You don’t say.

For the record, she actually abandoned the movement BEFORE they all got whooping cough, but abandoned it too late. There’d been a breakout of measles in her area that caused her to reassess, and she and her doctor had already drafted and started a catch-up vaccination schedule, but her kids caught whooping cough just before it could be started. Then she wrote a blog post for The Scientific Parent explaining how she and her husband had come to wrong decisions in the first place, how they changed their mind, the consequences they suffered as a result, and asking other parents to please vaccinate their kids. And now she’s an activist for destroying the misinformation of anti-vaxxers, and reaching out to anti-vaxxers because she’s understands their fears but knows their kids deserve better.

She was trying to the best for her kids and just didn’t know how to interpret the validity of information or its sources, an actual skill that can be actually difficult and that is under-taught and a necessary first step to being able to trust vaccination research, so chose no action over taking an action she wasn’t sure of. She kept looking into it with family and friends and even eventually came to the right conclusion before her kids became sick, but it was still too late.

Honestly it was pretty brave of her to publicly admit she was wrong. She could have just quietly vaccinated her kids and not become a national news story, but instead she spoke out, even saying “I’m writing this from quarantine, the irony of which isn’t lost on me.” and also “I am not looking forward to any gloating or shame as this ‘defection’ from the antivaxx camp goes public, but, this isn’t a popularity contest.  Right now my family is living the consequences of misinformation and fear.  I understand that families in our community may be mad at us for putting their kids at risk.”

She understood the consequences and still put herself and her story out there.

You know what, it does take a big person to admit they were wrong so publicly and work to undo the harm. I believe I made fun of her in the past, but timemachineyeah changed my mind.

I work with a guy whio believes every conspiracy theory in the book, including not believing in germ theory. But when he got an ear infection, he took antibiotics- then went straight back to being an idiot.

Jesse, you’re forgetting that Dragons are not just beasts, they are inherently magical and they are of the element they embody, Jesse. An ancient white dragon would create an icy tundra wherever it built its lair merely by existing in that place over time. It is the surrounding animals that have adapted to the cold to even exist in the landscape of a dragon, Jesse.

Also dragons have teeth, Jesse. I don't think ice resistance is gonna be that big of an issue. The prey isn't teeth resistant, Jesse.

Besides, remember that white dragons are ambush predators. They don't need to use their breath weapon on their prey, since that prey is usually comfortably within tooth and claw range. Breath weapons are to repel the white dragon's main predator- adventuring bands which are generally not native to the tundra environment, or immune to cold.

I literally just finished the first Dragonlance book (the Autumn one) . I kinda loved it in general honestly, just a pleasant read. But ... Am I the only one who intensely ships Raist and Tanis?? Am I insane??? Spoilers under the cut:

I could see it, but Tanis annoys me so much I usually kill him off screen. His shtick gets VERY trying as the series progresses.

So it's taking me a hundred years but I am working on a Tanis/Raistlin fic! And restructuring large chunks of canon in an effort to make Tanis less annoying later on! XD

Definitely not alone, @eyeofthebrainstorm, they were my ride or die Chronicles ship that didn't get outclassed until I read Legends and Dalamar happened, lol.

Sounds very interesting!

Exclusive: Discworld TTRPG in the works by studio behind Fallout wargames

Modiphius, the studio responsible for tabletop adaptations of Star Trek, Fallout, and more, is working on a Discworld TTRPG.

Having secured the rights to the beloved series with an agreement from the late author Sir Terry Pratchett's estate, Modiphius is already at work on a Discworld roleplaying game "around the city of Ankh-Morpork and the wider Disc." This will hit Kickstarter later in the year.

Given Rhianna Pratchett is a games designer, I wonder if she might be directly involved. It would be good to have the actual family taking part.

My primary school had a uniform, but it was optional and about the most inoffensive uniform imaginable. Cotton sweater and tracksuit bottoms in black, navy or maroon.

Artistic Bird-Shaped Canopy Bed Follow Research.Lighting on Tumblr

@elodieunderglass a TRULY unusual offering!

Oh wow I’m obsessed with how the pillow end is supported. Is the whole thing cantilevered or is there a support of some kind…?

I can’t find another good image of this bed but they did several abs seem to have a bar support at the back.

I cannot recommend looking at more of Les Lalanne designs enough.

this bar for instance

Keep in mind these things were advertised heavily as being able to drive through reasonably deep water as a standard feature.

It does this even in the wading mode if you attempt to do so.

So much water gets pooled into the frame you can hear it sloshing around.

Tesla “vehicles” are about as reliable as the machinations of a cartoon coyote.

I genuinely don't understand how you fuck up the automobile so fucking bad. We've had close to a century of knowing that all of this "innovation" is stuff that doesn't work.

Because they deliberately and specifically avoided all that stuff we learned the hard way because it was "old fashioned thinking." Like steering wheel design. There were a lot of steering wheel designs before we settled on the ubiquitous one we all use, and quite a few of the designers of those earlier ones have biographies that end with "died during field testing."

Musk ignored ALL of that accumulated knowledge, thinking he was very clever, and built a car-shaped object.

I started reading this post feeling like "do not wash in direct sunlight" sounds like it should get filed alongside "do not feed after midnight" and other warnings about the husbandry of mythological monsters, and then it turns out that putting water on it (in direct sunlight) will kill it, not precisely like but still having very much in common with the Wicked Witch of the West.

What a time to be alive.

Do we know yet if a few weeks of rain does the same thing?

"Cybertrucks are so rugged they can stand up to anything! Except the things a car should reasonably be expected to go through in their daily life, that'll kill them dead easily."
