Friendship Games Review
So I decided to re watch Equestria Girls Friendship Games and I had some thoughts on it. Initially, it was my least favorite out of the Equestria Girls movies...and sadly it still is. Easily, where it falls flat is the characters, and I think the issue is a mix between having too many characters and characters not having a lot of development in general. The stars of this movie are Sunset Shimmer and Sci-Twi (more on her later) but everyone else gets pushed to the side. So, let me explain:
1. Too Many Characters= Not Enough Development
This is the biggest issue of Friendship Games, this movie has TOO MANY NEW CHARACTERS! I can do a tally of how many new characters were in each movie (major roles only and no human counterparts of ponies with the exception of Sci-Twi) and this movie still has the most and for my enjoyment, I’m going to do it:
- Equestria Girls: Sunset Shimmer, Flash Sentry, Principal Celestia, Vice Principal Luna
- Rainbow Rocks: Adagio Dazzle, Sonata Dusk, Aria Blaze, Sci-Twi (appears at the end of the movie)
- Friendship Games: Abacus Cinch, Dean Cadence, Sour Sweet, Sugarcoat, Lemon Zest, Sunny Flare, and Indigo Zap
- Legend of Everfree: Gloriosa Daisy, Timber Spruce
- Magical Movie Night: Juniper Montage
- Forgotten Friendship: Wallflower Blush
- Rollercoaster of Friendship: Vignette Valencia
- Spring Breakdown: Raga’muffin (technically the only new character despite being just a love interest for Rarity)
- Sunset’s Backstage Pass: Kiwi Lolipop (K-Lo), Supernova Zap (Su-Z)
So yeah, Friendship Games has the most amount of new characters and somehow with the Shadowbolt 5 getting promotional art, and two dolls each...they have no character aside from being rivals of the Mane 5...but even that doesn’t go anywhere. They don’t have a rivalry at all, they set up the opening titles to see who’s paired up with who:
- Fluttershy vs. Sour Sweet
- Applejack vs. Sugarcoat
- Pinkie vs. Lemon Zest
- Rarity vs. Sunny Flare
- Pinkie Pie vs. Lemon Zest
- Rainbow Dash vs. Indigo Zap
- Sunset vs. Twilight
And none of them are even rivals to each other. They hardly interact with one another. Sure, they’re rivals in terms of the sporting events, but in terms of character interaction, the Shadowbolts bully Canterlot High, pick on Twilight (for no reason), and are kinda just jerks until the end of the movie when one of their own turns into a monster and they decide to help out...but then in the books and Dance Magic, they go back to their old ways and then repeat the same lesson. But the issue is that, Friendship Games tries to put in so many new characters that those new characters, don’t get development. I didn’t care about the Shadowbolts. In Equestria Girls, Sunset and Flash had characters to them, in Rainbow Rocks the Dazzlings had characters to them, Legend of Everfree, Gloriosa and Timber both had characters to them for me to care, Cinch had character to her, in which I cared, the Shadowbolts I didn’t care about. Honestly, they could’ve either replaced the Shadowbolts with background characters, or have the human counterparts of more ponies be their rivals which would make more sense:
- Rarity vs. Suri or Fleur
- Pinkie vs. Cheese Sandwhich (of all people from Crystal Prep)
- Applejack vs. Upper Crust
- Rainbow vs. Lightning Dust (originally they were going to use Lightning Dust but Indigo Zap replaced her...for some reason)
- Fluttershy vs. Treehugger (I don’t know...just spitballing)
Yeah, I think this image speaks for itself with Sunset taking center stage and the Mane 5 literally being behind her. For me, this is the start of the Mane 5 getting shafted from the movies and making Sunset and Twilight the stars. The Mane 5 don’t really do anything, except play the games and get their magic stolen while Sunset is more of the main focus while on the rival team, Twilight is the main focus. The sad thing is, this could easily be fixed, and since they like to parallel stuff from the previous movies (more on that later), I think what could’ve worked was have each of the Mane 5 connect with Twilight in a way that Princess Twilight did for them in the first movie, and in turn Friendship is Magic, it would’ve worked as a nice parallel to Twilight meeting the Mane 5 in Equestria. Because Twilight hardly interacts with the Mane 5 besides Pinkie and Fluttershy, and with Applejack helping her. But I think it would’ve been better and honestly strengthen Twilight’s relationship with the others if each of them displayed their elements while helping Twilight in some sort of way:
- Pinkie notices Twilight looking glum at the Crystal Prep-Canterlot High mixer, and in trying to cheer her up, she also gets the two schools to open up and come together, but mainly she doesn’t want to see a familiar face sad
- The whole scene with Fluttershy being kind to Twilight can pretty much stay the same
- Applejack being honest to Twilight and helping her at archery can stay the same
- Interestingly, enough in the original drafts of the film, there was a scene where instead of Rarity transforming being of making outfits for her friends, she generously offers Twilight to watch Spike due to Crystal Prep’s no dog policy and even give her a spa treatment (this scene would’ve taken place after the Fluttershy scene)
- With Rainbow Dash, there could easily be a scene where before the second events, she sees some of the Crystal Prep students glaring or talking behind Twilight’s back, and despite being on the other team she goes and defends Twilight showing her loyalty even someone she’s known for less than 24 hours (granted that was the same with Princess Twilight but I’ll take it)
The Mane 5 could be involved, but it would be a nice inverse of the Mane 5 helping out Twilight, like Princess Twilight did for them, kinda paralleling the first movie and they could parallel some events in the series:
- Pinkie cheering up Twilight could be a call back to Twilight’s first Ponyville party in FIM or Pinkie laughing and cheering up her friends while looking for the Elements
- Fluttershy’s Kindness could...be a parallel to Fluttershy stopping the manticore and Twilight learning about kindness in the first episode
- Rarity’s Generosity could easily parallel Rarity having Twilight try on different outfits (for comedy), but in all seriousness it could parallel Rarity being generous enough to give up her tail to Steven Magnet to fix his mustache
- Applejack’s Honesty could parallel the first episode when Twilight trusted Applejack at the cliff in the first episode
- Rainbow’s could easily be showing her loyalty to Twilight and the others against The Shadowbolts...which would be a cool coincidence, Rainbow defending Fluttershy and Gilda from the bullies, or it can be a call back from the first movie where Twilight asks Rainbow why she’d help her despite being on the other team parallel Princess Twilight asking Rainbow why’d she still help her after she lost the soccer match.
This could’ve given the Mane 5 more to do and have better interactions with the Twilight of their world, from the stuff they learned from Twilight in Equestria. But unfortunately, they get sidelined for Sunset Shimmer and her magic issue.
2. Sci-Twi
Now, I like Sci-Twi as a character, but I didn’t like the fact that she was a Fluttershy-esqe, character. Throughout the movie, you just feel bad for her. All of Crystal Prep doesn’t like her (that’s never stated as to why), Cinch is blackmailing her, Sunset is getting on her case (rightfully so but still), her only friend is Spike. She’s essentially a doormat in this movie, and for me I think it would’ve been better if she like Twilight at the start of FIM before she learned about friendship, this Twilight didn’t know about friendship either, but she was put into different circumstances, but it would’ve been better if she was like Twilight from the first episode.
- She wouldn’t know a thing about friendship aside from Spike, and Dean Cadence because of Crystal Prep
- Unlike the other Crystal Prep students who are mean, Twilight’s not mean but more asocial and indifferent to friendship as she sees no interest or reason for it (partly because of Cinch’s teachings at Crystal Prep and partly because she was always a loner studying)
- Throughout meeting the Mane 5, she slowly starts to learn what the good virtues of friendship is
- She’ll still accidentally take their magic and kinda be more realistic on the magic front
- She keeps on hearing about this friend of their’s (Princess Twilight) and things come to ahead at the motocross relay where Twilight puts two and two together stating that the only reason why they wanted to be friends or helped her, was because she looked their old friend and nothing more. (Honestly, that was pretty much the reason why the Mane 5 and Sunset were interacting with Twilight in the first place, let’s be honest...)
- She believes that Cinch was right with the girls being only interacting with her because she looks like someone they knew and wanted to exploit her and more determined to succeed to get her independent study program at Everton
- Cinch and the Shadowbolts still pressure Twilight into releasing all the magic and she turns into Midnight Sparkle and Spike and the Mane 5 help her turn back to normal
So I think it would’ve worked better if Twilight had more of a personality that was like her Equestrian counterpart, before she discovered friendship...and I know Moondancer already did that, but the difference was that Twilight was asocial and indifferent to the notion of friendship while Moondancer pretty much became a carbon copy of first episode Twilight...but speaking of Twilight-esque characters, time to move onto Sunset Shimmer.
3. Sunset Shimmer
Uh...I’m in a mixed bag here. On one hand, I liked her arc about trying to figure out how the magic operates in the human world, and she felt responsible since she brought it there in the first place...on the other hand I can understand the crew trying to have Sunset come full circle by paralleling the ending of the first movie (more on this in a bit), with her helping Twilight like Princess Twilight did for her...but for me it wasn’t executed very well and could’ve been better. Once again, I do like how Sunset’s arc in this movie was to find out what was going on with the magic and why the Humane 5 pony up without their instruments, also learning that she can’t always rely on Princess Twilight for help...despite it being hella cute that she was even willing to go back to Equestria to see Princess Twilight and was worried. On my initial viewing of the movie years ago, I was mad at Sunset for yelling at Sci Twi (...I love Twilight and I was biased), and thought that she had the nerve to yell at Sci-Twi for the stuff that she caused...and then it hit me that was reason why she yelled. Going back on the scene, I realized that she wasn’t necessarily mad at Twilight she was mad at herself.
Sunset Shimmer: What do you mean you don't know how?! (Sunset brought the Element of Magic with no knowledge of what it could do or how it’s magic worked, but did it due to greed, selfishness, and power)
Sunset Shimmer: Is there anything you do know?! Like how to get our magic back?! Or how to fix the portal to Equestria?! (Mane 6 wouldn’t have magic if it weren’t for Sunset bringing the crown...and by extension the portal because Princess Twilight wouldn’t modify it because she wouldn’t even know about the human world if Sunset hadn’t stolen the crown)
Sunset Shimmer: You're supposed to be so smart, but did you ever think that you shouldn't be messing around with things you don't understand?! (Sunset was one of Celestia’s top students, and is one of Canterlot High’s top students, but she can’t find a solution to the problem that she ultimately caused in the first place)
Sunset Shimmer: But you don't! And worst of all, you put the lives of my friends in danger! (She attempts to figure out solutions but can’t find one and doesn’t understand the magic and because of her bringing the crown, the Dazzlings were lured to Canterlot High, and Sci-Twi is accidentally draining magic from her friends weakening them...and Crystal Prep thinks that Canterlot High is cheating)
So, this is the part where she’s confronting Twilight and while yes, she let her anger boil over to the point of yelling at Twilight, she knows that none of them would be in this mess if it weren’t for magic being at Canterlot High and her words directly:
Sunset Shimmer: Crystal Prep is never gonna believe we won fair and square if there's magic around. And that magic is only around... because of me.
One other thing that I liked, that wasn’t explicitly stated in the movie, but shown (throughout the first three movies in fact) is that Sunset has times where she feels inferior to Twilight:
- Sci-Twi: Sunset was slightly disappointed that she got the answer wrong, and Sci Twi got it right, and throughout the movie Twilight is unintentionally making something happen with the magic, while Sunset hasn’t figured out a thing. In the earlier drafts of the movie, one of the Mane 5 even calls out the fact that Twilight is making better progress with the magic than Sunset
- Princess Twilight: Throughout the entire movie, she attempts to ask Princess Twilight through her journal about the magic issue, starting from advice on what to do, to getting frustrated that she hasn’t answered, even to the point where she was for the first time since the first movie flat out willing to go back to Equestria just to get advice from her. She feels inferior against Princess Twilight but just not with the animosity she had in the first movie. (Saving this one for another post)
- Midnight Sparkle: Even Midnight Sparkle nearly gets the upper hand on Sunset Shimmer. Both are empowered by the Mane 5′s magic, and they have a beam struggle where Midnight overpowers Sunset to the point where she’s straining, the students look in worry, and it takes Spike distracting Midnight by snapping her out of it for a second, for Sunset to win...and then according to Legend of Everfree turns out Midnight was just suppressed.
Speaking of the Midnight vs. Daydream fight AKA the climax of Friendship Games, I’ll say this...at least Midnight’s defeat didn’t parallel Sunset’s defeat in the first movie which was a scene by scene copy of Nightmare Moon’s defeat from the first episode, but it was still paralleling the climax of the first movie...but it wasn’t done well in my opinion.
4. The Climax
Going to be honest, this was initially the only thing I took from the movie, and still do. We get an evil version of Twilight Sparkle, and since I’ve covered my love for Midnight Sparkle many times in many posts, I’m just gonna state that I love Midnight Sparkle, I’m glad she came back in Legend of Everfree...according to the drafts for Season 9 of Friendship is Magic, Princess Twilight was either going to turn evil, or through desperation turn into Midnight Sparkle, like Luna did as Nightmare Moon...so close, but yet so far. But even the greatness that is Midnight Sparkle...couldn’t save this climax or this movie. Once again, I understand they were trying to have these parallels, with this being a parallel to the climax of the first movie...although a bit better. The climax tries to have Sunset relate to Twilight with her being overwhelmed by the magic of the crown and understanding Twilight...but it falls flat for a few reasons, one of which I mentioned earlier.
- The first being that...with Sunset and Twilight they had two entirely different motivations and reactions with the magic
- For Sunset, while yes she was overwhelmed by the magic of the crown and it turned her into a demon, while not directly stated, she flat out implies that she was gonna attempt to rule Equestria with the power of the crown from the get go.
- “When the crown and its power are mine, Twilight Sparkle will be sorry she ever set hoof into this world. Not that she would've been much safer if she'd stayed in Equestria.”- Sunset Shimmer as a human teenage girl.
- This line was said after Twilight and Sunset’s confrontation in the first movie, and WAY before she got the crown and turned into a demon. She was overwhelmed turning the transformation, but after her motivations were still there, they weren’t changed, she still wanted Equestria and had a (poorly) thought out plan to try and conquer Equestria throughout the entire movie. So Sunset having a similar overwhelming experience only chalks down to her turning into a tall demon.
- For Twilight, she just wanted to go to an independent study program and wanted to identify the strange energy from Canterlot High, so that she could get into the program. Personality wise, she was a shy meek timid girl, who practically kept to herself, and cared for her dog Spike. She wanted to understand Equestrian magic for her study program.
- When she turned into a dark angel (Sunset was the only one who literally turns into a she-demon, so I’m gonna call Midnight what she looked like), Twilight flat out got corrupted by that magic, her personality got twisted, she went from shy and meek to deranged and maniacal, so much so that she didn’t care about the destruction of the worlds, just as long as she got to Equestria to “understand” the magic threatening both worlds
- The second point I want to touch on is again, character interaction. Sunset claims that she “understands” Twilight but in reality she BARELY knows the girl. The only real interaction the two have in the movie before the climax is when Sunset yells at her. The two other appearances, were when Sunset was asking Twilight questions, but they were interrupted. Sunset didn’t have enough character interaction with Twilight to make the climax connect for me. You know the two character that actually did, have that connection with Twilight...Fluttershy and Spike
- Fluttershy not only had a whole scene with interacting with Twilight, but she defended Twilight after she unintentionally took her magic and was pretty much the only one out of the Mane 6 that interacted with her without it having to do with the games (Applejack and Pinkie’s interactions were related to the Friendship Games). If Fluttershy would’ve tried to get through to Twilight, it would be believable to me because she actually got to know Twilight.
- With Spike, I don’t know where to start. He’s pretty much shaped to be her only friend, her source of comfort, she has him as her wallpaper, was worried when he was affected by the magic and could talk, and in turn he was worried about her going to Canterlot High, saved her from plant monsters, and was there for her the entire movie, so much so that he was the key to snapping Twilight out of it, for a second which gave Daydream Shimmer the second she needed to overpower Midnight Sparkle, since she was about to lose.
So the climax wasn’t as satisfying because of the lack of character interactions between the two, to make me feel something and both girls situations were different, yes both got changed into something else by powerful magic as well as powers, but Twilight’s goals were warped by the magic, while Sunset had her motivations and plans worked out from the beginning.
5. Principal Cinch
Principal Cinch is one of the more unique villains in the EQG series. For starters, she’s the only adult villain in the Equestria Girls series still to this day. Second, the she’s the only antagonist to not use magic at all, she pressured Twilight to release the magic but she never used magic herself. But to be clear, she was the main antagonist for the movie. The Shadowbolts were nothing but bullies and the rival team for the Friendship Games, their molded after her principles and curriculum and reputation, so the Shadowbolts are molded after Cinch’s teachings. With Sci-Twi, while she unintentionally steals the Mane 6′s magic, she gets close to them because she’s competing in the Friendship Games, but not by choice, but because Cinch blackmails and manipulates Twilight with her desire of the Everton study program. This principal manipulates one of her best students with an application towards her future, in order to preserve her reputation at Crystal Prep. Sci Twi, is a victim (I’m getting to this one cause HOLY SHIT...). Midnight Sparkle? Even she was indirectly created by Cinch because she pressured Twilight into releasing the magic she collected...so that’s Cinch. She’s not like the other Equestria Girls villains and even the Friendship is Magic villains...and MY GOD she was great! For a fresh take on an antagonist, Cinch was a great villain and the worst part, she doesn’t need magic to do it. She’s the example of a realistic real-world antagonist. Of course, Cinch would be the strict principal of the rival school and how she ultimately cared about herself, but how she did it...I would be terrified of this woman if she was my principal.
Cinch not only served as a foil to Principal Celestia, she also serves as a foil to Princess Celestia, in terms of education. They serve as a contrast to each other. And ESPECIALLY with their treatments of Twilight.
- Both Celestia’s guide their students to be who they are and don’t strive for perfection while caring about the well being of their students. Cinch on the other hand is strict, strives for perfection, and any mistake or loss makes her mad. She’s willing to do whatever it takes to win and keep Crystal Prep’s reputation a float.
- Twilight: With both Celestia’s, she’s kind and caring. They have mentoring relationship with Twilight. Cinch on the other hand manipulates Sci-Twi, for the entire movie and keeps threatening her by tempting her with her desire for her independent study program.
So, yeah with that Friendship Games, is my least favorite Equestria Girls movie, because of mainly character interaction and I think they attempted to have too many characters. This was pretty long.
