the thing is there's like, a point of oversaturation for everything, and it's why so many things get dropped after a few minutes. and we act like millennials or gen z kids "have short attention spans" but... that's not quite it. it's more like - we did like it. you just ruined it.

capitalism sees product A having moderate success, and then everything has to come out with their "own version" of product A (which is often exactly the same). and they dump extreme amounts of money and environmental waste into each horrible simulacrum they trot out each season.

now it's not just tiktokkers making videos; it's that instagram and even fucking tumblr both think you want live feeds and video-first programming. and it helps them, because videos are easier to sneak native ads into. the books coming out all have to have 78 buzzwords in them for SEO, or otherwise they don't get published. they are making a live-action remake of moana. i haven't googled it, but there's probably another marvel or starwars something coming out, no matter when you're reading this post.

and we are like "hi, this clone of project A completely misses the point of the original. it is soulless and colorless and miserable." and the company nods and says "yes totally. here is a different clone, but special." and we look at clone 2 and we say "nope, this one is still flat and bad, y'all" and they're like "no, totally, we hear you," and then they make another clone but this time it's, like, a joyless prequel. and by the time they've successfully rolled out "clone 89", the market is incredibly oversaturated, and the consumer is blamed because the company isn't turning a profit.

and like - take even something digital like the tumblr "live streaming" function i just mentioned. that has to take up server space and some amount of carbon footprint; just so this brokenass blue hellsite can roll out a feature that literally none of its userbase actually wants. the thing that's the kicker here: even something that doesn't have a physical production plant still impacts the environment.

and it all just feels like it's rolling out of control because like, you watch companies pour hundreds of thousands of dollars into a remake of a remake of something nobody wants anymore and you're like, not able to afford eggs anymore. and you tell the company that really what you want is a good story about survival and they say "okay so you mean a YA white protagonist has some kind of 'spicy' love triangle" and you're like - hey man i think you're misunderstanding the point of storytelling but they've already printed 76 versions of "city of blood and magic" and "queen of diamond rule" and spent literally millions of dollars on the movie "Candy Crush Killer: Coming to Eat You".

it's like being stuck in a room with a clown that keeps telling the same joke over and over but it's worse every time. and that would be fine but he keeps fucking charging you 6.99. and you keep being like "no, i know it made me laugh the first time, but that's because it was different and new" and the clown is just aggressively sitting there saying "well! plenty of people like my jokes! the reason you're bored of this is because maybe there's something wrong with you!"

On this day, 23 April 1979, Aotearoa/New Zealand born teacher and socialist Clement Blair Peach was hit by police on an anti-Nazi demonstration in Southall, Middlesex, possibly with an illegal weapon, and later died. Peach had joined thousands of people in an area with a large south Asian and Sikh population to protest against a meeting of the far-right National Front in the town hall. After he was hit he was taken into a nearby house which an ambulance was called. He was then taken to Ealing Hospital with an extradural haematoma, and died shortly after midnight. A subsequent police investigation found that one of six members of the notoriously violent Special Patrol Group was responsible. The officers’ lockers were searched, and illegal weapons discovered like a lead cosh. The officers also quickly cleaned their uniforms and changed their appearances after the attack, and several of them lied to investigators. As a result of the deception, the guilty party could not be identified. The investigator did recommend that three officers who had conspired and lied should be charged with obstruction and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, but the director of public prosecutions appointed by the Labour government declined to prosecute them. Officials refused to hold the inquest into Peach’s death in front of a jury, and despite multiple witnesses testifying to the police attack, the inquest returned a verdict of “death by misadventure”. The coroner disregarded witness testimony which he deemed to be from people who were socialist, or who were Sikh, and according to him “did not have experience of the English system” to be reliable. Since at least the 1930s, police in the UK routinely have helped neo-Nazis organise meetings and demonstrations, attacking and arresting anti-fascists who protest against them. See the chap with glasses and an incredible moustache in the bottom right? that's Magnus Hirschfeld, the gay Jewish doctor who ran the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft (Institute for Sexual Research) in Berlin. It was largely his books, his research that the Nazis burned.

It is important to note that this action was not an "oh, Nazis ALSO targetted other prople". They directly linked Hirschfeld's institute and research to claims of a Jewish plot to destroy German society.

If that sounds familiar, it's because it is the EXACT same rhetoric being rolled out by prominent TERFs for the last few years including, yes, The Wizard Lady.

Why do we even have to write meta

I was thinking recently about how "alt" subcultures are so aestheticized now but they used to be much more about your societal views than the clothes you wore or even the bands you listened to, and my brain connected some dots. Idk if this is anything

Yes, this is it! This is exactly it!!

Writing prompt? No. Writing much delayed.

There are two things I love about this moment.

First of all, Sherlock protects John. By pointing a gun at his head, yes, but think about it. Sherlock’s name is already being dragged through the mud. Scotland Yard already thinks he’s a psychopath and a possible murderer. Even before the Moriarty debacle, his name and reputation were already tarnished with people like Sally Donovan, and it’s only getting worse.

John’s isn’t. The most John gets from outsiders is a bit of confusion. People figure he’s either a bit daft or touched for sticking with Sherlock or that he’s too kind-hearted to leave him because he’s all Sherlock’s got (supposedly). But he isn’t judged or looked at with disdain in the way Sherlock is.

Sherlock obviously knows this and when he finds himself having to drag John into this mess with him, he doesn’t hesitate to protect John’s name. He makes himself look even worse in the eyes of the Yarders by pretending to take John hostage, which also keeps John’s good name somewhat intact (he did just punch the Chief Superintendent, but that’s a far cry from pulling a gun on a bunch of cops and fleeing an arrest).

Second, John completely and unwaveringly trusts Sherlock. Wild, unpredictable, reckless Sherlock who throws himself into danger’s path again and again, points a gun at a crowd of police officers and then turns and points it at John’s head, his finger on the trigger and John doesn’t so much as flinch. In fact, he seems far less uncomfortable with Sherlock pointing a gun at him than with Sherlock pointing a gun at other people, because he knows he’s safe. There are no questions asked and no hesitations. No “Maybe we should think this through,” no “Why are we running when we both know you’re innocent?”, no “Be careful with that deadly weapon you’re waving around”. There’s a “What are we doing?” but it’s spoken more in the tone of “Let me in on your plan so I can work with you” rather than suspicion or apprehension.

Yes, we know that Sherlock would never do anything to seriously hurt John and John knows that, too, but accidents do happen. High stress situations, people panic, get a bit jumpy, fingers slip… But John trusts that Sherlock knows what he’s doing, trusts him not to make a mistake with John’s life in his hands, and trusts that he has a plan and that it’ll work. In all this mess, with Moriarty worming his way into the heads of everyone around them, planting doubts and twisting truths, John still trusts Sherlock wholeheartedly.

Because that’s what John and Sherlock do. They protect each other and they trust each other, no matter what.

But - wait, wait, wait… Sherlock is pointing his gun at John? And he has his finger on the trigger? >:)) Sadly, Sherlock doesn’t seem to comprehend that this actually means John is OK with it. After this, Sherlock probably felt he had to jump out of John’s life because he thinks he’s a danger to John. The rumours. The ‘confirmed bachelor’ accusations. He had to protect poor John ‘I’m-not-gay’ Watson against this great big madman with his great big gun and his finger on the trigger. Now people will definitely talk…

I’m know I’m not the first person to say this, but any newbies on tumblr really need to understand how different this is from a lot of other social media. Particularly tiktok.

I just saw a creator on tiktok reminding followers that it’s actually a problem when someone goes back to the earliest post and watches all the posts chronologically, liking and commenting along the way. The stupid app recognizes it as spam or something and then kinda puts a halt on their account? Literally punishing people for positive engagement?? 🥴🤦‍♀️

I’ve already heard people saying years back how they don’t want to be “creepy” and go through a persons blog, liking and reblogging tons of stuff. But think how many more people are going to be worried about it now, thinking they might do actual damage! Most people, especially younger people, are so used to the way tiktok works now. So please, do not ever worry about this on here. Just remember-

You will never do any harm if you go on a like and reblog fest through someone’s tumblr blog! The only risk you’re taking is to make the blog owner weep for joy!! 😭🤣

This website literally passes around posts that are so old, the newest comments are celebrating things like “Happy 10th anniversary to this post!” sometimes.

The worst that usually happens is a creator going “wait, what, HOW did you find that 7 year old post that had no tags buried in the depths of my blog?”, very few people actually get mad about it (and from what I’ve seen, the people who do are all entirely immigrants from socmed sites like TT where they have entirely different cultures about it.)

Tumblr itself is based around longevity in many ways.  So, just have at it.  Have fun.  If you like that post 12,000 pages deep on my blog, GO FOR IT.  That’s what this website is all about
