Kim. 28. Bi, fat, ADHD/ADD, depression, anxiety. She/her pronouns. Full-time pretentious know-it-all. White and trying not to be an asshole about it. I'm argumentative and I swear a fuckton but please call me out if I'm doing something shitty and I will try my best to listen. I am social justice culture-critical. I try to promote diversity, examine my privilege, and call out when something is crap as much as possible, but I think some of the ways Tumblr goes about this can be pretty toxic. Feel free to ask me for more detail. Or don't. It's all good. It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia trash in spite of myself since January 2014. Blacklist "iasip" and "dennis reynolds' existence cw" if you don't want to see it.

Moving to indiwyn.tumblr.com

So after a billion years on this username, I’m starting fresh at a new one - I want to keep my friends list a lot more pared down, actually use tumblr savior, be way more active in responding to asks, generally change up how i do things.

I’ve been lazy about putting it up except for following some people, but from here on you can find me at indiwyn.tumblr.com, where I’ll start posting shortly. Feel free to follow me there!

Apologies for the single post that’s there now, it’s Bio’s fault.

Command Me To Be Well (MacDennis, IASIP, 1/1)

It’s two days before Dennis admits he might have a fever. By then there’s a sheen of sweat on his brow and his eyes are glassy. He struggles under the oppressive heat of the sleeping bag, wondering why he’s trembling with cold at the same time. One night sleeping at the goddamn pier, one! Street trash slept outside every day and didn’t end up with the plague. His naturally classier immune system must not have been prepared to rough it.

On May 29, 2014, the issue of timemagazine magazine which proclaimed the “Transgender Tipping Point” was revealed with me on the cover. June 1, 2015 a year and 3 days later, Caitlyn Jenner’s vanityfair cover was revealed proclaiming #CallMeCaitlyn I am so moved by all the love and support Caitlyn is receiving. It feels like a new day, indeed, when a trans person can present her authentic self to the world for the first time and be celebrated for it so universally. Many have commented on how gorgeous Caitlyn looks in her photos, how she is “slaying for the Gods.” I must echo these comments in the vernacular, “Yasss Gawd! Werk Caitlyn! Get it!” But this has made me reflect critically on my own desires to ‘work a photo shoot’, to serve up various forms of glamour, power, sexiness, body affirming, racially empowering images of the various sides of my black, trans womanhood. I love working a photo shoot and creating inspiring images for my fans, for the world and above all for myself. But I also hope that it is my talent, my intelligence, my heart and spirit that most captivate, inspire, move and encourage folks to think more critically about the world around them. Yes, Caitlyn looks amazing and is beautiful but what I think is most beautiful about her is her heart and soul, the ways she has allowed the world into her vulnerabilities. The love and devotion she has for her family and that they have for her. Her courage to move past denial into her truth so publicly. These things are beyond beautiful to me. A year ago when my Time magazine cover came out I saw posts from many trans folks saying that I am “drop dead gorgeous” and that that doesn’t represent most trans people. (It was news to be that I am drop dead gorgeous but I’ll certainly take it). But what I think they meant is that in certain lighting, at certain angles I am able to embody certain cisnormative beauty standards. Now, there are many trans folks because of genetics and/or lack of material access who will never be able to embody these standards. More importantly many trans folks don’t want to embody them and we shouldn’t have to to be seen as ourselves and respected as ourselves . It is important to note that these standards are also infomed by race, class and ability among other intersections. I have always been aware that I can never represent all trans people. No one or two or three trans people can. This is why we need diverse media representstions of trans folks to multiply trans narratives in the media and depict our beautiful diversities. I started #TransIsBeautiful as a way to celebrate all those things that make trans folks uniquely trans, those things that don’t necessarily align with cisnormative beauty standards. For me it is necessary everyday to celebrate every aspect of myself especially those things about myself that don’t align with other people’s ideas about what is beautiful. #TransIsBeautiful is about, whether you’re trans or not, celebrating all those things that make us uniquely ourselves. Most trans folks don’t have the privileges Caitlyn and I have now have. It is those trans folks we must continue to lift up, get them access to healthcare, jobs, housing, safe streets, safe schools and homes for our young people. We must lift up the stories of those most at risk, statistically trans people of color who are poor and working class. I have hoped over the past few years that the incredible love I have received from the public can translate to the lives of all trans folks. Trans folks of all races, gender expressions, ability, sexual orientations, classes, immigration status, employment status, transition status, genital status etc.. I hope, as I know Caitlyn does, that the love she is receiving can translate into changing hearts and minds about who all trans people are as well as shifting public policies to fully support the lives and well being of all of us. The struggle continues…

i’m alternately on an anon meme or getting eaten alive by Dragon Age and various visual novels these days, but every now and then I worry my love for Sunny has faded and an image of Glenn Howerton speaking words appears on my dash

thus reassured that no, it has not, that is not a thing that happens to me, I promptly stumble across three different ‘activism’ posts that lack any kind of thoughtfulness or nuance and make my blood pressure raise to dangerous levels. at which point I nod serenely and once again disappear forever, or at least until I’m bored tomorrow and need things to stare at.

There’s another amazing thing that happens in this movie that few people have commented on, and that I want to point out, and that’s the lack of the pervy camera. We know the pervy camera. It’s the camera that zooms in on women’s asses and legs and torsos and sexualizes their bodies, like the camera itself is licking them up for the male viewer. We see these every time Megan Fox is in a movie. We see these in every movie from Transformers to Sucker Punch, to BountyKiller, to Grindhouse. It’s become so ubiquitous that I remember watching the end of Gravity where the camera pans around behind Sandra Bullock’s butt and I was like, “Oh God please no” and I was surprised, actually surprised, that the camera shot her the way it would in an actual serious film that was filming a male character instead of the way it would film a woman in a softcore porn movie. And George Miller – for all that he dresses the rebel wives in white muslin bikinis – does not shoot any softcore porn here. Max stumbles onto them while they’re washing themselves off with a hose, and while it’s a striking scene after all that sand and violence, it’s not porny. These women are washing themselves like practical people, not male sex fantasies, and the camera captures them that way. Even when the film has the opportunity for a full-frontal female nude shot – with the motorcycle matriarchy member sitting up on the broken electric pole as bait – it demurs. This is a rated R movie, but the nudity was not necessary to the story. Hear that, HBO? The nudity was not necessary to the story. Here’s this movie saying, “People aren’t things” that actually uses its camera work in a way that backs up its political position that people are not things. Yes! “People are not things” is a political position now. Oh, 2015! Who’d have thought arguing that “Slavery is bad” in fucking 2015 would get people complaining about how that was taking an extreme political stance, eh?

The film editor to Mad Max is a woman! The editor to this gorgeous, incredibly visually coherent movie is a woman by the name of Margaret Sixel, who has NEVER EDITED AN ACTION MOVIE BEFORE. Talk about rising to the occasion!

George Miller said of her at the Cannes press conference that he wanted her to edit it because if guys did it, it would look like every other action movie out there. “She’s here to keep us from embarrassing ourselves,” Miller laughed. He continued, “The movie is like rubix cube; we needed someone with a lot of brainpower and a low threshold for boredom. She did not allow any repetition in the movie.”

pumbaa from the lion king has flatulence issues that are beyond his control and is socially isolated and rejected for it. this rejection drives him into the arms of a (male) meerkat. in this post i will discuss the themes of the lion king that represent pumbaa’s inherent queerness and his disability, how it interacts with the savanna, and how him and timon both queer norms and subvert them by making their own rules in their relationship and living outside of a society that rejects them. i will also discuss how pumbaa’s ailment is weaponized later on in the movie, when he defeats the hyenas with an aspect of his identity that had been used against him.
