Podcasts I Adore - Within the Wires, Bonus Season: Black Box

I’m assuming you don’t want to be on a recording that anyone official could listen to. They only listen to those black boxes when the plane crashes, anyway, so I guess it doesn’t matter.

While all regular seasons of Within the Wires are free to listen to, the Black Box season is a collection of bonus episodes published exclusively for supporters on Patreon. Published during and after season three, it is set between the end of season one and the final episode of season two, and tells us how someone from season one could get back home while being followed by some vague yet menacing organization. But we won't hear a word from that person on the run.

“There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. I know this already. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Remember this. Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly throughout the galaxy. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they’ve already enlisted in the cause.
Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. And then remember this: the Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear. Remember that.
And know this, the day will come when all these skirmishes and battles, these moments of defiance will have flooded the banks of the Empire’s authority and then there will be one too many. One single thing will break the siege. Remember this. Try.

I know someone posted the timeless main theme already, but my favorite musical moment in Goncharov is definitely the song that Katya sings in the cabaret just before the infamous poker scene with Sofia... and her reprisal of it just before she "dies" (EVEN THOUGH I STILL THINK EVERYTHING POINTS TO HER FAKING HER DEATH) just breaks my heart every time....

The music supervisors did their homework on this one too, because the lyrics are actually from a famous poem by Russian poet Alexander Blok, and they just fit the tone of the show SO well...

Night, street, lamp, drugstore,

A dull and meaningless light.

Go on and live another quarter century - nothing will change.

There's no way out.

You'll die, then start from the beginning;

It will repeat, just like before:

Night, icy ripples on a canal,

Drugstore, street, lamp.

UGH! THE THEMES! THE BLEAKNESS OF IT ALL! Anyway, if you need me I'll be hiding in my room and being absolutely normal about all this... and I may post more hard-to-find clips from the soundtrack to my music blog @traumaticmagic later
