@heresiae you should take a moment to consider that Riker is clearly shown onscreen being disabled (this is not how most people sit in chairs, it is an accommodation behavior), but nobody ever commented on it nor was there A Very Special Episode where Worf and Data have to learn that Riker Is Different And That’s Okay. The point of Riker is not that he is disabled (which is something that must be said by extension, because Jonathan Frakes was disabled and his accommodations were shown onscreen), it’s that he is Riker, and it so happens that Riker is disabled. (This was also true of Geordi, in the same series—although his visual prosthetic does come up in a plot at one point, it’s done naturally and he’s still Geordi, The Engineer On This Ship, not Geordi, The Disabled Character.) Disability does not prevent Riker from performing his duties aboard the Enterprise, and that’s the most important thing when the lives of everyone around you are depending on you and your captain.
And then ask yourself “what am I doing to bring about a world where disability representation is so matter-of-fact that disabled characters can just....be like Riker, and go about their storylines while being disabled without them having to be The Disabled Character Whose Entire Personality Is Being The Disabled Character?”
