people are in the backround screaming ‘trans kids are our kids’ and ‘get off my back’. they are on a court floor.
the first person yelling into a microphone behind a podium says-
“we have created an environment of hate, and then we look at them, like theres something wrong with them.
first you hated black people, then you hated jews, now you’re hating everybody! so the question is, when the only thing left is you, will you hate yourself?
power concedes nothing. this house is for the people, by the people, to serve the people, and you. won’t. listen. you go after everybody’s kids but your own. you make hate the way to go as long as its not applied to you.”
the speaker points to the protesters, who are still chanting and being arrested, and continues, “you have to ask the question why would they doing that? who are we to cause that? none of us said we would come here and hurt people, and yet you make trade and policy so your bills can be heard, you go against the people of this state!
this is a horrible, horrible sentiment. this feels horrible because it has nothing to do with the people.
and the last thing i’ll say is God bless you, because somebody’s got to atone. yes, yes, the gentleman in the back, somebody’s got to atone for not being who you’re supposed to be.”
she sits back down, and the camera pans to people, sitting in the audience, still chanting as theyre being arrested. they’re chanting “trans rights are under attack, what’ll we do, stay off our backs!”
a second person speaks into the microphone from behind a podium, “i’d like to know the details on this override because this bill don’t make a lick of sense.
i’ve heard supporters of this bill say that transgender people have a mental illness. you’re wrong. if that’s what you believe, what is your plan to help? all i see are attempts to deny them the help that their parents and their doctors and most importantly themselves say they need, and that is inhumane and cruel.
i’ve also heard that no one in kentucky with a monikum of expertise on this issue spoke in favor of this bill because they were scared. thats why we have all these out of state hucksters testifying for this bill, while hundreds of Kentuckians who appose the bill were in the room, in the hallways, in our offices, in this gallery! ill tell you whose scared! trans kids, and their parents, and the people who love them! who are about to have life-saving medical care ripped out from under them by an insanely out of touch legislator.
i’ve heard we need to stop genital mutilation. guess what, its not happening! you can stop worrying about it!
lastly, i’ve heard that kentuckians overwhelmingly support this. thats weird, because the only legitimate poll we have says kentuckians overwhelmingly oppose the legislature coming into their homes, coming into their families, coming into their doctor’s offices, saying what they can and can’t do with their children. they’re their kids, not yours! your parental rights stop at your doorstep, or worse, my doorstep. they don’t come into this capital!
i’ve got 500 friends here today in opposition. this is dangerous policy passed by poor process supported by junk science! we should not override this veto.”
