise" of the blackout will die out and they just need to weather it until we give up. fuck you spez.
first of all it's OVER EIGHT THOUSAND subreddits that went dark.
second of all he clearly doesn't give one single shit about the users or the UNPAID army of mods who slog through a million miles of shit every day to keep illegal and offensive content off the site (i'm a mod in a small fandom subreddit and even the shit i've seen is beyond the pale) and therefore make it appealing to the advertizers.
you have no fucking business without us. and you don't care one single bit about it.
he clearly did not mean for this memo to leak, but someone at reddit thought it was important enough to send it out anyway. please spread it (spreddit?) especially because so much of reddit is still in blackout.
This feels very similar to the uproar they LITERALLY JUST HAD in the D&D community over changes that would have negatively impacted third party creators. People started canceling their subscriptions to the paid service and Wizards of the Coast really thought they could get away with it by issuing a weak apology and waiting it out.
The community got angrier, so WotC thought they could get away with it by backing down to a half measure.
The community got even ANGRIER.
WotC ended up backing down to such an extent that they not only canceled all of the planned changes but released their core material under a creative commons license to boot, putting them BEHIND their starting position.
This is what we should be aiming for. I've used reddit daily for like fifteen years, but sometimes the only thing you can do to save a community you love is to genuinely be willing to walk away until the corporate bigwigs in charge get it through their heads that they actually NEED users. I want to make this the year of companies fucking around and finding out that unhappy users can cause them problems. Starve the bastards out and make them realize they need us more.
i called my vestige and azandar old man yaoi on twitter and his voice actor with over 20k followers retweeted it and said "nice 👍". they're canon now but i also think i'll die. does he know

A few things to add:
This is a blogging platform. Kinda. But it still is. A lot of the above is about suggestions about how to engage socially but I want to talk about the blogging part itself. This is your blog! You get to choose what's on it. You can also make as many sideblogs as you want (from your same user account), but you always have a main blog. Some people make sideblogs for specific interests. For example you could have a sideblogs for content about a particular fandom, for roleplaying, for your art or writing, for your pet frogs, whatever. If you make a blog that is very content specific people will probably follow you for that thing.
You can also dump all your stuff on your main blog (for example this is what phrases like "horny on main" mean).People will then follow you for your general vibes. But generally only reblog something if you want it on your personal blog. It's like a collection of stuff you like or have made. If you like something but don't want it on your blog you can, in fact just like it. However it's harder to filter your likes, and new users sometimes only like things and never reblog or make new posts for reasons described in the tags already. So it can be nice to have a blog, maybe your main, for the things you just like and so you can keep sideblogs content-specific while still reblogging cool art, cat pictures, etc.
Your blog also has an archive that's fun, you can edit the html and css of your blog to look however you want (you can find many themes online from good coders), and you can use tags for your own archival purposes. ie if you tag all nature posts you reblog as #nature you can then go to yourblog.tumblr.com/tagged/nature and see all those posts. You can also add other pages, add links on your blog to tags or things outside of Tumblr, etc. If you are interested in customizing your blog take a look at other people's for inspiration.
