man like. being lgbt kind of ruins time with relatives in a very specific way that cishets will never truly experience. like family time can be rough tm but theres a special brand of discomfort that lgbt people face and it’s kinda wild

It’s the specific feeling of “these people’s love is entirely conditional, and I know exactly what the conditions are, and one day I’m gonna have to bite the bullet and come out and none of these people will love me anymore”. It’s not a feeling cishet ppl experience for obvious reasons.

Even with family that Accepts You tm, theres always this level of “I can only talk about being gay so much before it gets Uncomfortable. I cant actually talk about dating bc someone will look like they ate a raw lemon whole eventually until I’m told I’m oversharing and then conversation will turn to Perfect Cousin with her Perfect Husband and When Are We Going To See Babies? Are they trying? How often? And just….its annoying that it still has to be Rough tm when u do come out and for the most part ur still loved an accepted, but u cant actually talk about it too much, even in the sense of Finding Someone or Boo Evil Politics bc ppl will STILL get visibly uncomfortable

Hot take but polyamorous people are oppressed for their orientation (ok yeah not the right word but close enough, it’s certainly not a lifestyle choice for most people) and therefore are LGBT+ and yes I make the rules sorry not sorry

We don’t have marriage equality. We don’t have legal rights to our loved ones, or parental rights for our kids if raised outside of state approved relationships. We are routinely harassed and abused for being polyamorous if we are out. We suffer the mental harm of being in relationships that aren’t right for us if we aren’t out, or frequently even if we are. Who we are on a fundamental level is seen as something to be suppressed or negotiated on for the sake of a partner, but even thinking of expecting the same sacrifice from them is labelled abuse. Being polyamorous is used as a justification to rape us. Loving more than one person is labelled as child abuse. Like, this isn’t even a reach, this is a lot of the same shit others in the community face.

you know what, sure, let’s go with this.

Karen is a straight, cis woman. She has six male partners. She can marry at most one of those partners, which means that only one of her partners can visit her in the hospital if she gets sick, and only one of her partners can share finances and health insurance with her. If she has children, only one of her partners is legally considered to have any ties to the child; if she died, her other partners would not get custody, regardless of their ties to said child; her child is considered by many to be abused because Karen has multiple partners.

Conservatives consider Karen a degenerate who will burn in hell; many feel that she deserves to get an STI; many feel that her polyamory is a justification for raping her. Her parents may very well have disowned her for having multiple partners. She likely spent her adolescence and early adulthood in relationships that were not right for her, believing that asking for what she needs in a relationship was tantamount to abuse, believing that any relationship that would be right for her was morally wrong.

How is Karen queer? More like, How the hell is she not?

it’s really great how poly exclusionists see it like of these “if you think coming out as gay is hard try telling people you [do something they believe is entirely socially acceptable but also phrased in the weirdest way possible]” situations but have clearly never considered the logistics of coming out as poly

I don’t think polyamory counts as queer per se, but I don’t understand people who insist that being polyamorous or kinky is absolutely nothing like being queer, to the point where they get angry at poly/kinky queer people for comparing their own experiences.

The three communities are linked, and all three are marginalised in similar ways for similar reasons. The fact that being queer gets you jabbed with the sharpest end of the Conservative Family Values stick doesn’t mean that

Like, I have what exclusionist types call a ‘Mogai Hell story’. I went through countless identity labels in my teens, including ‘panromantic grey-asexual’, which I know they all think is innately ridiculous (it’s not, for the record. It fits for some people). I now just go as bisexual or queer.

My ‘Mogai Hell’ was caused by shame and ignorance about my sexuality, but  liking girls had little to do with that. The shame was caused by my kink, which I denied existed until I was nineteen, to the point where I convinced myself I had no sexuality at all. The thought of my sexuality being that terrified me to the point where it was easier to just ID as asexual and pretend I liked thinking about certain things ‘for research purposes’, and that any accompanying sensations were purely incidental and meant nothing.

The ignorance was because I had no mental map for how to figure out my orientation when the typical sexual cues didn’t work for me. If I didn’t feel anything when I looked at penises or vaginas, and never got off to the thought of people having sex, then… I must be asexual, right? Or maybe a really weird bi person? No, a straight person with a complex. No, I need a microlabel- maybe this one, or this one, or…

… You get the idea.

I realised embarrassingly recently that I’m clearly bi, and the only reason I thought I was anything else was because I kept trying to install vanilla.exe into obligatekink version 2.0.

The exclusionists would say that all this is impossible, because kids can’t have kinks and kinky people aren’t oppressed (and therefore aren’t stigmatised at all), and also kink is gross so it’s good to not count it in your sexuality, actually. They’d say that the experiences I had can only be caused by internalised homophobia or biphobia. That nothing besides your orientation can matter that much, that only full-on oppression can get in your head that badly.

But the fact is that I was always perfectly OK with the prospect of liking girls. Kink was the sticking point that took time and effort to make peace with.

Realising I was some brand of non-monogamous was fairly easy for me, but I know damn well it isn’t for others. My partner took a stupid amount of time, misery, and failed relationships to figure out that he’s poly. And as for the people I know who are in triads, and have to deal with explaining to their families, landlords, and doctors that yes, they have two partners, and would like to be able to treat them both accordingly, please and thank you… I don’t envy that at all, and would find it hard to navigate if it were ever me. Hell, I know people who’ve been accused of harming their children, purely because they and their husband had a girlfriend who lived with them.

This went off the rails a bit, but tl:dr I’ve had enough. “Being kinky and poly doesn’t make you queer” is a perfectly valid stance to take. “Kink and poly isn’t queer because nobody gets hurt for being kinky or poly” is incredibly inaccurate and ignorant.

I was also “asexual” until I wasn’t.

It was actually “some amount of bdsm is necessary for me to stay interested.” But ending shame about “weird sexuality stuff that isn’t Oh Presst” would have helped me realize sex (including gay sex!) is neat, I just also like power dynamics.

So if you want people to realize “you’re not ace you’re really just a lesbian” or w/e *first try destigmatizing both.*

“Not acceptable to the mainstream due to deviance (and suffering for it)” seems to be the major defining queer experience, and I feel like out of all the orientation types, queer in particular ought to err towards inclusion rather than exclusion.

Practicing radical acceptance towards, and fighting for the acceptance of, queer-adjacent things like polyamory and kink, costs little and carries the benefit of providing even more opportunities to attack the same forces of oppression as are behind more particularly anti-LGBTQ+ things.

In any case, the amount of historical and current confluence of LGBTQ+ and polyamory/kink/etc. feels to me like they ought to be considered at least stepfamily, as it were.

I teach. At my fairly progressive school, i am openly out as bisexual and advise the GSA club. There are multiple gay and lesbian teachers, and they get no drama from the admins. My school even has a float in Pride every year. But if my admins found out I am poly, I WOULD BE FIRED AND BLACKLISTED FROM TEACHING, under the morality clause of my contract. No, poly isn’t queer exactly, but it can sometimes be more oppressed and discriminated against, just for loving who I love.

This stuff to me really shows the limits of identity politics. Idpol isn’t evil (sorry conservatives) but it *can* make it very hard to even see “im not a member of your group but I have similar or sometimes even worse experiences, because the same sort of bad reasoning that makes people hate you also makes people hate me.”

supporting bi men also means supporting bi men who (heavily) prefer women. it means supporting bi men who end up marrying a woman and being happy with her, while also acknowledging that they are still bisexual men at heart. they arent acting their bisexuality out ‘the wrong way’, because there is no ‘right’ way. what they do with their love lives isn’t any of your business.

foods that will poison cats:

  1. alcohol

  3. caffeine
  4. dairy products (adults turn lactose intolerant)
  5. fat trimmings, raw meat, eggs, fish

  7. onions and garlic

I HAD NO IDEA ABOUT TUNA OMFG

Avatar

If I remember rightly it’s the trace elements of mercury in canned tuna that is toxic to them. Their kidneys can’t filter it out like human kidneys can.

ok im gonna break this down a bit because some of these are BLATANTLY untrue and it kills me every time i see this.

alcohol: not very good for humans, either, but alcohol effects pets the same way it effects humans: targeting the brain and the liver. the issue? it takes way less to kill your cat than it does a human. you weigh, on average, at least 100 pounds (or 10x) more than your cat does. 3 teaspoons of liquour could kill your cat. don’t do it. alcohol WILL poison your cat.

chocolate:  theobromine (and to a lesser degree, caffeine) is the issue with this one. humans? we can break this down in our bodies. cats, dogs, birds, ferrets? they can’t. it usually takes a pretty big amount of theobromine to cause a pet to actually die, though. it’s present in cocoa, so the higher % of cocoa in a chocolate, the less needs to be ingested to cause serious, life-threatening effects. baking chocolate has a high concentration of theobromine and 1 square can kill a cat or small dog. white chocolate is a low risk, on the other hand. chocolate CAN poison your cat, especially DARK and BAKING chocolate.

caffeine: same story as alcohol: not that great for humans either, causes similar effects as in humans… just quicker and with less caffeine ingested. elevated heartrate, seizures, etc. can be seen. dogs and cats are more sensitive to the effects than humans are. caffeine WILL poison your cat.

dairy: cats are lactose intolerant and so their bodies cannot properly break it down– much like how we can break down theobromine and cats/dogs can’t. however, it’s not going to poison your cat, just give them diarrhea and other gastrointestinal upset. dairy WILL NOT poison your cat, but will cause gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea, so it is strongly recommended to not give dairy products to your pets.

fat trimmings: fat trimmings are just fat. if you feed fat to your cats, they will become fat and/or it will increase the level of lipids in the blood, leading to diseases and complications like chronic pancreatitis, which can be fatal. fat trimmings WILL NOT poison your cat, but will lead to disease that can be fatal, so it is strongly recommended to not feed fat trimmings to any pets.

raw meat: cats can eat raw meat. cats are obligate carnivores. cats are designed to only eat meat, and raw meat is not of serious risk to them. disease carried in raw meat? not a problem when you are a cat who has evolved over millions of years to eat raw meat. i hate hearing “cats can’t eat raw meat!” from people with outdoor cats. you realise your cats are eating raw lizard and bird, right? raw meat has more nutrients than cooked meat (which we eat veggies & fruits to compensate for– cats can’t digest these) and, obviously, there are some diseases and bacteria that cats aren’t immune to but cats are less likely to eat rotten meat than dogs are, anyway. treat the meat like you treat human meat and it’s totally fine. cats are DESIGNED TO EAT AND DIGEST RAW MEAT! IT’S PERFECTLY FINE TO FEED YOUR CAT RAW MEAT, but make sure that the meat is in-date and properly stored/cared for. rotten or spoiled meat CAN lead to disease and poisoning, but the same goes for 90% of the animal population!

eggs: its ok to feed your cat eggs. im not even sure why this is a question. raw eggs rarely carry salmonella and even humans rarely contract salmonella from infected eggs. your average cat will never contract salmonella from raw eggs, only in an immuno-compromised cat would this ever be an issue. cats can safely eat raw and cooked eggs, as salmonella is pretty much only a concern in an immuno-compromised cat in the first place.

fish: see raw meat above. fish, however, is a bit of an exception because of higher levels of mercury & low levels of taurine and differing balances of phosphate and calcium mean that it’s not a sustainable diet for cats and could lead to mercury poisoning or bone disease if it is the only protein given. when given ~1 time a week and with varied proteins there is no issue. again, cats are DESIGNED TO EAT AND DIGEST FISH AND OTHER MEATS! however, previous warnings about storing fish correctly still applies, and proteins should be varied due to fish having different levels of phosphorous, calcium, and taurine and mercury content. a primary diet of fish CAN lead to bone disease or mercury poisoning in extreme cases.

grapes and raisins: admittedly, this one is a bit of a wild card. some pets eat raisins/grapes without an issue, but in others, these can cause renal failure and death rapidly. we still don’t know why. animals with prior kidney issues are more likely to be effected by grape/raisin toxicity, and cats are more likely to have kidney issues due to many cats not getting adequate moisture in their diet. grapes and raisins MAY lead to poisoning in some cats and dogs, especially those with pre-existing kidney conditions.

onions and garlic: yes! all members of the allium genus (shallots, scallions, leeks, etc. are included) contain thiosulphate which, when ingested by cats and dogs, can lead to a serious condition in the blood known as hemolytic anemia. basically: their red blood cells burst. this can be fatal and a small amount of onion/garlic/etc. is needed to cause clinically significant issues. onions, garlic, and other members of the allium genus CAN and WILL poison your pet in even small amounts.

tuna: see fish above. canned tuna tends to be soaked in oil which leads to the same issues as fat trimmings in increasing lipid count in the blood. sashimi quality tuna will also have higher concentration of mercury and shouldn’t be consumed more than occasionally in the cat’s diet. canned tuna in oil is often too fatty and leads to the same issues as eating fat trimmings, however, tuna steak/sashimi/etc. quality tuna is the same as other fish: occasional inclusion in the diet is fine!

xylitol: relatively small quantities of this (an artificial sweetener) will cause a sudden drop in blood sugar in dogs, which can lead to comas, seizures, or death. many times, if they are not rushed to the hospital immediately, they will die, and even then, they may suffer permanent liver damage. however… cats are not adversely affected, and typically aren’t attracted to foods w/xylitol in it in the first place. xylitol is NOT likely to poison your cat, but small amounts can KILL your dog, moreso than chocolate!

The dragon actually hoards uncomfortable situations

Writing about a child rapist did not make Vladimir Nabokov a child rapist.

Writing about an authoritarian theocracy did not make Margaret Atwood an authoritarian theocrat.

Writing about adultery did not make Leo Tolstoy an adulterer.

Writing about a ghost did not make Toni Morrison a ghost.

Writing about a murderer did not make Fyodor Dostoevsky a murderer.

Writing about a teenage addict did not make Isabel Allende a teenage addict.

Writing about dragons and ice zombies did not make George R.R. Martin either of those things.

Writing about rich heiresses, socially awkward bachelors, and cougar widows did not make Jane Austen any of those things.

Writing about people who can control earthquakes did not make N.K. Jemisin able to control earthquakes.

Writing about your favorite characters and/or ships in situations that you choose does not make you a bad person.

It’s a shame that in this day and age these things need to be said.

Or, in short: the narrator =/ the author.

You know what else is a shame? This nowadays tendency of putting on the author the responsibility of teaching their readers morality.

Authors are allowed to write morally ambiguous characters.

Authors are allowed to write downright despicable characters - and guess what they are even allowed to make despicable characters charismatic and likeble and the protagonists of their stories if they wish - because absolute monsters exist only under the bed.

It is not up to the author to spoonfeed the readers about morality and Yes I know this character did a bad thing and I am going going to show it in the story and make other characters call them out of it and– Bullshit.

The authors should be able to write what they want without having thousands of people jumping and their throats claiming to know them, their ideas and their morality based on what they write.

It’s not up to the author to teach you about what is right and what is wrong.

less “if you see a man and woman together at pride be nice! they could be bi/pan/trans/ace/aro” and more “stop gendering strangers to harass them anywhere, but especially at pride holy shit”

you know what? i want this to reach the people who do this– especially the ones claiming to support trans folk (usually in really hollow ways lol i’m not bitter). keep reblogging– i want this sentiment to be widespread and for people to stop gendering strangers! especially in explicitly LGBTQ+ spaces!

Okay this is a sidenote and people will get pissy but I don’t care. I totally agree that people should mind their own business and stop assuming things about people at pride (and in everywhere else), but like even if they’re straight and cis, then that doesn’t make them any less deserving of respect and kindness. Stop being assholes to allies and then getting mad that there aren’t enough allies (none of this is directed at op btw!). There aren’t enough allies because you’re pushing them away with your shittiness and it’s honestly that kind of behaviour that makes the community toxic a lot of the time. Be nice to everyone, especially since the whole point of pride is celebrating love and joy. Hasn’t everyone had enough of all this “them against us” bs? Because I sure have. Allies are there to support us, so stop throwing it back in their faces and treating them with such hostility when they’re trying to help

being against incest and pedophilia (yes, even in fiction) doesnt make me an “anti” it makes me a normal god damn person with like, morals and stuff

Avatar
queerly-tony

Being “against” it can mean a lot of things. Are you “against” it for your own consumption, or are you “against” everyone in the world writing/consuming that kind of fiction?

Am *I* personally “against” pedophilia in fic? To the degree that I say “NOPE, SQUICK, WILL NOT READ”, yes, I am “against” it for my own consumption. Am I “against” someone else writing or reading it? No.

It is perfectly normal to be disgusted by these concepts in real life and in fiction. That’s ok. It’s also ok to be disgusted by them IRL but ok with them in fiction.

Some people are better at separating fiction from reality, and while they are 100% disgusted by these things in real life (because they’re not a pedophile), they find some appeal to it in a fictional form.

I am 100% disgusted by rape in real life. I would not want to be raped, I don’t want anyone else to be raped, and I would never want to be a rapist. I don’t even make “drop the soap” or “prison bitch” jokes because newsflash, prison rape isn’t funny.

Would I read a piece of fiction featuring a prison rape gangbang, where it’s clear the reader is supposed to be deriving erotic pleasure and the scene, and it isn’t just meant to be horrifying? Hell yes - FUCK, I’VE CO-WRITTEN THAT FANFIC. I enjoy the hell out of rape/noncon/dubcon, in fictional form. Because it’s fake. It’s a fantasy. It’s not real.

So here’s the bottom line… if you’re “against” anyone reading or writing pedophilia or incest in fiction, then YOU ARE AN ANTI.

For the people who are out there “fighting the good fight” and “trying to make fandom a better place,” I have two important questions for you:

1. Is the author dead? x

2. Is your baby in the bathwater? x

What do I mean by those things? Let’s start with #1. The Death of the Author is a type of literary criticism, the extreme cliff notes version of which is that art exists outside of the creator’s life, personal background, and even intentions. I’m using it slightly differently than Barthes intended, but that’s okay, because the author is dead and I’m interpreting his work through my own lens.

In fandom, the author is dead. In fact, the author was never alive in the first place, not really. The author has only ever been the idea of a person, because unlike published fiction, the only thing we know about a fanfic author is that which they choose to tell us about themselves.

Why is that important?

Because it might not be true. Hell, that happens in real life with published authors, who have SSN’s on file with their publishers, who pay taxes on the works they create and have researchable pasts. If the author of A Million Little Pieces could fake everything, why can’t I? Why can’t you? Why can’t the writer of your favorite fic in the whole wide world?

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: “you can only write about [sensitive subject] if [sensitive subject] has happened to you personally, otherwise you’re a disgusting monster that deserves to die!!” Or maybe “you can only write [x racial or ethnic group] characters if you’re [x racial or ethnic group] otherwise you’re racist/fetishizing/colonizing!”

You can play this game with any sensitive subject you can come up with. I’ve seen them all before, on a sliding scale of slightly chastising to literal death threats.

Now, I could tell you that I’m a white-passing Latina whose grandmother was an anchor baby. I could tell you that I speak only English because my family never taught me to speak Spanish, something which I’ve been told is common in the Cuban community, though I only know my own lived experience. I could tell you that I’m mostly neurotypical. I could tell you that I’m covered in surgical scars. I could tell you lots of things.

Are any of these true? Maybe! I could tell you that my brother has severe mental development problems, so uncommon that they’ve never been properly diagnosed, and that he will live the rest of his life in a group home with 24-hour care. Is that true? Am I allowed to write about families struggling with America’s piss-poor services for the handicapped now?

Am I allowed to write about being Cuban? After all, I did just say that I’m Cuban. But is it true? Can I instead write a character that’s Panamanian? Maybe I really am Panamanian, not Cuban. Maybe I’m both. Maybe I’m neither. Maybe I’m really French Canadian. Should we require people to post regular selfies? I can’t count the number of times I’ve had someone come up to me speaking Arabic, and I’ve been told that I look Syrian. What’s stopping me from making a blog that claims that I am Syrian? Can you even really tell someone’s race and ethnicity from a photo?

Am I allowed to write about being a teenager? Am I allowed to write about being a college student? Am I allowed to write about being an “adulty” adult? Can I write a character who’s 40? 50? 60? How old am I?

All of this is to say: you can’t base what someone is or is not “allowed” to write about on a background that may or may not be real. No matter how good your intentions. And I get it - this usually comes from a place of well-meaning. You’re trying to protect marginalized groups by stopping privileged people from trampling all over experiences that they haven’t suffered. I get that. It’s a very noble thought. But you can’t require a background check for every fic that you don’t like.

If you say “you can only write about rape if you’re a rape victim,” then one of three things will happen:

Real survivors will have to supply intimate details of their own violations to prevent harassment

Real survivors will refuse to engage and will then have to deal with death threats and people telling them to kill themselves for daring to write about their own experiences

People who aren’t survivors will say “yeah sure this happened to me” just to get people to shut up

Has that helped anyone? I mean really - anyone??

So now let’s get to point #2: is your baby in the bathwater?

If your intention is to protect marginalized people from being trampled upon, stop and assess if your boot is the one that’s now stamping on their face. Find your baby! Is your baby in the bathwater? Which is to say: find the goal that you’re advocating for. Now assess. Are you making the problem worse for the people you’re trying to protect? Does that rape victim really feel better, now that you’ve harassed and stalked them in the name of making rape victims feel safe?

Let’s say you read a fic that contains explicit sex between a 16 year old and a 17 year old. Is this okay? Would it be okay if the writer was 15? 16? 17? Should teenagers be barred from writing about their own lives, and should teenagers be banned from exploring sexuality in a fictional bubble, instead of hookup culture? Is it okay for a 20 year old to write about their experiences as a teenager? Is it okay for a 20 year old to write about being raped at a party as a teenager? Is it okay for a 30 year old? How about a 40 year old? Is it okay so long as it isn’t titillating? Is it okay if taking control of the narrative allows the writer to re-conceptualize their trauma as something they have control over? Is it okay if their therapist told them that writing is a safe creative outlet?

Is your author dead?

Is your baby in the bathwater?

Now let’s take a hardline approach: no fanfiction with characters who are under 18 years old. None. Is the 16 year old who really loves Harry Potter and wants to read/write about characters their own age better off? Should they be banned from writing? Should they be forced to exclusively read and write (adult) experiences that they haven’t lived? Will they write about teens anyway? Should they have to share it in secret? Should 16 year olds be ashamed of themselves? Should we just throw in with the evangelicals and say that the only answer is abstinence, both real and fictional?

Let’s say that no rape is allowed in fiction, at all. None. What happens to all the hurt/comfort fics where a character is raped and then receives the support and love that they deserve, slowly heal, and by the end have found themselves again? Are you helping rape victims by banning these stories? Are you helping rape victims by stripping their agency away, by telling them that their wants and their consent doesn’t matter?

Is your baby in the bathwater?

Fandom is currently being split in two: on one side, the people who want to make fandom a “safer” place by any means necessary, even if that means throwing out all of the marginalized groups they say they want to protect - and on the other, people who are saying “if you throw out that bathwater, you’re throwing the baby out too.”

The whole point of fandom is to be able to explore all kinds of ideas from the safety and comfort of a computer screen. You can read/write things that fascinate you, disgust you, titillate you, or make your heart feel warm. This is true of all fiction. People who want to read about rape and incest and extreme violence and torture can go pick up a copy of Game of Thrones from the bookstore whenever they want. Sanitizing fandom just means holding a community of people who are primarily not male, not straight, not cis, or some combination of those three, to higher and stricter standards than straight white cis male authors and creators all over the world.

There is nothing you can find on AO3 that you can’t find in a bookstore. Any teenager can go check out Lolita, or ASOIAF, or Flowers in the Attic, or Stephen King’s It, or Speak, or hundreds of other books that have adult themes or gratuitous violence or graphic sex. The difference is that AO3 has warnings and tags and allows people to interact only with the types of work that they want to, and allows people to curate their experiences.

Are these themes eligible to be explored, but only in the setting of something produced/published? Books, movies, television, studio art, music - all of these fields have huge barriers to entry, and they’re largely controlled by wealthy cishet white men. Is it better to say that only those who have the right connections to “make it” in these industries should be allowed to explore violence or sexuality or any other so-called “adult” theme?

Does banning women from writing MLM erotica make fan culture a better place?

Does banning queer people from writing about queer experiences make fan culture a better place?

Is M/M fic okay, but only if the author is male? What if he’s a transman? What if they’re NB? Who should get to draw those lines? Should TERFs get a vote? What if the author is a woman who feels more comfortable writing from a male character’s perspective because she’s grown up with male stories her whole life, or because she identifies more with male characters? What about all the transmen who discovered themselves, in part, by writing fanfiction, and realized that their desires to write male characters stemmed from something they hadn’t yet realized about themselves?

How can we ever be sure that the author is who they say they are?

Who is allowed to write these stories? How do we enforce it?

Is it better for none of these stories to ever exist at all?

Have you killed your author?

Have you thrown out your baby with the bathwater?

Be careful with marijuana, bipolar, paranoid, and psychotic folks. You may not realize until you’re already in it, but marijuana can trigger psychotic episodes, paranoid episodes and make bipolar mania worse. There has been a fair amount of research on this and google is free.

For only anxious/depressed folks, do whatever helps you. Just be aware the marijuana doesn’t help everybody and the persistent “Marijuana is Cool” culture can hurt people.

also! if you’re on lamictal, pleeease be careful around marijuana since it has triggered seizures in folks on lamictal in the past!!

Shit this is extremely helpful to know. I’ve been put on Lamotrigine (Lamictal) since my last encounter with marijuana. Stay safe!

marijuana has a vasodilation effect meaning it expands or “dilates” blood vessels, which in turn lowers blood pressure, which in turn speeds up heart rate. people with anxiety, including myself, can sometimes suffer actual worsening of anxiety with marijuana due to the brain misinterpreting the physical effect. this has happened to me multiple times. I’ve had a friend go to the ER because her anxiety got so much worse after smoking weed that she thought she was having a heart attack. even if you only suffer from anxiety, be aware of the possible side effects weed can have.

As an ER doctor, I see patients with marijuana side effects fairly frequently. A lot of people don’t know that marijuana can trigger latent psychosis, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder; even if you don’t have any symptoms of these conditions you might get them from using marijuana, and it can happen the first time or the hundredth time. If you have a close relative with any of these disorders, you have a particularly high risk of triggering them in yourself.

I know marijuana is a very popular drug, and for some people the effect of using it is worth the risk - after all, everything has a risk; I see patients who’ve been in traffic accidents every day too, or fallen off horses or bicycles, and most of them go right back to driving/biking/riding… People do things that might be a little bit dangerous because they consider the benefits worth the risk. But it’s important to educate yourself about the risk so you can make an informed decision. :)

If you do use marijuana and see a doctor for some reason, even unrelated, please tell us! We aren’t allowed to tell anyone else (breaching patient confidentiality will have our medical license revoked), and marijuana can interact with medication (as mentioned about Lamictal above), so it’s very important that we know it when treating you. :)

what if the teenage mutant ninja turtles exist in the mcu but they’re just really good at staying under the radar and criminals are too embarrassed to admit they got beat up by some guys in “turtle costumes” so they blame daredevil. peter parker worked as a pizza delivery boy for a while and brought like eight pizzas to a man hole cover but thought nothing of it bc nyc

peter parker: i once was one minute late delivering pizza and the dude was like “forgiveness is divine, but never pay full price for late pizza”

clint barton: oh cool u met one of the tmnt

literally everyone: who

clint: am i the only one in this goddamn city who knows about the crimefighting turtles that live in the sewers

(they all think clint is playing an elaborate prank on them, especially when he shows them a photo of four guys wearing what are ‘very obviously halloween costumes’)

fun fact: it’s TMNT canon that the chemical container that hit Matt Murdock across the face and gave him his Daredevil abilities is the same canister that landed on the baby turtles and mutated them, so…..y’all aren’t far off

i’m sorry it’s WHAT

TMNT started as a Daredevil parody.

Matt’s teacher is Stick. The turtle’s is Splinter.

Matt’s enemy is the Hand. The turtle’s is the Foot Clan.

It was originally a dark, edgy, turtle themed parody of Daredevil.

How was I not made aware of this before?!

I talked to a young man with white hair on a boat cabin in the middle of a stormy sea. He forgot everything about himself exept for the fact that his name rhymed with ‘Time’ so he started calling himself Time.

I offered him an orange in exchange for a meaningful chat. He took the slice and told me “Nothing’s set in stone, but they’re set in a dirt road. If you roll your wagon in the same path too much it’ll soon be the only path you can take without struggling.”
