hey netizens! i'm not sure how many people are aware, but youtube's been slowly rolling out a new anti-adblock policy that can't be bypassed with the usual software like uBlock Origin and Pi-Hole out of the gate
BUT, if you're a uBlock Origin user (or use an adblocker with a similar cosmetics modifier), you can add these commands in the uBlock dashboard (under My Filters) to get rid of it!
youtube.com##+js(set, yt.config_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0) youtube.com##+js(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, []) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true)

Michael the Spiral in a worm-on-a-string jacket. It’s very obnoxious, it fits him well 🌀

more old tma art, this time of Michael / the distortion! had a lot of fun with this one :)
Facial Mapping Guide for Drawing Better Faces that took waaaay too long to put together..... (this is published on my Artstation linked on my LinkTree too in case the quality is too bad to see here)

My listening to TMA was very different in terms of common fandom exaggerations of supernatural visuals. I see this crazy art with really expressive weird stuff but to me, everything in my mind was completely regular. Human. There were some slight differences, like the tape recorder anomalies, and the Flesh creatures, obviously, were very weird even in my mind, but before season 5, it was all very mundane.
I think that it has some horror in it too. That you don't see the monsters right away. At first glance, they look like people. Like someone who actually could talk and think like any other human, while you have to keep reminding yourself that they are absolutely not.
Or are they? Are all of them now just monsters?
There is also no dramatic fog in my imagination, or glowing eyes when the Archivist or Elias use their powers. It's just their expression, and weird tape recorder sounds. It doesn't feel like they are using cool powers, it feels like the violence that it is. The confusion about why Jon can just "know" things is so much stronger - there is no hint that it's a magical skill. You can only appoint it that title based on your feelings.
Of course, the stark visuals from other people's interpretations are very impressive and get deep into my memory too. But I don't regret seeing the universe of this podcast this way. I hope I'm not alone with this.
No, because listen:
the real monster was the one inside us all along
I'm sure it's just from not being part of the first fandom listen, but I kept expecting... I don't know, actual moth Jon, or some canonical expression of him having a million zillion eyes, and it just...never happened?!
(specific spoilers under cut for MAG 200)
YES the point is so much stronger this way! The main theme in TMA is free will and "can you have good intentions and still get people hurt"
And the fact that they all don't have the visual barrier where you would say "oh they are definitely just monsters acting out of instinct" has so much value
Michael the Distortion looks often like a human with weird proportions until it's fun for him to show off the monstrosity
Jude Perry looks normal until she decides to actually look monstrous to freak Jon out
It's almost never out of their control in tma, if they look like a monster, most likely they choose to be a monster, they fully abandon their humanity not because of some weird force that overtook them, but because they explicitly chose so.
After all, the biggest criteria to become an avatar is choosing it conciously. Johnny wasn't even sure that animals could become avatars because they seem to lack the agency to make such complex choices (and then there is monster pig, bless Johnny's poor inconsistent heart, but then again it appeared out of nowhere if I remember correctly)
The art is really cool though, I am enjoying every single drawing I see. The artists add the pizazz to TMA and it's super fun!

One of the most profoundly definitive magical effect is whenever Peter Lukas appears from the Lonely. That someone who wasn’t there is now there. Or when he Lonelied Martin and left his entrance ajar.
Maybe the effect of Sasha and the experience of Not-Theming holds a similar weight.
The appearance of the Door with Michael/Helen distortions and the travel through the Spiral are also very tangible effects.
The Unknowing as an extension of the Stranger's influence is in opposition to reality as *we know it*.
The experience of Vast Sky Blue is also extraordinary in nature.
The Dark's statements are amplified by the lack of visual input as we cannot see what we don’t really even know is there.
There’s more than what I can come up with for now.
Sorry that I didn't make this more clear! It, of course, does happen, and is very supernatural. What I mean is, in my mind there were no "special effects" like Marting or Peter turning into a cloud so to speak, most of the moment's were for me sort of "it was there, I blinked and it wasn't". There are grotesque moments not including the flesh ones like jared hopworth, but it was more of a "TMA fandom sees the world very bright and spicy and I saw it way more mundane visually"
