Also it's incredibly weird to be like "the most powerful bargaining chips shouldn't get involved". Like what is the logic there. The point of a union is that everyone stands up for each other. Why would you not want influential voices and in-demand service providers being on strike and talking about it. It's like if a bunch of soldiers show up to defend a town and people are like "no, they moved away from that town for a while so they shouldn't be on the front lines, they should go away and let the town fend for itself". I do not understand the 'too rich and famous to strike' logic at all.

Sadly, there is a large part of the human race that thinks the goal of life is "amass enough money and power to stop getting fucked and start doing the fucking", and they can't wrap their mind around the concept of someone who isn't getting fucked anymore* caring about the people who are still getting fucked.

*as if Disney didn't deliberately and flagrantly violate their contract with ScarJo. Or Robin Williams, at the height of his career, for that matter. A-listers have stakes in this fight worth millions, and yes, they earned that money.

Even if success did make someone not care about fairness in their industry I don't see why that would matter. Boots on ground is boots on ground. We want practical achievement in securing fair pay and treatment, not a sincerity contest.

*sigh* The belief that OSHA and other safety regulations are cop behavior are common opinions that people have, anarchist or not. Wearing PPE is annoying and often uncomfortable, sweaty, and cumbersome. People also generally hate being told to be careful, because they believe that "be careful" is synonymous with "hey, you're too stupid to do that without hurting yourself".

But all it takes is one time for you to slip up and suddenly the grinder disk that would have gotten stuck in your safety glasses is in your eye, or you're getting treated for lung cancer because you didn't want to wear your respirator while you welded. These are decisions that you were free to make, but might seriously regret later on.

People will scream until they're blue in the face about how oppressive it is to have to wear a safety vest and hard hat on a construction site, but do you really think that the hammer that slipped out of your buddy's hand is going to take that into consideration when it collides with your skull?

No political theory will save you from an accident. You can either wear your PPE, or can die, unexpectedly, painfully, and slowly. The choice is yours. Go argue with a lathe if you feel so strongly about it.

Capitalism doesn't care about your safety. Safety regulations exist because they are written in the blood of those that came before you.

Cheat Code #2 for accommodating disabled characters in sci-fi/fantasy:

How you aid a disability depends on if it's a new development or had always existed.

i.e.: If someone's lost their legs to a griffin biting them off last week, giving them steampunk prosthetic legs is a good aid. There's something they can't do, that they very recently could, that they need to learn to work around. The prosthetic legs still need an adjustment period to learn how to use them, but your character knows how legs should work and can figure it out more easily.

If someone lost their legs because, as a child, they wandered away from the space field trip and got partially eaten by a carnivorous plant, then it depends. Prosthetic legs can technically work, but the longer the character was without legs, the harder it'll be to re-learn how to use them. You might want to go with bionic legs for short distances, but a hover chair for daily use.

If someone was born without legs, then prosthetic legs are more hindrance than they're worth. Your character has never had legs, and has no idea how they're supposed to work.

Imagine if you're in a world of centaurs; you're given prosthetic hind legs, and now expected to be able to climb up cliffs with the grace of a mountain goat. It's a whole new skill you'd have to learn, and you would get annoyed with it very fast; how are they supposed to sync with the legs you already have? How are you supposed to balance? You can't feel anything, you don't know how much space it occupies.

Someone who's always been disabled doesn't need the thing they were born without, they need aid that lets them do what everyone else can in a way they're familiar with. If your character has always been deaf, glasses with subtitles appearing on them are infinitely more useful than aids that let them hear, because hearing when you've always had silence is going to have a steep learning curve and be ridiculously overwhelming.

Your rule of thumb?

Try to give them something they're used to.

Note: This is different with very small children, because they're already learning how to use every part of them. If a toddler in your sci-fi was born without legs, they can be taught to use bionic legs at a very young age, but it has to start early or it'll run into the problems above.

we sometimes joke about how cis people entering a trans friend group often "become" trans, but on a serious note, just having a social context where, when you do stuff for yourself that feels good, you are met with reaffirmed friendship & confidence boosts, that's inherently going to help you become more comfortable identifying as trans if you are trans. and another great thing is it also helps people realize they can be as gender nonconforming as they want & still be cis if that's what feels right too.

it's win/win to have friends who are cool about gender-- everyone is better off when we can make decisions about our own bodies without fear of social ostracism.

consistent acceptance (& encouragement) of radical gender nonconformity is always going to make our relationships with each other safer and more fulfilling.

to be affirmed by friends in any context is wonderful, but to be affirmed by friends in a context where you are feeling vulnerable & still learning about yourself and yet you still consistently feel genuinely understood and believed about yourself by those friends is profound.

If so, they’re posing an accessibility issue due to blocking the sidewalks. Recommend your street layout allow for outdoor seating without blocking sidewalks.

Agreed. The foundation is sound, but there needs to be plenty of space to walk by seating without getting run over by a bike. Seating that hugs the walls of the nearby structure, and open storefronts that let people and services flow seamlessly between the commercial spaces and the sidewalks would be an improvement here.

If the tracked area is for trams/streetcars only, may I recommend that you make it green track?

Not only does it add much needed greenery to public spaces, but it also reduces heat at street level, reduces the running noise of trams and dramatically improves water drainage at street level. It even goes as far as reducing the damage to the tracks caused by the material expanding and buckling in high heat by simply keeping the rails cooler and better displacing heat.

It doesn't even have to be grass! Different species of plant, local species or hardier, low-maintenance species can be used, and furthermore, it tends to reduce maintenance costs of the tracks, as soil is easier to dig up than concrete or tarmac, and so the tracks can be accessed and worked on easier.

Obviously, if you want the street to be able to accept buses along with trams/streetcars, or other rubber-tyred vehicles, then a hard surface is necessary, but if it's light rail only, then green track gets my vote.

You still need the possibility for rubber based vehicles like Fire Cars or Ambulances to pass the streets.

You can't just put them on tracks because they need to be as mobile as possible to allow maximum efficency.

How about adding breaks to the bioswales to make it easier to cross the street?

Better for people with mobility issues and also means EMS personnel won't have to lift the stretcher over an obstruction. Back injuries are the number 1 reason people leave the field.

Yeah the trees are much more symbolic just to show that there are trees there, but bins are in by the benches
