Bold. Brave. Brilliant.
CAMERON CHAPMAN as ANTHONY LOCKWOOD and RUBY STOKES as LUCY CARLYLE Lockwood & Co. 1.07: Mesmerised

This is the type of intimate scene that you wish all your favorite TV couples could share. He’s on the edge of despair and literally needs to feel her to breathe... They make each other brave, it’s wonderful.

But people getting the tags wrong - it’s Cameron CHAPMAN, not Monaghan. lol

how was west side story?

Well...it wasn't bad. It wasn't Evan Hansen. It was perfectly well-made and respectfully done, but it didn't move me, which is the unforgiveable sin. I couldn't help comparing it to the original movie, which is a top ten film for me and, in my opinion, the best musical ever made. I have to get my thoughts in order, so here we go. - No "Somewhere" ballet. Rude. - The worst of the worst: the guy they cast as Riff. What was that? I was expecting to go in disliking Ansel Elgort (more on him later), but my biggest problem was Riff. In the '61 film, Riff has charm. He has charisma. It's not hard to believe that he's a gang leader, someone that people would listen to and respect. You can feel the love between him and Tony. NONE OF THAT was in this version. Spielberg's Riff is a tiny little runt who is (justifiably) angry at the world, but you don't get a sense of him as a leader or a friend. He's borderline irritating. I felt nothing when he died. - Tony and Maria's relationship fell so fucking flat for me. Their meeting behind the bleachers (as opposed to the original film, where the entire room beautifully melts away) felt so...anticlimactic. There's a poor attempt at humor and Maria is so uncharacteristically aggressive. It didn't have the rhapsody, the ecstasy of Natalie and Richard's meting, which is so detrimental to Spielberg's version, because the only way you can root for a three-day relationship is to believe in the dreamy, otherworldly connection they have from the start. Without that, it's just two people who knew each other for 72 hours. - Speaking of Tony and Maria: (spoiler) I was SO ANGRY they gave "Somewhere" to Rita Moreno's character. She's a new character with 15 minutes of screen time, yet she gets to sing Tony and Maria's theme song? It felt like a total sop to Cerberus, and it took a lot of the emotion out of Tony and Maria's already-lackluster relationship. - I loved that they cast actual POC for the Sharks. That's the only thing that gives it a leg up on the original. I absolutely adored Rachel Zegler. She sounds like a Disney princess, yet somehow Natalie was still a better Maria? When I think of West Side Story, I think of Natalie's heart-wrenching scream at the end: "DON'T YOU TOUCH HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!" Obviously Natalie was a more experienced actress than Rachel is, but when Natalie played her final scene as Maria, I felt it in every bone in my body. I did not have that experience here.

- The musical numbers were good but they lacked the verve, the splash, the color of the originals. In the 1961 film, you can almost feel the choreography and the music vibrating off the screen. Compared to that, these felt a little anemic. "America" just did not hit as hard as it did on that rooftop. (New Anita is good, but she is not Rita.)

- I'm supposed to believe that Spielberg's Chino is capable of killing Tony? He was a fucking accountant. - Ansel Elgort. Did not look the part, did not sound the part, did not deserve the part.

I'd give the whole movie a 6.5/10, with maybe an extra point for Rachel Zegler. The original film is a 100/10.

I just read your WSS post and wanted to respond with a few points:

1) I00% agree with you on 'Somewhere'. I'm convinced they just gave that to Rita Moreno as a suck-up move because she complained about not wanting to do a cameo role. This is why I didn’t like the idea of this movie being made, because it just feels like a love letter to Rita more than anything else. I never liked her being held to a higher standard than the rest of the 1961 cast. She always complains about how the original was written and promoted brownface, yet she had no problem with accepting an Academy Award for it.

 2) This film is clearly about style over substance. One huge example is ‘America' being filmed out in the sunshine/open air. I HATE this (even if I’m in the minority) because It takes the lyrics about the Sharks feeling unwelcome completely for granted. If they have space and confidence to dance and sing outside then how are we supposed to view them as the underdogs of society? I just re-watched the 1961  version and I loved how it was filmed on the roof and the cast were still clearly enjoying themselves. The lyrics reflected the roof setting better.

3) I’ll politely disagree with you on Riff. I think Mike Faist was an inspired choice. His dancing is energetic and beautiful, he makes a dynamic screen couple with Paloma Garcia-Lee (Graziella) and I like the decision to portray him as a gritty character in this who almost expects death to hit him at a young age. Although my heart is still with Russ Tamblyn in the 1961 version, I like that they both play him differently. I like that Mike has a more strained friendship with Ansel’s Tony (especially given the criminal backstory of Tony in this version - it raises the stakes because Tony knows he cannot break his probation rules and Riff’s stubbornness could ruin that).

4) Agree with you on Chino. Making him a geek or whatever we’re supposed to call it = such a desperate attempt to make him more loved vs Tony. At the end of the day, he kills someone in cold blood and making him a more literate character doesn’t make that acceptable.

I really feel like I was in a shitty relationship for 15 years, treated inconsistently the entire time, kept going back because I was shown the slightest bit of affection every now and then, and have now been publicly slapped in the fucking face for ever bothering to care.

The sad thing is that it wasn’t shitty. It was a damn good relationship, full of sparks, chemistry, complexity and cliffhangers -- exactly what justified Logan’s “epic” speech in Season 2. However, I always got the feeling that Rob Thomas personally identified more with boring try-hards like Piz and never enjoyed how popular Logan/Veronica became among fans. I think they were SO good together that it was too challenging for Rob to write. It shows in the disgraceful way that he named the final season 4 episode after their Epic quote. Almost as if he’s mocking them.

honestly FUCK the ending to the 4th season of veronica mars.

i can’t believe I waited FOURTEEN YEARS for this bullshit ending.

Guess who will never watch even a second of a future season of this show? This kid.

Co-signed. Rob Thomas’ preference for Veronica dating one-dimensional bores like Piz and guys who she dumped for Logan in the past (Leo) is just inexplicable. He gave up on the only complex relationship the show’s ever had to exact some petty revenge on audiences who’ve always rooted for the non-cliche pairing. Heavens forbid we actually have some understanding for troubled teens with abusive upbringings! If Logan’s fate stays as this, I’m done with VM.

lol this reeks of sexism. yea ignore main lead daisy ridley saying jj abrams told her on the set of tfa, and believe simon pegg who was in the movie for 5 seconds who repeatedly says “i don’t know” throughout his answer in the interview.

What daisy has been saying since forever has always been ignored. Can’t trust that person with a vagina 🙄

OHHHHHHH! This quote confirms my bias? I’M GONNA RUN WITH IT despite what the Directors/Actors/Story Group has said because there’s no way this ISN’T HOW IT WENT. FOLKS WHO WOULD KNOW?!?!?!?! YOU MEAN LIKE FUCKING DAISY RIDLEY, YOU TWAT??!!

Daisy Ridley can’t be trusted with the facts of her own character!  Let’s trust this other guy!

I'm getting sick and tired of not being able to go onto social media for ONE DAY without seeing somebody try to disprove everything we heard and saw in The Last Jedi. Simon Pegg should have kept schtum, instead of fueling the fire. Anyway, I'm fairly certain that the haters are in for a huge awakening in Episode IX when they see that JJ Abrams is NOT planning to retcon Rian's work. Didn't JJ say that a lot of what Rian did was an extension of his and Larry Kasdan's own ideas? They need to stop acting like the answer to Rey’s parentage is the worst thing ever. Buffy Summers, the Slayer, had powers which did NOT come from her parentage. She was simply known as “The Chosen One”.

Why I Believe Rey is a Solo.

The reason I am mainly seeing to why people don’t believe she is a Solo is because they don’t understand why Han and Leia didn’t recognize Rey when they met her, so at the moment that’s the only point I’m directing.

My reply to this is always, they did.

They did recognize her.

This is the point where people go “No they didn’t??? And if they did, why didn’t they say something or act like it???”

But they did. You can see it in the way Han is amazed by how much she knows about the Millennium Falcon, or how he and Leia look at her when she isn’t paying attention. They look at her with unsure glances. How you would look at a high school friend that you hadn’t seen 10 years.

Or, how you would look at someone who you thought died years ago.

Yes, the reason they don’t recognize Rey or bring it up at all, is because they think she is dead.

Think about it, Han and Leia have two kids, and as we can see, they both have the force. It would only be logical for them to send both of them off to train with Luke, especially if the reason why they’re sending Ben off to train with Luke is because they’re scared that he has Vader in him. If Ben does, what if Rey does too? Might as well send her off as well just to be sure.

This theory also explains why Luke went into hiding.

Yes, sure. You could say that he went into hiding because he failed at training Ben. But. Get this.

Imagine, you’re Luke. Your sister sends to you her son, and her younger daughter. Most likely explaining that they were worried for Ben. So he trains them and the new ‘batch’ of Jedi, up until the point of the massacre.

Now, I believe that Kylo is just as strong and skilled as a lot of people do, but to kill all the training Jedi knights and younglings, is a bit of a stretch to me.

We’ve already been informed of this ‘Knights of Ren’ thing, but not what it is.

My theory is that he did the logical thing, and got a bunch of the Jedi to join him. Rightfully naming them, the Knights of Ren. Even if that is wrong, and they were just a bunch of people under Snoke, my theory still stands.

Anyways. Ben (now known as Kylo) kills all the Jedi. All but one. Rey. Because of course, how could he kill his sister? It’s even seen in her vision. She is lying there (as old her, but we can assume that it was really young her in the flashback) and one of the Knights of Ren, swings to kill her. When he is stabbed and she is saved, by a red lightsaber. Kylo’s lightsaber. Kylo.

He can’t kill her. She is his little sister. At this point, he isn’t strong enough in his hate or ‘darkness’. With roughly 10 years of training to be ‘evil’, he still killed his father with regret, how the heck could he kill his own little sister?

So he doesn’t. He convinces the other KoR either not to tell, or that he will kill her, and he goes off and secretly sets her on Jakku. He erases her memory and possibly gives her fake memories of her ‘parents’ leaving her on Jakku. That way he is assured that 1) She will ever be harmed. and 2) She will never be a problem.

No one knows of this but him. Luke, Leia, Han, even Snoke, all think that she is dead. And that is what pushes Luke over the edge.

Because of him, his sister lost two of the most, if not the most, important people in her life. Because he could not help Ben, his sisters kids are both gone. It makes more sense to me that he would run away because he is ashamed that he let this happen. That Leia will never be okay again. It is shame that drives him to be a hermit, not pain. We’ve seen Luke look straight into the eyes of pain. It’s not always an easy fight, but it would be easier than fighting off shame.

So when Han and Leia see Rey, it only makes sense why Han is so quick to take her under his wing. He see’s her, and he see’s the daughter he could of had if he hadn’t lost her. It explains why he looks at her with that “I know you. I swear, you are just like my daughter… But my daughter is dead.”

Not only that, but why they never bring her up. If your own daughter was murdered at the hand of your son, would you ever want to remember that? It also explains why they only talk about Ben oh so much (then again, killing a bunch of jedi usually does that)

It explains why Kylo screams “what girl?” when he hears that BB-8 escaped with a girl from Jakku, and why he is softer around her.

Another thing that came to mind when I was thinking of this, is what other people have been saying about how the lightsaber called to her. And it made me think of what Kylo says when they are about to fight. What starts the battle between Kylo and Finn.

He sees the lightsaber, and he screams “that lightsaber belongs to me”. After thinking about it, I realized something. That lightsaber is Anakin’s. Not Darth Vader. Anakin’s.

As J.J. Abrams says.

Kylo Ren idolizes Darth Vader, not Anakin Skywalker. He idolizes what Vader represents and what Vader was trying to do.

If he idolizes Darth Vader, and not Anakin, why the heck would he care so much for Anakin’s lightsaber?

Yes, you could say that it was because Darth Vader’s was destroyed or missing or whatever generally happened to it, so Anakin’s was the next best thing. But that just doesn’t make sense to me.

What does make sense, is that when they were training, Rey was given Luke’s (Anakin) lightsaber, because Luke decided that it was fit for her.

Now if you look at it through Ben’s point of view, he already feels angry and unloved from his parents, but now he isn’t even given the family lightsaber? He was the first born, shouldn’t that be his?

That theory also explains why when Rey touches it, she get’s her vision of that fateful night. (And why Kylo decided to make his own lightsaber.)

So when he is screaming “that lightsaber belongs to me!” he means it because he actually believes that it should be his.

In conclusion, I’m pretty dead set on Rey being a Solo.

I’m sick and tired of people like @ben-solo-ren who are desperate to change the Star Wars canon. Over-analyzing theories which have already been disproven. JJ Abrams already said in an interview on stage, “Rey’s parents and NOT in The Force Awakens.” Do you really think there would be so much promotion of Rey and Kylo’s relationship from Disney, Star Wars, LucasFilm and the actors if they were related?? WAKE UP. Rey is a “nobody” and THAT is what makes her special. Why are you so desperate to stay stuck in your deluded theories? Han and Leia had ONE child. Ben Solo. The only child that has ever been discussed in canon Star Wars novels. Do you realize that by rooting for Rey to be their child, it means you want them to be remembered as two of the worst ever parents in cinematic history? Do yourself a favor and move on.

Toward the end of The Last Jedi, having spent much of the movie in a sexually charged telepathic conversation with fellow force user Rey, Kylo impulsively murders his master before giving Rey a furious speech on killing the past in a bid to win her over. “You come from nothing, you’re nothing—but not to me,” Kylo tells Rey, in one of the most beautifully twisted declarations of love ever uttered in a family blockbuster, before quietly pleading with her to join him like he’s the most desperately lonely person in the universe… Kylo Ren, on the other hand, is the perfect antagonist for our complex world—a world in which one person’s villain is another’s warped hero, in which we view morality on a spectrum, and in which we’re all too familiar with the concept of cause and effect, and how the “good guys” sometimes inadvertently help to create their own enemies. When it comes to the villains, no: Star Wars really isn’t what it used to be. It’s better.
