“The idea that Texas will be eternally red I think is a false one. But when it will turn is hard to say. Once it does turn, though, if you take the largest red state and add it to the blue column, the politics of America totally transform.”
— Lawrence Wright, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of God Save Texas
As international women’s day is approaching, please let us all remember that ADHD in women is still underdiagnosed. With many not getting diagnosed until adulthood or at all. (By the way, the general percentage of adults living with undiagnosed ADHD -men and women- was as high as 90% in 2012 according to Barkley.) “These are people significantly underachieving and who end up going the depression route, mostly the result of life failure. It’s like they’re running life’s race with lead weights on their ankles”. Leading to low self-esteem and a deep-seated sense of personal failure.
- “Women with ADHD were also more likely to report a history of depression and anxiety. They had also been in psychological treatment more often and had received more prescriptions for psychotropic medications than had women without ADHD.“ So while other mental health problems (that are often caused or accelerated by the untreated ADHD!) may or may not be spotted, the ADHD often goes unnoticed. As a result, treatments do not work as effectively as they could have had the disorder been recognized. And although there recently has been a notable increase in women taking stimulant medication for their ADHD, do not make the mistake of thinking that this solves the problem. Yes, awareness is getting better but there’s still more that needs to get done.
Lea Berman and Jeremy Bernard have organized state dinners and congressional picnics, each serving as White House social secretary for different administrations. Bernard worked for President Obama; Berman for President George W. Bush. And they’ve collaborated on a new book that uses their White House experiences to draw out lessons in how to handle crises, defuse awkward moments and manage expectations.
They talked to Ari Shapiro about their experiences – check out the conversation here.

“At some point, you gotta decide for yourself who you’re going to be. Can’t let nobody make that decision for you.”

“My favorite story out of this is Malia, when she was 4, she had a little dance thing. Well, Michelle was gone that weekend so I’m taking her to ballet. And I get her in her little leotard and her little stuff. I did her hair, put it in a little bun.
We get to the dance studio and one of the mothers there right away comes up to Malia – she thinks she’s out of earshot of me and she says, ‘Sweetie, do you want me to redo your hair?’ And Malia who she’s 4 says, ‘Yes please, this is a disaster’. You know, she didn’t want to hurt daddy’s feelings.”
