Rio evolution: all characters played by River in films - from Explorers to Dark Blood.

There’s a level of honesty to everything River did that’s really striking to the point that when he did My Own Private Idaho, I really feel that people are looking around today about lesbian and gay rights, and people forget what a groundbreaker River was. River was a full-blown teen idol; Justin Bieber, teen idol! I was apoplectic with jealousy about how much everyone loved River! If you wonder why, go watch Stand By Me. There’s James Dean. James Dean has got nothing on that kid! And River worked with a really experimental filmmaker (Gus Van Sant), a person who was using cinema as art, as self-expression, not as industry.
River played a gay character at a time period when it was completely frowned upon. It was actively incendiary at that moment. It was a huge burden to bear, because River was a young man, and it pushed him into the forefront of a lot of situations that he wasn’t really sure how…he was just totally a piece of the unlabored inequality of mankind! But he didn’t need to be a spokesperson for this, that or the other. But, I always found him to be a beautiful leader in that way.

My Own Private Idaho [1991] - I’m a connoisseur of roads. I’ve been tasting roads my whole life. This road will never end. It probably goes all around the world.

get to know me meme: [2/10] movies - Stand by Me (1986): “I was 12 going on 13 the first time I saw a dead human being. It happened in the summer of 1959-a long time ago, but only if you measure in terms of years. I was living in a small town in Oregon called Castle Rock. There were only twelve hundred and eighty-one people, but to me, it was the whole world.”
