Obviously mafia movies are super overplayed and they all sort of blur together which is why Goncharov really sticks out. We see the inner turmoil of these developed characters in bad situations, as opposed to obviously morally wrong decisions made by flat, 2-D characters. I’m not defending Katya, but I understand why she did what she did 100%, and the way the film shifts to her point of view after the Mirror Scene is just beautiful. Nothing is said aloud but the audience gets a subtle sense that this is not longer about Goncharov and the change felt very progressive, especially for the time. I know the ending was controversial but I do truly believe that it is what everyone deserved. Say what you want but if you don’t think Katya finally escaping her clearly arranged marriage —yes I said it— is a good thing you need some serious self evaluation. It wasn’t even a plot twist so stop pretending that it was.
