The Gender Census 2020 is now open!

The seventh annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 12th March 2020.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a blog post summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.

If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, retweet this tweet, boost this Mastodon post, check out this post on Reddit, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks like Facebook. Every share is extremely helpful - it’s what helped us get 11,000 responses last year.

The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesn’t fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.

Is this safe? Or will this somehow result in the doxxing of people who could be unsafe in their physical communities?

The survey software collects IP addresses, which I do have access to and which can reveal someone’s location, but I remove them before publishing the spreadsheet of response data. I cannot speak to information the survey software collects without my knowledge.

It doesn’t collect names or email addresses as far as I can see. The information I ask for in the survey that could be used to identify someone AFK is:

Like, the “goal” of being trans isn’t to pass, it’s to be happy. And if your happiness is squared away in passing then whatever I ain’t gonna yell at ya for it, but thats a you kinda thing and saying it’s the overarching “goal” of everyone’s is ridiculous.

I saw this on Facebook and went to check my registration status, sure it was fine because I voted recently, but I put in the info and it said I’m not registered

PLEASE, especially if you’re a Black voter, check your registration status at vote.org

Know your status

Does your last name sound anything like Lopez, Martinez, or Rodriguez? Mine does. When I saw this post I checked my voter registration status online with my state. Despite registering just three months ago, I was no longer registered to vote, and I did not receive my ballot. If you live in a mail-in voting state and you didn’t get your ballot, contact your county election official/county clerk for a replacement.

Make sure you check with your state’s voting site as well. I just had the shit scared out of me because that website said I was registered, but when I checked my state’s site (and made sure I had the right county selected) it said I was registered.

It’s worth checking your state’s site every few months anyway (especially when any election is coming up).

I’m laughing cause this is hilarious, they turned of messaging after I called them out. But for those of you not in the know let me explain how gift card scams work.

If someone is offering to give you money, great!! There are a few ways to stay safe. Apps like PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay Cash, and internal banking transfers are all safe ways to do this although PayPal is generally a good way since you don’t need to give any personal info other than an email.

A scammer will ask you to purchase a gift card for them, and this is your first clue there is something phishy going on. If some one is genuinely trying to give you money they will not ask you to purchase something in order for that money to get to you.

If you purchase the gift card, they’ll ask you for the number on the card so they can refill it for you and give you the promised money. In a scam they will take all the money out of the card you purchased and then disappear.

I deal with this a lot at work. People calling folks and telling them their online accounts are locked and they need to purchase a gift card so they can pay to unlock them. It’s all bullshit. Please do not get wrapped up in the promise of money or in the fear or your accounts or devices not working. Think rationally, and if someone asks you to buy something so they can give you what they promised (money, unlocking your account, return of digital property) don’t do it.
