While I have finally finished the Danganronpa trilogy, I am definitely not playing Ultra Despair Girls. I saw the psychic garage that shit did to Berleezy and I'm not about to subject myself to that lmao

How would you rate ARMS' character select screen?
S
The definition of simple, but effective. This is pretty much how I would expect Nintendo to go about the visual design of an original, non-crossover fighting game IP. The entire game is presented like a broadcast of a national sport, and that shows in all of the visual elements, with the character select looking like a fight card.
Functionally speaking, all the characters are clearly visible, and you can even see your weapon layout alongside the character which was a very important part of the gameplay. Really good screen.

How would you rate the DBFZ character select screen?
So FighterZ is an interesting case because they actually updated the look of the character select screen in Season 3, so I'll grade the launch version and the latest version with all the DLC.
Launch Version - A
This is so close to an S and the only reason it isn't is because I can see an argument that the tilted character select screen can be tough to read for some folks, depending on screen size, but I love the visuals otherwise.
Post-Season 4 Version - S
Uses a lot of colors without looking garish, and I really like how the character grid looks. There's also a bit of pseudo organization with heroic characters on the left and villainous/antagonistic characters on the right. I kiiiiinda question Kefla's placement but she does oppose Goku in a sense, so if if makes sense for Hit, it makes sense for her.

Who'd You Rather: Street Fighter 6. Since it got an S rating.

Nick All-Star Brawl &Mulitversus?
Since someone already asked for All Star Brawl and I haven't covered the sequel yet, we'll just go with the sequel.
A
VERY good use of screen space, more interesting background compared to the first game, and it's relevant to the story because it's the purple void that the hub world is in, we get to see the models in action from the select screen, which is nice a nice touch, most of the animations the characters do are some kind of reference to their source material, and there's even an easter egg where every other time you pick Manny, the announcer will call him by his full name.
The main thing keeping this from being an S is that for some reason, when the DLC characters are added (not pictured), they aren't grouped with the other characters from their show. They're just tacked on at the end of the list.
As for Multiversus...
This here is the beta version. This gets a B. Gets the job done and I like that we get the stage in the background. You can also see any missions you have to do on the left, which is handy.
This is from the launch version of the game. This gets a C. Kinda bland compared to what we had before. We do get the trade-off of being able to see the full model, which is good for a game where there's plenty of character skins, but it wasn't an equivalent exchange IMO.
Sorry let me rephrase that: any female character from literally fighting game you've ever played.
You might wanna narrow that down.

...wut?
Marvel vs Capcom 3
Vanilla or Ultimate?
ultimate didn't know there was a vanilla version I thought "ultimate" was just part of the title 🤔
Yeah, Ultimate was an update to the vase game that added characters. This was back before patches and updates to fighting games became the norm.

This is what we call "understanding the assignment"
The comic book format is genius, especially since this game goes hard on the thick outlines and cel shading to give off that classic comic book feel. MVC3 had a distinct visual language that is consistent in ever part of the game, character select included.
hell yeah that's why it's most people's (my) GOAT fighting game but how does the vanilla compare if it changes much cuz I don't think I ever played that version.
The vanilla version was just a better execution of what MVC2 tried to do, with the icons a lot easier to read. Tho I'll miss the green if MVC2. Overall it's an A
Let's go retro Sonic the fighters lol.
B-
Love the music, the spinning camera around each character when you hover over them is a nice touch, and the font choices are good, but you'd think a Sonic game would have a more colorful background. something about the black void just kinda drags it down.
My bodies telling me ki1
But my mind is telling me clayfighters 63^1/2
Can I have both
Killer Instinct 1
F
I'm not gonna hold y'all... Killer Instinct was kinda fugly back in the day, and that extends to the character select, and it's not bias due to its age cause there are character select screens that are OLDER than this that I think are better. The music is the only thing it has going for it but every KI game has good music, so...
Clayfighter 63 1/3
C
I'm tempted to give it a D but this is some very good visual clarity. Just wish the background wasn't so dark. I can definitely imagine playing this on a CRT back in the day and all the colors in the BG just blending in. It helps the characters pop but I think it could have been done better.
Re: Wow, I legit forgot about the sequel--let's just go with the first.
C
This is what "mid" is supposed to mean. Not awful, not spectacular, just average, and that's what this screen is. It gets the job done but it's nothing to write home about.

BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend
B
Love the idea of the character select being a circle, though I'm not sure about the portraits being in monochrome. Kinda makes them blend into each other too much.
This screen also teeters on the edge of being too busy cause the background graphics move too.
