@shy-but-swears-a-lot

Hello, I welcome you to my blog! Please call me Shy. My anxiety is doing eternal jumping jacks on the summit of Mount Everest and my self esteem is making a sand angel at the bottom of the Dead Sea and will continue to till the end of time. I am Genderfluid so my pronouns fluctuate greatly. I am Asexual and Demiromantic, nice to meet you all!

[in an Australian accent] “Okay so, story time, I have this little mouse that I named Billy Bob that’s been living in my pantry, he’s been there for months. Um, today I heard him squeaking in the pantry so I went and looked and guess what- he got his head stuck in a rigatoni~”

Man I hope they cancel standardized testing, any education professional can tell you it’s a bunch of useless horseshit that does nothing except make students and teachers miserable while utterly failing to accurately gauge understanding.

“why yall gotta make everything about race?”

because everything is about race. you just upset cause we’re talking about it.

can we all agree that being overdressed is a myth made up by boring stuffy people who are too worried about other people’s lives and don’t want you to have fun

conversely, can we all agree that being underdressed is a myth made up by stuffy classist people who are too worried about other people’s lives and don’t want you to be comfortable or happy

holy shit

Abled Person: Hey man, can you hold this wad of $2,000 and this one penny for me while I open my wallet?

Disabled Person: YOU COMPLETE AND UTTER FOOL!

The United States Government:

(Watch how many people don’t get this.)

In order for disabled people to receive any sort of financial assistant for their housing, food, bills, medical supplies, etc., they cannot ever have more than $2,000 of resources to their name. Ever.

It doesn’t matter what it’s for.

You’re saving up for a new wheelchair?

For college?

To put a downpayment on a house?

Hell man, you just happen to budget for once in your life so that you can have some extra money in case something bad happens?

Your benefits immediately get cut off if you’re a cent over $2,000.

And, even worse, you usually end up having to pay back every dollar the government gave you that month.

So say you get $400. If they find out you’re twenty dollars over the resource limit, you have to give them all $400 back and you undergo an investigation of your funds to see if you will continue getting money.

“What if I spend the money that day?”

Doesn’t matter. In fact, from what I can tell, people who do this are actually put under investigation for fraud.

And yes, this system literally kills people.

Remember when “Guardians of the Galaxy” came out? one of Rocket Racoon’s creators, Bill Mantlo, suffered an accident in 1992 and has irreparable brain damage.

before the movie came out, Marvel gave him an exclusive preview screening. SOme people were upset because they felt if Marvel was really wanted to thank mantlo, they should have donated money to Mantlo’s family.

Bill Mantlo’s brother had to come out and explain: If Marvel gave them monetary aid, Bill Mantlo would lose his financial assistance.

That’s so utterly depressing.

disgusting

I have friends on welfare who won’t pick up a penny in the street because they’d risk the welfare they struggled to get for 10 years.

Avatar

oh look another fucked up thing in this world. let’s just add it to the list. number 63858b

My brother has been on California State SSI for autism for the last 10 years, and he absolutely has to (no joke, HAS TO) spend all 720 bucks of his SSI every month, because if he puts it in the bank he risks losing his SSI altogether.

Sometimes, at the end of the month, he has no idea what to do with his money because the whole month went by and he still has 400-ish bucks in his account, and he fucking panics because he doesn’t want to get anywhere near 2,000.

And here’s the funnest part of the story!

One day he did a huge commission on Second Life and wound up earning 1500 bucks off of it, and he told the guy to donate it 500 bucks at a time over 3 months. The guy didn’t want to, and just donated all 1500, which put my brother at 2,036 bucks.

The state IMMEDIATELY (I’m talking less than an hour) called him up to tell him over the phone that they were canceling his SSI, because they noticed he had gone over the 2,000 buck threshold. He had to tell them that someone had made a charitable donation to him and that this was not a common occurrence in any way shape or form, and upon not believing him, my mother had to call to talk to them as his legal caretaker and say basically the same thing until they called off the cancellation of his SSI money.

He also had to cancel his renter’s assistance because it put him to 1,062 a month, so if he went 30 days without spending any money they’d cancel his SSI altogether. Like, none of us in the family have any fucking clue why that regulation is in place and it’s the stupidest shit in human history.

Please, legal side of Tumblr, tell me what positive reasoning this law has?

Happy 4th of July everyone! This is what the “nation of opportunity” looks like.

There’s something called an ABLE account that can help. If you are on SSI and were diagnosed as disabled before the age of 26 you can apply for an ABLE account that will allow you to save up to $99,000. More people need to know about this!

Reblog to literally save a disabled person’s life

This shit is why conservatives think disability is fun pampering, because they see disabled people have to come up with ways to get rid of the money and to them it looks like they must be rolling in excess.

Hollywood has no concept of what 5th century Romans looked like. If I'm watching a movie about the final days of the Western Roman Empire, I should be seeing zero togas. It's like if you made a movie about the Trump administration, you wouldn't have people dressed like the founding fathers. That's how wrong it is.

This is what 5th century Romans looked like:

I think the problem is that pop culture has this theme park version of history that treats time periods like distinct worlds with no fluidity between them. In Roman Times, people dressed like this vs Medieval Times when people dressed like that. But that is obviously not how time works. The end of the Western Roman Empire led directly into and overlapped with the Middle Ages, and the aesthetics we associate with medieval Europe were already long established.

On a related note, the "barbarians" didn't dress like you think they did either. Less of this:

More of this:

(Art by Angus McBride)

Again, the end of the Western Roman Empire was the beginning of medieval Europe, and it already looked like it.

The notable exception was the Franks, who apparently really did dress like that:

There really is an exception to everything, and it's usually the French.

I feel like those "The entire skincare industry movement is a capitalist/social media grift/scam" posts really fail to take people's physical comfort with regard to their skin into account. Like everyone's skin varies depending on genetics, and not everyone is living in the same place where their skin got its traits. Like, if your skin developed over generations to protect you from an arid mediterranean environment but you're currently living in the pacific northwest, you might need a toner or something because your skin isn't cycling it's oils the way it would in a drier clime and you don't like how greasy it feels. Sometimes acne is painful and it's not unreasonable to not want painful zits. If your skin feels uncomfortably tight all the time, you probably need a moisturizer, and incorporating that into your daily routine for your comfort doesn't make you a slave of capitalism. Like it is messed up that there's this massive industry around skincare and that that industry is built around fucked up eurocentric beauty standards, but also like... skin is a very individualistic thing, depending on your genetics and potential allergies and where you live, and like... idk, obviously no one needs a million products or a 47 minute routine, but the needs of skin vary and it's kind of dumb to make these big blanket statements about how the only thing you need is sunscreen. (I mean you do definitely need sunscreen though. 100%.)

skin is an organ and you need to take care of it! the problem here isn't the existence of the product, it's the fucked up marketing that tells you that you need everything in their catalog in order to look beautiful or else you're a failure of a human being.

Low-wage workers are not who you think. #Fightfor15

And even if they were teens, so what??? But yes to all of this.

not even so what if they’re teens—my mom was working minimum wage at 13 (she lied about her age) to help put food on the table; millions of teenagers today are forced to do the same thing.

ao3 comments will be like “i like this line of your fic” and my reply will be like “fantastic thank you here’s my entire thought process about how i ended up with that particular line and also an outline for another fic i have and fifteen resources i used to research 1980s politics” and nobody asked for that chill

i asked for that

No we 100% asked for that.

Definitely asked for that, and also here’s the other three dozen lines from your fic that I liked and the outline for the fic they inspired me to write plus some extra character meta that at this point is only tangentially related to your fic but was definitely inspired by those 1980s politics resources and -

Yep.

This is literally how I made most of my fandom besties.

Listen…

Fic Commenters: If you ever want to make a comment going on depth about a part of a fic that stood out to you, but think “does the author really want to read all this?” The answer is YES! YES WE DO WANT TO READ ALL THAT!!!!

Fic authors: If you ever see a comment that makes you want to explain your thought process behind your writing, and you think “does the commenter really want to read all this?” The answer is YES! YES WE DO WANT TO READ ALL THAT!!!

The glass cliff, on the other hand, refers to the phenomenon by which women are more likely to be appointed to senior executive positions during times of organizational crisis, making them less likely to succeed. These newly appointed executives may confront internal board resistance, operate with less time flexibility, and ultimately receive shorter tenure than their male counterparts. And, when a woman CEO is terminated from her position, she is more likely than not to be replaced by a male (the “savior effect”).

He's stepping down so people don't pay attention to Tesla recalling 1 mil. cars.

They’re WHAT???

Also the woman named is an alt-right Trump supporter so....

sorry but in my opinion this is so rude

The notes on this post are just filled to the brim with the society-killing US chest-thumping of ‘HOW DARE YOU ASK SOMETHING OF ME IN MY OWN HOUSE???????‘ and just like... you guys do understand this is why you had Trump, right? Because all of you feel this way about each other?

Like, you are all aware that this is exactly exactly exactly how right wing people feel about being asked to use pronouns? “You want me to change MY behavior just to benefit YOU? FUCK YOU. I WOULD RATHER CALL YOU THE WRONG NAME FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE THAN BEND TO YOUR WILL.“ But hey. Lawnmower go brrrr, right? Based? The person asking for courtesy was the one being rude?

On reddit, I would expect this, but I’m surprised to see it on tumblr because like... this is the queer website? We care about each other here? Sometimes I feel like some of you are only right by coincidence and not by conviction or principle.

Maybe it’s because I’m from a third-world country, but in my eyes lawnmower man is such a gigantic cunt I cannot even believe my eyes reading this story. Part of being in a community, even a tiny, ad hoc one like a neighborhood is recognising that there are parts of our spaces that overlap, and we give and take from those spaces in equal measure. In my neighborhood, that means my neighbors are allowed to stay up until 3 AM partying if they want. You won’t hear a peep from me unless you’re doing it every night. I party too, and we both understand each other. It means my neighbor’s kids can play the drums and ride their very loud motorcycle outside. I have my own loud hobbies, and we all respect each other. And if you leave a note on my door asking me to be quiet while you have your WEDDING? Of course man, no problem! I hope it’s a sunny day and the ceremony is beautiful! I know that if I ever need anything, you will help me out as well. I mean come on, people. Are you seriously searing over one afternoon of your life? That is such a reasonable request. You were probably being quiet anyway! Stop trying to be the main character and build connections with the people around you. Being nice costs nothing and will only bring you gains. How else do you expect people to be respectful and kind to you, if not in return?

“Stop trying to be the main character and build connections with the people around you.”

Part of being in a community, even a tiny, ad hoc one like a neighborhood is recognising that there are parts of our spaces that overlap, and we give and take from those spaces in equal measure. I mean I'm from one of the richest first world countries and we have the same mentality that @counterturn promotes, you don't have to be a third world country to have that. I feel like this is such an american state of mind where it's all about me, me, me, me, but what about me and my things, and my space, and my time, and my money, and me me me me... We all live in communities, big or small, and in order to live toghether in harmony we need to respect each other. americans have never learnt how to communicate or handle conflict because when something, even the smallest little dilemma, occurs you just call the police and expect the adults to figure things out for you. grow up.

he would not fucking say that moments in fan interpretations is frustrating but at least you can ignore it. when the source itself makes him fucking say that that's when you're fucked.

i know so many of us have been trained since a young age to be so accommodating as to fear ever expressing an opinion, but as we get older we need to understand that being “accommodating” to the point of total indecisiveness is a very uncomfortable way to go through life, for you AND those around you. it’s ok to have an opinion on something. it’s ok to make a decision. your friends won’t hate you if you’re the one to end the “where do you want to eat” “oh anywhere is fine with me” discussion by suggesting a restaurant. you’re not high maintenance if you say, “noon is more convenient for me” when someone asks you what time you want to hang out. make decisions, have opinions, be part of the planning process, understand that you’re not being inconvenient, you’re just contributing.
