going from the reddit star wars fandom to the tumblr star wars fandom is giving me insane whiplash. the upside is that people aren’t bitching about every single imperfect detail in the entire franchise, but the downside is that i’ve seen more fanart of obi wan and commander cody tenderly knowing each other than i have ever wanted to in my life in the last three hours and it has probably fundamentally altered the way i interact with the entire franchise

after the initial shock of being plunged into the icy cold lake of seeing my childhood action figures caressing each others sweaty chests in a gentle, hidden moment after a battle, i’ve been able to get my wits about me and realize that yeah, i’m kinda with it

I find it kind of funny that human babies are so fragile and helpless and useless that natural selection went like HARD-hard on humans finding babies cute. This thing is a wailing messy resource sinkhole so please find other reason to enjoy it. And the humans that did find baby cute and invest time in them, the crazy bastards?? Lived!!

And now there’s so much spill-over from “baby cute” gene that humans see literally any “baby” creature that even slightly resembles us, like

and we’re like 😍🥰🤩🥺🥺🥺 I wanna love you so bad. I wanna make so many images of you, you are so small, just baby. I’m inventing new emotions as we speak bc I love you so much.

Like, I’m almost convinced humans didn’t even domesticate dogs bc we thought they’d be useful, we saw some puppies and it activated our Big Boi Primate Baby buttons, it wasn’t even logic time baby, it was 🥺 time.

Now that I'm working in the anthropology department and we're teaching human evolution, I wonder how many anthropologists looking for ancient hominids must have found modern human remains instead. You didn't find a fossil of human evolution... but you did find the remains of a person. Isn't that meaningful, too? And also... they are so similar to us, that it's not unlikely that so many remains that could have been key to understanding human evolution have been misidentified as just humans (which raises the question "weren't they just human" but I digress)

There's an interesting story about Sahelanthropus (a hominid similar to chimpanzees who walked upright about 6 millions ago in modern Chad). When it was discovered, the remains presented wear and tear from wind and sun exposure, which was wierd because they were found buried. It was then the anthropologist noticed it was buried with its head facing towards Mecca, like in proper Muslim burial practice. Muslim nomads must have found the remains of Sahelanthropus, they would have thought it was a human, and decided to give it a proper burial, even if they didn't know its story or who was it life, they thought those bones deserved to rest.

This refusal to mask to protect lives reminds me of how that one old timey surgeon was like "hey I noticed that mortality rates go down when I wash my hands between handling corpses and delivering babies, maybe try it?" And he got treated viciously and shunned by the entire medical field because "a gentleman's hands are always clean" like by default so they shouldn't have to wash them.

And just this obvious but often unspoken idea that contagion can never be spread (and definitely not seriously suffered) by someone who thinks of themself as like inherently "pure" and how these ideas link up with white supremacist and ableist/eugenicist concepts of who is "dirty" and who is considered pure/clean by default even without cleaning themselves (and how Calvinist predestination never really left us and people think they're "good" because of their own special essence rather than what they DO) and like who generally gets blamed for widespread contagion and how those who are ill long term are suspect and are either fakers/exaggerating/"using it as an excuse" or deserve to suffer somehow or both and how all this cognitive baggage makes it possible to see thousands dead every week and decide that's not a big deal

Which is a lot of why anti masking started with christofascist white supremacists!!

This isn’t a coincidence. Revolutions almost always happen when the population of a country is at its youngest and that’s a lot more true nowadays with social media.

Claudette Colvin was actually the first one to refuse her seat in Montgomery, Alabama to a white passenger. The movement chose to promote Rosa Parks as the figure for that form of protest because Claudette was a pregnant 15-year-old girl.

Barbara Rose Johns was a 16-year-old who organized a student strike protesting segregated schools. This strike, after gaining support of the NAACP, became a lawsuit that turned into Brown vs. The Board of Education and resulted in the desegregation of U.S schools nationally.

7th-grader Mary Beth Tinker, disturbed by the Vietnam War, decided to wear an arm band with a peace sign on it in protest. Her school suspended her. Her family filed a suit, Tinker vs. Des Moines, which reached the Supreme Court and ruled in her favor, ensuring that students and teachers maintain their right to free speech while in school.

Freddie & Truus Oversteegen were sisters who joined a Dutch resistance movement in WWII in their teens. They lured, ambushed, and assassinated Nazis and Dutch collaborators. They also blew up a railway line, transported Jewish refugees to new hiding places, and worked in an emergency hospital.

Our history books may like to showcase male figures, but behind every movement is a young girl ready to make a change. It was true then, it’s true now, and future generations of teenage girls will go on to inspire progress, whether they’re credited or not.

We were raised on these stories of fighting back against oppression, but then the people who wrote them or read them to us act shocked we turned out ready to fight facism even while being anti-social.

There are many reasons why women’s history is so often elided or erased in our education. But one of those reasons is that so MANY of the women who made history, did so for reasons that challenged existing structures of power…and usually in accessible, related ways that modern day institutions feared students learning from.

I see a lot of people say Dean would be all "baby, honey, sweetie" with Cas if they were dating but I choose to believe he would absolutely marry that man and still call him "dude, buddy, guy"

Would you like to win this or other awesome prizes?!

Not going to lie, Gotham Knights’ cancellation hit me hard. It was so clear how much of themselves the writing team poured into the story, especially Natalie, and the last episode where Sharper went canon and Steph came out reflected my own experiences in a really visceral way that meant a LOT to see play out on cable TV.

I’m sure it’s partially because of how much the cast & production team have interacted with the fandom (I’ve never had a show creator reply to my tweets or care to talk to me personally before 🥺) so I felt pretty gutted by this show getting tabled.

With the strike still hot, I don’t think a rescue campaign will do much at the moment, so I thought I might try and spread positivity another way. I’ve had this raffle in the planning stages for a while, I wanted to celebrate my newest original book release by giving back, which is why I had these signed.

Between GK and Misha’s demining campaign for U24 & Legacy of War in Ukraine losing a bit of steam, it feels like as good a time to put it out there.

My personal goal is to raise $1k for Misha’s demining fundraiser! I would love to make that happen.

This raffle is easy: donate $5 or more to that effort, send me a receipt, and be entered to win. You can also donate to Random Acts and get a second entry.

Donations must be NEW! Receipts dated from now to the end of the raffle. The goal is to boost the fundraiser!

All the info/links are here:

On the topic of new trans men figuring themselves out and how it’s not like anyone gives out a manual on how to be a man, and also on the topic of supporting more queer POC

Can we talk about the unique experience of genuinely not knowing what haircuts to even consider when you’re black??? Because like… “short hair” happens with both black men and black women, bald/shaved happens with both, long happens with both, braids and locs happen with both, afros happen with both

It took me forever to figure out that I can do all of the variations I’d been doing, just that the unique styling is different on these gender lines.

As a Black trans man who wants a hair cut really bad, it’s hard for me to even visualize a buzz cut on a Black person. Like I see so many posts helping trans men out with how they would look if they got a hair cut, but pretty much all of them have white people as examples. Trans men of color are THAT invisible to the point to were I’ve convinced myself that I wouldn’t look good with short hair.

Sure, I can look up pics of Black men with a buzz cut but 99.9% of them are gonna be cis Black men, folks I look nothing like. And if I add in trans, I’m scared that instead of getting articles about hair cuts, I’m gonna articles about violence we’ve faced over these past few years.

I wanna see sites and articles discussing Black hair and styles for Black trans people. If there’s a site for it, I’d like to know dearly and I want that shit to be boosted to high hell because resources for Black hair, let alone for Black trans people aren’t really around. Especially when it comes to Black folks with 4c hair, like myself.

At the end of the day, no Black trans men or Black trans person in general should be convincing themselves that they’d look ugly with shorter or longer hair, just because they can’t seem themselves being represented anywhere. It shouldn’t get to that point. Ever.

You’re right, even trying to google black trans masc hairstyles mostly just gets you white people with white people hair. Yeah sorry that’s literally not possible with my hair texture.

I’ve sort of had to… make things up as I go along. Like you, I was told repeatedly that my hair texture does not look good when cut short. It took me a very long time to want to try a shorter style as a result. It took me even longer to say fuck it, big chop, and shave my head bald. There. Starting fresh.

What I’ve found has been working for me is to first figure out what hair texture you have. I find just googling “black male hairstyle” will get you mostly 4c hair which is great for those who have it and the facial structure to match! And less great for those who don’t! With me having 3b/3c hair, I was able to find a number of short styles on a wide variety of faces and thus was able to figure out what worked best for how I like to look. And it did take some experimentation and trust, but it ultimately made me really appreciate taking the time to actually do my hair rather than feeling like it was this massive chore.

Once you find your hair texture, you need to do two things:

Figure out what hairstyles you like best with your hair texture. Avoid gendered terms if you can. If you want a short style, look for short styles. If you want a long style, look for long styles. BLACK MEN CAN AND DO WEAR THEIR HAIR LONG frequently as an afro, braids, or locs. It’s up to you to then decide if that long look is something you’re interested in, and how to masculinize it if so. Personally, I prefer the ever popular shaved sides look, and eventually will be getting braids or locs with the length on the top depending if my 3b/3c hair will actually cooperate with locs. I did the fro look for a while and I’ve had cornrows but for the most part I put some product in it and wear my natural curls that way. Protective styling is a big big thing with black men even though it’s mostly only spoken about in the context of female styles. I had a really long conversation with a black coworker about protective styles and how he chooses to do his hair, which is actually longer than mine.

And, figure out the best care for your hair texture. For me, I have a rotating schedule of oil to rub into my scalp and shea butter pomade to style with when wearing my hair natural. All those selfies of mine, if my hair is free, it’s got one of the two in it. I got a lot better about protecting my hair at night, using a leave-in overnight and the day after wash day. Being consistent on the timing of wash day. I use black owned shampoo and conditioner in my hair made specifically for black men. I use a durag and a sport cap to protect my hair on days when its most prone to damage. My hair has never been healthier and I’ve never been happier with the way I can wear and style it.

It was a huge transition for me because I used to have waist-length hair and then shaved my head bald about a year and a half ago to start over and build a better routine than semi resentment from the ground up.

With your 4c hair I would say to take a glance at these:

As there are a number of different styles besides just shaving your head completely bald, and depending on your comfort level, you can try out a good deal of them before making a firm decision on what exactly you want your head to look like.

You can also do like me and just walk into a barber shop and tell them that you have to play a male character for a production and you have no idea what to do with your hair and see if they’ll help you, but I recommend only doing that if you’re willing to get a “we don’t cut girl hair” while you’re trying it. I did that the first time I cut my hair short and to his credit he did cut my hair fairly short and style it well, but it was still far too feminine for me, so I explored a lot of options after that.

Holy shit thank you! @ my followers, PLEASE boost this addition! Black trans folks out there might need this and it might just help them out with their hair or even with just simply feeling seen! A Black trans person taking time out of their day to share their experiences and resources could use some boosting and this carries a lot of personal information and advice in it! DON’T undermine this valuable information!!!

"There’s no reason a superhero television show from the 1970s with the special effects budget of a bag of gummy worms should make it on this list unless you’re talking about perhaps the most perfect superhero casting of all time."

What an honor. Thank you, @washingtonpost.

@vancityreynolds, watch your back.

i can't watch movies containing naval warfare for the same reason some horse lovers can't watch historic war movies where horses get shot

yes, i know the cannonballs aren't real. yes, i understand the ships are only pretending to sink. and yet, I am distress

Don't worry! The boats just turn into submarines when the sink! They don't actually take any damage, they just travel underwater to get a snack for being such good boats!

logically i know this, but it's still reassuring to hear someone say it out aloud

And! When they do a really really really good job they are given boat belly rubs! and an extra warm boat bath! I am glad I could be of help to reassure you my friend!

why do we praise boats like this boats are an invasive species and danger to the ocean and all of its natural wildlife like sharks and shipwreaks

okay wow that is a MASSIVE generalization, the boat genus has evolved over thousands of years and consists of hundreds of subspecies many of which are perfectly capable of living as part of a balanced aquatic ecosystem. boats aren't automatically evil just because *you personally* think they're big and scary.

@is-the-boat-video-cute your professional opinion?

Rating: Cute!

While there are invasive boat species (see: most species of yacht), most species of boat are fully acclimated to their environment!

this is my favourite genre of Tumblr post

what can i say tumblr loves shipping

Anonymous asked:

Can you tell me why Frodo is so important in lotr? Why can't someone else, anyone else, carry the ring to mordor?

but someone else could.

that’s the whole point of frodo—there is nothing special about him, he’s a hobbit, he’s short and likes stories, smokes pipeweed and makes mischief, he’s a young man like other young men, except for the singularly important fact that he is the one who volunteers. there is this terrible thing that must be done, the magnitude of which no one fully understands and can never understand before it is done, but frodo says me and frodo says I will.

(when boromir is thinking of how he can use the ring to defend gondor, when aragorn is thinking of how it brought down proud isildur, when elrond is holding council and gandalf is thinking of how twisted he would become, if he ever dared—)

but then there’s frodo, who desires nothing except what he has already left behind him, and says, I will take the Ring.

it is an offer made out of absolute innocence, utter sincerity. It is made without knowing what it will make of him—and frodo loses everything to the ring, he loses peace and himself and the shire, he loses the ability to be in the world. It’s cruel, the ring is cruel, it searches out every weakness you have and feeds on it, drinks you dry and fills you with its poison instead, the ring is so cruel.

and frodo picks it up willingly. for no other reason except that it has to be done.

(the ring warps boromir into a hopeless grasping dead thing, the power of the palantir turns denethor into an old man, jealous and suspicious, it bends even saruman, once the proudest of the istari, into a mechanised warlord, sitting in his fortress and bent over his perverse creations—all the best of intentions, laid waste)

but there’s a reason gollum exists in the narrative, which is to show—well, to show what frodo might have been. because even as frodo grows mistrustful and wearied, as the burden of this ring grows heavier and heavier, he is never gollum. he is gentle to gollum. he is afraid—god frodo is so afraid for 2/3 of these books he is so tired and afraid, but he keeps moving, he walks though it would pull him into the ground, because he asked for this, he said he would.

someone else could have carried the ring to mordor, I suppose. the idea of a martyr is not dependent on the particular flesh and blood person dying for some greater purpose. but such a thing has to be chosen, lifted onto your shoulders for the right reason, the truest reasons, and followed into the dark, though it would see you burnt through and bled out.

I will take the Ring, though I do not know the way.

y'know say what you want about tumblr (and I have), but this is still probably the simplest and most powerful distillation of the heart of the Lord of the Rings I’ve ever read. I think back to it all the time

“It was Day 15 of COVID. I’d been eating Wendy’s for 14 days straight. Bacon whatever-the-hell-it-is. A lot of good hot cheesy nastiness. I was starting to feel it, bad. It was like: ‘I gotta move.’ Plus I wanted to let people know: ‘This is New York. We’re not going anywhere.’ Hand truck came from Home Depot. Got the dual 15-inch speakers at a really good electronics store in the Bronx. It’s called ‘Going Out of Business.’ That’s not the name, but they’ve had that sign in the window for twelve years. Corner of 3rd Ave and 149th. Tell them Love Train sent you. I can go about eight miles before I run out of charge. You gotta be respectful above 59th Street. A lot of elderly people up there. They’ve got sensitive hearing, so you’ve got to be mindful. Normally I’ll play Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Elton John– all the old good stuff. But after 59th there’s no limits. That’s when the city kicks in. Anything goes: disco, hip hop, house. I’m competing with the sirens and trucks, so the louder the better. This set-up is 4th generation. The 3rd generation had lights and a television attached, but she’s currently in the custody of Miami PD. I’m gonna get her back, though. They gave me a good judge. She knew that Love Train is not a criminal. And spreading love is not a crime.”

i know we’ve talked abt this before but the fact that free to be you and me and the end are one after another is sooooo mindboggling. free to be you and me is like hey dean here’s some time away from a codependent relationship with your brother that can actually be healthy for you. and here’s some good time with a great new friend. and then BOOM if you let your little brother even a little space he’s gonna go off and say yes to the devil and your new friend is gonna be forever corrupted by your mere existence. chew on that.

GO fans are so uncool for prioritizing some guy’s wishes over wanting to have a fun time on tumblr together. The really sublime thing about spn fans and the reason I admire them is that they have 0 respect for anyone involved and 100% commitment to doing good posts online

I think the difference is that spn fans and spn creators have a mutual disrespect. In spn fandom you have to actively destroy the source material to get any fun out of it. You have to meta analyse all the good bits and dismiss all the shitty bits (aka anything by buckleming). We had to accept that most of the bigwigs (aka the CW execs, Bob Singer, his horrible wife, many of the creative team, Jarpiss) loathed anything to do with Destiel and actively ridiculed the fanbase for wanting representation. Even the actors and writers and directors involved in making the destiel confession happen had to tiptoe around all the people in the decision making spots just to give us what we got.

Post November 2020, the general attitude has been meme, ridicule, make our own fun, commit to the bit, hate on the ending and anything that those assholes may be proud of because anyone with eyes can see it was a huge embarrassment of a failure and they DESERVE to be ridiculed for it. Make it so that destiel is the ONLY thing anyone thinks of when people think of SPN. That's how we win and its damn satisfying to see.

But Neil Gaiman and everyone involved in making Good Omens seem to genuinely care and love the fanbase. So the fanbase loves them. Sometimes it gets overly parasocial with Neil, but eh, he chooses to be on Tumblr so on his own head be it. As someone in both fandoms, I find the overprotectiveness of Neil a bit odd, and I despise fandom policing, but I get the difference. I think that GO fans that want to talk about the spoiler should be allowed to without fear of attack, and they should be able to meme and joke about it too. So long as they tag it good omens spoilers i dont see the big deal at all. Its when people dont tag it and it spreads everywhere that it becomes a problem.

So its a balance. Good Omens is so far removed from SPN in so many ways, but mostly because the creative team actually care, so the fans care. By s15 of SPN its clear no one gave a shit outside of the actors and a few writers. So why should the fans give a shit either? We make our own fun, and thats why spn fandom is the funniest place on tumblr.
