They are private armies that answer only to the Satate governor. In the past they were used mainly for disaster relief and similar missions.
Today we are seeing red state governors creating new state guards, arming them, giving them police powers, and giving them military training and equipment. The purpose is to protect state capitals and RepubliKKKan politicians from future protest movements against conservative policies by BLM, Antifa, or other Democratic leaning citizens.
