so I started a new anxiety medication this past week and so far it’s been going very well except that I have extremely vivid dreams and apparently sleep texting. I seem to have sent this at 3am and i have no memory of it

but i am Right

"A tweet would kill someone from the past" is NOT true because the intertwined religion and politics and monarchy in the 1600s in Britain was literally 100x more toxic than any social media fandom discourse. you think that you could kill a puritan with twitter? fools. it wouldn't even faze them and then they would tell you their thoughts on the divine right of kings and those would kill YOU

Samuel Pepys once kissed a 300 year old corpse in front of his wife and children and that's not even the weirdest thing he does in his diaries.

....does context explain anything about the corpse kissing....

Okay so first off, my apologies, it was only a 200 year old corpse. Not 300.

Second of all, he did it because it was his birthday.

So Catherine of Valois was the wife of Henry V. She was buried in Westminster Abbey in the 1430s. Some time about a century later her tomb is damaged during building work on the Abbey and the lid of her coffin is knocked off so people can see the body. This then becomes a tourist attraction.

About another century after that Samuel Pepys, famous diarist and world renowned weirdo, decides that for his 36th birthday he would like to spend the day walking around Westminster Abbey with his family.

They get to Catherine's tomb and he's like "you know, for my birthday, I would like to kiss a Queen".

So he does.

"On Shrove Tuesday 1669, I to the Abbey went, and by favour did see the body of Catherine of Valois, and had the upper part of the body in my hands, and I did kiss her mouth, reflecting upon it I did kiss a Queen: and this my birthday and I thirty-six years old and I did kiss a Queen."

Catherine wouldn't be properly re-buried until Queen Victoria was on the throne (another 200 years).

This is the standard winged nightjar and it has one singular stupidly big feather on each wing... if you even care.

Love this guy

That’s standard as in “pennant” or “banner”, not standard as in “normal”.

But it’s not a pennant-winged nightjar. THIS is a pennant-winged nightjar… if you even care.

can’t forget the Lyre-tailed Nightjar! there’s actually a number of these ridiculous guys, and they’re partly why caprimulgiforms are some of my favorite birds

also the Sickle-winged Nightjar, which is. come on, that’s just a weird moth

Everyone does care about nightjars 🥹

“your rent should be a third of your income” well wouldn’t that be nice. wouldn’t it. lower the rent pussy

Casual observation from someone old enough to remember: in the year 2000 financial advice was that rent should be no more than 1/4 of your income.

Avatar

Until the mid 80s, the advice was that if you must rent instead of owning, then that 20% of your monthly income (oh yes, only 20%) should include all your utilities too.

After all, rent costs more than a mortgage, so it should offer more too.

The housing market is a fucking travesty.

Hmm what happened in the mid eighties....

Austin Powers adaptation that focuses on Austin's emotional reaction to being frozen for over 50 years. He tries to go find old friends and loved ones from his time, but they're all very old now and many of them no longer believe in the radical projects of the counterculture movement and are now actively working against the very things they fought for during the 60s. Meanwhile, he sees all around him people still fighting for the very same things against states that have become more and more effective at suppressing the radical leftist ideas that he holds dear. He becomes disillusioned with the cat and mouse game between himself and Dr. Evil, where an evil capitalist supported by the systems of the state fights against representatives of that same state. His dreams of a better world dashed by suppression, subversion, and apathy. Austin Powers then goes rogue, fighting against not only Dr. Evil, but the same secret government agencies he once allied himself with in an attempt to affect real change from outside the system. And also he fucks a woman named Peg Ingyu or some shit.

Okay, so I'm insane: here's the official soundtrack of this unofficial Austin Powers movie

As one of their many collectors edition sets, Mattel announced "The Greek Goddess" series. However, this series was a bit fraught in a few ways.

The first doll in the collection was Medusa, who isn't even a Greek Goddess. An inauspicious start to the Greek Goddess collection (why didn't they just call it the Greek Mythology collection?), but even more baffling, they left out Medusa's defining feature.

Snakes on her arms, snake necklace, snake earrings -- and long curly brown hair? Where is her snake hair, Mattel? You had one job.

Aphrodite and Athena were released in subsequent years and have quite nice designs. I don't have as much to say about them, but they were nice looking dolls.

But the puzzler of the collection is Artemis, who was officially announced, and photos of the prototype were released, but who never actually hit shelves. Some theorized this was because it might draw ire from animal rights groups to release a huntress. But then again, none of the goddesses are particularly child-friendly.

the rudest most helpful thing anyone ever said to me is "why do you keep hurting your own feelings long after [the person who once hurt you] probably forgot about it" like literally just dear god you've split me open so neatly my entire soul is just flopping around on the ground between us now but thank you

Just fyi if you're autistic/adhd and struggle specifically with this sort of thing, please know what what might be happening is something called perseveration, which is a common neurodivergent behavior that can include, among other things, revisiting emotions repeatedly and being unable to break loose from processing or managing stressful events.

Don't keep hurting your own feelings. But don't feel bad if you get stuck there, either. Something else could be going on.
